How rates are calculated
Dunedin City Council’s Annual Plan or Long Term Plan lays out work for the year ahead, how much this will cost, and the total amount of rates needed to pay for it. Rates are based on your property's capital value, land use and whether it receives targeted rates, a rates remission or is non-rateable. The types of rates charged to an individual property will depend on its use and its geographical location relative to council infrastructure networks and rubbish collection area.
The general rate will be set on a differential basis based on land use (the categories are “residential”, “lifestyle”, “commercial”, “farmland”, “residential heritage bed and breakfasts” and “Forsyth Barr Stadium”).
