You must have a street performing permit to busk in Dunedin.
Street performing means the provision of entertainment on or in a public place, and includes but is not limited to, playing an instrument, singing, dancing, juggling, mime, puppetry, performance art, conjuring, acrobatics, recitation, undertaking artworks and performing other acts of theatrical or visual forms. It does not include advertising or promotion in any form.
There is no charge for a street performing permit, but there are some conditions. These conditions are to make sure everyone enjoys our public spaces and are listed in the Conditions for street performing.
If you are under 14, you must have your parent or caregiver’s consent. We may require proof of age.
Permits are posted within two working days and are valid for one year from the date of issue.
Remember to have your permit displayed prominently when you are performing.
Street performers in Dunedin’s CBD must leave three metres of unobstructed space for pedestrians to move past them. This means street performing is not permitted in narrow spaces, or in the entranceways to lanes. However, there are plenty of great options available around the CBD, including our newly upgraded George Street.
