The stadium’s operator, city council-owned Venues Ōtautahi, has told <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> News there will be no region or location-based ticket levy, despite earlier suggestions from some city councillors and Mayor Phil Mauger. Instead, any ticket levy will apply to all ticketholders, including those in Christchurch, who contributed ratepayer funds to the stadium’s construction. “We can confirm there will not be a regionally targeted ticket levy for ticket purchasers outside the Christchurch City Council region. Regionally targeted levies are difficult to enforce and not supported by our ticketing systems,” said Venues Ōtautahi chief executive Caroline Harvie-Teare. Mauger and city councillor Sam MacDonald first proposed the idea of a location-based ticket levy in August 2023, suggesting it could help offset operating costs by charging more to people living outside Christchurch. However, both Mauger and the city council have since dropped efforts to seek funding contributions from other district councils. Venues Ōtautahi confirmed to <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> News in April it had ruled out ratepayers from neighbouring district councils contributing funds to the stadium’s operating costs. While a ticket levy is still under consideration, Harvie-Teare said it would apply to all ticket holders, regardless of where they live, and would depend on the type of event and ticket pricing. “Ticket levies are standard practice across industry and apply to most major venues across the country to cover costs such as repairs and maintenance. These levies can vary from venue to venue, event to event.” Ticket levies are already used in some form at Auckland’s Eden Park and Spark Arena. The $683 million stadium in Christchurch will open next April with a 30,000 capacity for sports matches and 36,000 for concerts. Venues Ōtautahi is staying mostly quiet about its plan to pay for events funding at the stadium and what will be covered by its own revenue, as opposed to city council money. Venues Ōtautahi refused to release the stadium’s business plan to <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> News, with Harvie-Teare saying it is “commercially sensitive.” <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> News, under the Local Government Official Information and Meetings Act, has requested Venues Ōtautahi’s business plan for the stadium. NEWS starnews.co.nz New date in July confirmed for testing of tsunami sirens BY KEES CHALMERS Tsunami sirens along the coastline will be re-tested on July 13. Forty five sirens between Brooklands and Taylors Mistake will sound for up to three minutes at 11am on the last Sunday of the school holidays. Residents will hear a tone followed by a message: “This is a test of the tsunami warning sirens. Do not be alarmed. This is only a test.” The new testing date follows the earlier failure in April to test the sirens, due to the sole operator of the technology, based in Auckland, dealing with a car accident outside their house at the time the sirens were scheduled to go off. City council civil defence and emergency management manager Brenden Winder said it is important the sirens are re-tested to ensure they work effectively. “We recognise the critical importance of testing the tsunami sirens and acknowledge the confusion that the earlier failed test created,” he said. “We’ve had discussions with our supplier and we have sufficient safeguards in place to ensure this test will go ahead as planned. It is only a test and there is no need for anyone to evacuate.” Winder said reminders would be put out closer to the testing date. In the event of an immediate tsunami threat, Civil Defence and police would use the cellphone-based Emergency Mobile Alert system, radio, television, social media, sirens and local community networks to alert residents. There are concerns the siren network along Canterbury beaches is unfit for purpose as a primary emergency mechanism due to its age and outdated technology. Said Sumner Community Residents’ Association chair, Andrea Davis: "It [siren test PHOTO: CCC failure] highlighted the fact the system is not automated. From our point of view, a foolproof automated system is what is needed, "Quality over quantity, the more people who are prepared the better - you have a text and a siren there is no indecision." There is a proposal to reduce the 45 sirens to about 10 located at specific points where the efficiency of alerting systems such as EMAs may be reduced. It will be discussed by the city council on <strong>June</strong> 10. Locations of the 10 sirens may include areas where people are less likely to have cell phones. Named Terra Nova, the pilot transfer boosts Lyttleton’s pilot fleet to two modern launches. Henry Bastion, LPC Marine Fleet Manager, says Terra Nova is one of the industry's safest and most efficient pilot vessels. “Terra Nova is crucial for the consistent and safe transfer of pilots, especially in challenging conditions with swells up to three or four meters,” said Henry Bastion. Andrew Van der Bent, Head of Marine Operations, says the LPC Pilot Launch Team suggested the name Terra Nova, which means 'new land' in Latin. “It’s fitting for modern-day vessels visiting Lyttelton from around the world to be greeted by a pilot vessel with such a distinguished name,” said Andrew Van der Bent.
