Organising festivals and events in Dunedin

Festivals and events play an important role in creating great cities. They provide economic benefits, social connection and a chance to share and highlight culture, identity and the things that matter to us. Through festivals and events, we show the best of ourselves and make Dunedin feel like home.

The Dunedin City Council's Festivals and Events Plan 2018 - 2023 (PDF File, 1.1 MB | New window) is designed to help achieve our vision and objectives for social wellbeing, economic development, arts and culture, and parks and recreation. Great festivals and events connect people and communities and celebrate our diversity. They provide business opportunities and attract people to the city. They also create opportunities for local and visiting artists and use our excellent network of facilities and open spaces.

This toolkit has been developed to help event organisers create and run successful festivals and events in Dunedin. The toolkit can be used by all event organisers, no matter how large or small your event.

If you are considering holding a new event within the city, please email events@dcc.govt.nz. Our Events team provides advice on holding events in the Dunedin City Council's (DCC) public spaces, including parks and reserves. The team works with other departments to help you with the event approvals and any specialist consents required to ensure a safe and successful event.
