Unwanted vehicles and vehicles that might be abandoned

Report a vehicle that might be abandoned

The Local Government Act 1974 outlines the criteria for when a vehicle is considered abandoned. Once it is established that the vehicle is abandoned, we are permitted under section 356 (link to external website, new window) & 356A (link to external website, new window) of the Local Government Act to remove the vehicle from the road.

To report a vehicle you think might be abandoned, contact us on +64 3 477 4000 or use our online form. The more information you can give us when reporting the vehicle, the better.

This information may include:

  • Address/location of the vehicle.
  • How long the vehicle has been at this location.
  • Make, model and colour of the vehicle.
  • Photos of the vehicle.

Unwanted vehicle removal scheme

You will need to submit a Vehicle Disposal Owner Declaration form, which is available at Customer Services in the Civic Centre (please note, this service is not available at any other service centre).

Bring your driver’s licence as we need to include a photocopy of this with your declaration.

We will do checks to ensure that you are the owner and can sign over ownership. When we have confirmation, we will contact you to organise collection of the vehicle.

Your vehicle can be:

  • on your property, as long as a tow truck can get to it easily and safely.
  • in any condition as long as it has no rubbish in it.
