ByROBYN BRISTOW
Feral cats are in the spotlight at
the Hurunui District Council.
The council is urging the
Department of Conservation to
consider feral cats in its longterm
plan to rid the country of harmful
predators.
As afirst step it is recommending
legislation to have domestic cats
registered, microchipped and
desexed.
The council is submitting on the
Predator Free 2050 Strategy
Review and the Implementation
Plan for Te Mana oteTaiao –
Aotearoa New Zealand
Biodiversity Strategy 2020.
Council’s Water and Land coordinator
Rima Herber, on behalf
of acouncil working group
including West Ward councillors
Tom Davies, Ross Barnes, and
Dave Hislop, presented draft
submissions for endorsement at
last week’s council meeting.
Ms Herber says the intention of
Predator Free 2050 is to remove
rats, mustelids and possums from
New Zealand by 2050.
However it was appropriate for
the council to advocate for cats to
be included in the longer term —
along with mice and hedgehogs if
technologies became available to
make this possible and practical.
These measures would help
reduce the number of stray cats
that become feral, Ms Herber says.
‘‘There are an estimated more
than 2.5 million feral cats in New
Zealand.
‘‘As arural council, Hurunuiis
very aware of the harm feral cats
are doing to indigenous wildlife,
and aware of how many cats there
are in our environment.
‘‘If feral cats aren’t included as a
pest species it is questionable if
predator removal is worthwhile in
some environments.”
Hurunui District Mayor Marie
Black says feral cats are amajor
issue in looking after Hurunui’s
Feral cats in focus ... Aferal cat pauses after being disturbed.
indigenouswildlife and, from a
farming perspective,the diseases
feral cats carried were a‘‘massive
threat’’ to domestic stockacross
the district.
Ms Herber says council broadly
supports both strategy reviews but
raises several issuesfor further
consideration, including
consideration for incentives and
support for private landowners,
catchment groups, the QEII Trust,
and community conservation
groups working to both eliminate
predators and protectbiodiversity.
‘‘Biodiversity protection should
not be an added financial burden
on landowners.’’
For community groups, support
could be in the form of funding for
paid coordinators to optimise
work already being carried out in
communities.
Cr Fiona Harris says many of the
district’s rural residents and
Hurunuifarmers haveput
PHOTO: FILE
significant time and effort into
indigenous biodiversity
protection.
‘‘It's good to see that we
recognise that, and support them
as well, because for many of them
it’s adeep money hole doing alot of
this work.’’
Cr Harris says many in Hurunui’s
communitiesand schools are
supporting Predator Free
initiatives.
Acoordinator would make abig
difference‘‘because sometimesit's
just knowing where to be and who
to get in touchwith —it's amassive
body of work and challenging for
the whole country, sowehaveto
optimise what we can’’.
Ms Herber says it’s important to
maintain the gains already made in
predator control ‘‘as apriority’’.
‘‘It is better to secure the areas
that are predator free and keep
them that way, than spread effort
thinly and lose the gains.’’
Large solarfarm
consent notified
in the Hurunui
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Waipara residents are being encouraged to have
their say on aproposed 180.8ha solar farm, on a
242.4ha property near their village.
The Hurunui District Council has notified a
resource consent application from Aucklandbased
Far North Solar Farm Ltd to builda143.8 MWp
solar farm.
The Waipara Residents’ Association wrote to the
council last year calling for the consent to be
notified, and chairperson Steven Ellis says he is
pleased the community will have asay.
He says there are arange of views in the
community.
‘‘Everyone has their own views one way or the
other for different reasons.
‘‘Some can’t see aproblem and there’s others who
think it is not agood situation to have asolar farm
this close to avillage.
‘‘It is obviously going to be something quite
substantial.’’
Mr Ellis encouraged residents to have alook at
the application on the council’s website and form
their own view on how it might effect them and
‘‘whether it is agood thing for the community or
not’’.
Agroup of concerned residents formed Save
Waipara Valley last year and set up awebsite,
savewaiparavalley.com.
Among the group’s concerns are the potential
impacts on the environment, how the solar panels
would stand up to ‘‘North Canterbury's notoriously
strong winds’’, the risks to passing motorists from
glare from the panels and the impact on property
values.
Hurunui District Council staff have determined
‘‘the adverse effects of the application’’ to the
landscape and the visual effects are more than
minor.
Construction of the solar farm is expected to take
around two years.
The proposed solar farm is ajoint venture
between Far North Solar Farm Ltd, asolar energy
asset developer based in Auckland, and Aquila
Clean Energy Asia Pacific, aclean energy platform
headquartered in Singapore.
Young stars ... Rangiora’s Hartley School of Performing Arts students take abow after aperformance ofthe school’s latest musical
production, Rapunzel, in the Rangiora Town Hall Theatre this month.
Theatrical magic in Rapunzel
BySHELLEY TOPP
Rangiora’s Hartley School of
Performing Arts (HSPA) students have
delivered aslice of theatrical magic in
the school’s latest musical production of
Rapunzel.
They had huge support from HSPA’s
talented lineup of tutors, community
volunteers, sponsors and parents, who
also contributed in some way to the
success of this charming show.
The production was based on the
famous fairytale of the same name, but
alsoincorporated others including
Snow White and the Seven Dwarves,
Little Red Riding Hood, Hansel and
Gretel, and The Three Little Pigs.
It was aspectacular showcase of
theatrical performance, encompassing
song, dance, music, costumes, scenery,
storytelling and special effects with a
lengthy script written specially for the
show by HSPA’s founder and director,
Dale HartleyBrown.
The script was edited by the directors
of the show, former HSPA drama
students, Hannah Thompson and
Michelle O’Brien, who are now tutors,
but it remained alengthy production of
almost three hours, with 265 costume
changes, because Dale wanted to give all
of the 130 students (aged 1118 years)
who took part in it ‘‘the opportunity to
shine’’.
The hugely talented young cast
achieved that with energy and style.
Standouts included Tara Browne as
Rapunzel,Azaria Westeneng as Finn
Walker, ReeniRose Dolan as Mother
Gothel, Tyler Waghorn as Prince
Charming, Maty Fauth as Footman,
Alyssa Garrett as Narrator, Emelia
Coster as Fairy Godmother, Julia Carter
as Little Red Riding Hood and Jaxon
Melville as Big Bad Wolf.
Rapunzel,opened in the main
auditorium of the Rangiora Town Hall
on July 3and included five
performances over three days with
large, supportive audiences including a
‘‘sold out crowd’’ for the final matinee.
Initiative improving roadsides
Anew‘‘lighttouch’’ initiative to improve
roadside drainage across the Hurunui
District is already proving its worth.
Atotal of 150 kilometres of roadside
has been cleared in just the first month of
council’s wheeled excavator programme.
‘‘Water is the biggest enemy of the
roading network,’’ says council’s chief
operationsOfficer Dan Harris.
‘‘The wheeled excavator programme is
helping to move water away from our
roads as quickly as possible, making a
real difference to road safety and road
quality.
‘‘It’sasmart, lighttouch approach,’’
says council’s roading manager Charlie
Hutt. ‘‘We’re opening up culvert ends,
getting water moving and making note of
the roads needing alittle more.’’
He says the work often occurs where
largescale drainage work would have
been too costly or disruptive.
Twowheeled diggers are employed to
carry out the roadside drainage
improvements, reshaping and clearing
culverts, removing trees and opening up
blocked drainage channels.
Each digger is accompanied by a
spotter, armed with ashovel and asharp
eye, ensuring targeted, efficient
maintenance.
Councillor Robbie Bruerton, chair of
the operations committee, says the
initiative is a‘‘good piece of work, done
the right way’’.
‘‘The biggest complaints we were
getting were about drainage and road
deterioration.’’ The programme had
tackled those issues, with real cost
savings,’’ Cr Bruerton says.
The programme follows atrial
undertaken in 2023, with an additional
pilot carried out in 2024 around wellknown
hot spots in the district that were
prone to flooding.
Mr Hutt said these previously problem
areas were performing well, even after
recent rain.
Funding for this, and the next two
financial years has been budgeted for in
the Long Term Plan.
Part of afurther year will be funded by
Resilience Improvements money
granted by Waka Kotahi NZTA, on
council’s Vulnerable Roads.
Mayor Marie Black welcomed the
success of the trial.
‘‘This is agreat example of innovation
and partnership delivering better
outcomes for our communities.’’

Just six points separated first and second
place at the 2025 FMG JuniorYoung
Farmer of the Year title finale held in
Invercargill last week.
Rangiora High School students John
Lundy and Harry Parish hoisted the
winner's trophy high at the televised prize
giving.
‘‘This was our first time at the finals and
we won it,’’ says John.
The sixteenyearolds had won the
Tasman berth at the FMG Junior Young
Farmer of the Year regional finals back in
March, and travelled south to Invercargill
with their families to take part in the finals
during the first week of the June school
holidays.
‘‘We missed out on qualifying for the
finals last year, so we were both
determined to make it this year,’’ says
John.
On Thursday, they completed an exam
which they felt went well, then early on
Friday morning, the young men lined up
against the top seven regional high school
teams for the practical day held at the
Winton Racecourse.
The AgriKids, FMG Junior,and FMG
Young Farmer of the Year contestants
completed all their practical challenges
sidebyside,showcasing their skills,
teamwork, and determination in front of a
large crowd of family, supportersand the
public.
First up, the Rangiora pair had to set up
afarmlet,
‘‘There we had to do amixture of
fencing, stock water, drainage and
planting —lots of different stuff like that,
which we had two and aquarter hours to
do at all,’’ says John.
In between, they presented aspeech on
aset topic and then completed seven
handson modules covering various topics
related to the event sponsors —amini
version of what the finalists in the FMG
Young Farmer of the Year competition
had to do on the same day.
On Friday evening the topfive teams
battled it out in Face Off and Q&A sessions
overfive rounds, before the FMG Junior
Young Farmer of the Year was
announced.
TheRangiora pair won the title and also
won first place in the farmlet competition,
first in the modules competition and were
third in the preevent fundraiser.
‘‘It was very close between us and the
teamfrom Napier Boys’ High School, who
had made the finals last year as well.’’
For John, he thinks it was the tidiness of
the farmlet which gave them the extra
points to winagainst schools and
competitors who had been to the finals
before.
‘‘We did avery good job of keeping our
farmlet nice and tidy, and Ithink that
madethe difference,’’ says John.
John and Harry say they had put in the
long, hard hours of practice in the months
leading up to the final.
‘‘We were prepared for everything. We
had all the tips and tricks sheets from the
organisers to guide us, to let us focus on
the things that mattered, and all those
itemscame up in the competition.
‘‘The work we did helped us get agood
general base over all aspects of farmwork,
which really helped usalot.
‘‘Nothingwas harder or easier than
everything else; we just needed to work as
ateam.’’
Harry thanks the parents as they did all
the organising which allowed the boys to
focus on learning everything they needed.
‘‘We learnt alot and it showed as in one
of the modules we were the fastestto
change the chainsaw and bar,’’ Harry says.
John says he is more sheep and beef
focused, while Harry is more dairy and
science focused.
John says everyone was super helpful
down there. His mum went down with him,
and Harry's family travelled down to
support him, while anumber of friends
and family also watched the competition
livestreamed online.
Harry and John extend their thanks to
the wonderful organising committee, the
sponsors of the event and everyone who
helped them.
supported by all parties in Parliament.
But rural health outcomes continue to
trail behind urban communities, with
twice as preventable deaths and 60
percent moresuicides.
MrsBlack said there needed to be
moresupport for support workers
caring for elderly in their own homes.
Health NZ Canterbury West Coast
group manager integration Greg
Hamilton said Health NZ is working
with healthcare providers to review how
they can better serve clients across the
South Island.
‘‘Rather than just coming in and doing
the dishes or doing the cleaning, the
focus is now on reenabling people to
achieve the best life they can.’’
He said the priority is supporting
peopletostay in their own homes.
Mr Doocey said Mrs Black had raised
concerns about alack of ‘‘wellbeing
funding’’ alongside more specialist
mental health services, which had led to
morefunding to support rural
communities, including arecent boost to
Support foryoung people including
accessing mental health services,
support forLGBT+ youth, driver
and alack of access to ultrafast
broadband in rural areas were also
raised as wellbeing issues.
Other concerns included access to
training for health workers in rural
practises, support for migrants, and a
lack of awareness of what services are
available in rural areas.
Mr Doocey said addressing ‘‘unmet
but also education on ‘‘what is
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
A$56.4m Government investmentinwater
boost for North Canterbury farmers, says
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black.
Associate Regional Development
Minister Mark Patterson visited the region
last week to announce three Canterbury
water storage and irrigation projects will
receive loans from the Government’s
Regional Infrastructure Fund.
Mr Patterson made the announcement
at the Taggart family’s woolshed at Cust on
Thursday, July 3, and was joined by
Waimakariri MP Matt Doocey, Kaikōura
MP Stuart Smith and WaimakaririMayor
Dan Gordon.
Mrs Black was unable to attend the
announcement, but later said the
investment is good news for the region.
The Balmoral water storage facility run
by the Amuri Irrigation Company (AIC)
will receive $20m, Waimakariri Irrigation
Ltd (WIL) will receive $15.6m, and the
Opuha Dam and irrigation scheme in
South Canterbury $20.8m.
‘‘Amuri Irrigation Company has been
progressive in its vision for storage on the
north side of the Hurunui River to build
resilience for its shareholders,’’ Mrs Black
said.
‘‘This announcementisasignificant
step in achieving this goal.’’
AIC chairperson David Croft said his
company plans to build apond to store up
to 10 million cubic metresofwater and can
be used in the winter and shoulder
seasons, using existing resource consents.
‘‘It is quite clear the rural sector is
leading the New Zealand economy, and
this investment can help our economic
recovery.
‘‘And we will end up with agreatasset
for the whole of North Canterbury.’’
Securingthe futureof
NZ’sinfrastructure
Our Government is taking decisive
action to ensure New Zealand’s
infrastructure is fit for the future.
We’ve launched a30year National
Infrastructure Plan,apractical,
forwardlookingblueprint that lays out
how we’ll plan, fund, and maintainthe
essential services Kiwis rely on every
day.
For too long, shortterm thinkinghas
left us with crumbling assets, delayed
projects, and poor value for taxpayer
money.
Despite being one of the highest
infrastructure spendersinthe OECD,
New Zealand ranks near the bottomfor
outcomes.
That’s simply not good enough and
we’re changing it.
This Government is putting
infrastructure at the heart of our
economic strategy.
We’ve introduced new funding tools,
revitalised the PublicPrivate
Partnership model, and established the
National Infrastructure Funding
Finance Limited (NIFFCo) to help
finance growthenabling projects.
We are also replacing the outdated
RMA to streamline consenting and get
critical projects under way faster.
But infrastructure isn’t just about
newbuilds, it’s also about looking after
what we have already got.
Too many government agencies lack
basic asset registers or maintenance
plans.
That’s led to mouldy classrooms,
leaky police stations, and costly repairs.
We are fixing that with anationwide
programme to lift asset management
standards across the public sector.
What sets this draft Plan apart is its
independence, its evidence base, and
its longterm focus.
It identifies where investment is most
needed, sets clear priorities, and
proposes reforms to improve how
governmentmanages infrastructure.
The Infrastructure Commission has
released the draft, and we are inviting
New Zealanders to have their say.
The finalPlan will be delivered by the
endofthe year, with aformal
NC Mayors call for
clarity on regional
council alternatives
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
North Canterbury’s mayors say they
are not opposed to change, but they
want to know whatwould replace
regional councils.
There has been abit of chat about
scrapping regional councils, but
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black and
Kaikōura Mayor Craig Macklesay
they haveyet to see abetter
alternative.
Prime Minister Christopher
Luxon and Resources Minister
Shane Jones havesuggested
regional councils could be abolished
aspart of the Resource Management
Act(RMA) reforms.
Christchurch Mayor Phil Mauger
has expressedsupport for forming a
unitary authority, but the North
Canterbury mayors are not so keen.
Theysay the present model is
working, with Environment
Canterbury (ECan) as the regional
council, supportedbythe
Canterbury Mayoral Forum aforum
of the region’s mayors.
Mrs Blacksaid the mayoral forum
has worked well together this term.
‘‘We haveall brought into the
mantra, if it’s good for one, it’s got to
be good for all.
‘‘If we can all hold true to that, you
don’t lose the voiceofthe small
ruralareas against the big metro.’’
Hurunui District Council chief
executive Hamish Dobbie said
geographically his districtisthe
same size asregions like Taranaki,
but has just9205 ratepayers.
‘‘Those places with unitary
authoritiesact as aonestop shop,
but you probably need acertain
population base to make it viable,
and what that population base is,is
the question.’’
Mr Mackle said with just 3082
ratepayers, there is no way his
council could take on ECan’s
functions, such as looking after
rivers, environmental issues, pest
control and flood mitigation.
It would mean amalgamating with
either the Marlborough District
Council, aunitary authority in the
north, or other Canterbury councils
to the south.
‘‘I’m not opposedtochange, but
‘‘What representationwould we
have? Do we want to loose our voice
Former Waimakariri District
Council chief executive Jim Palmer
led areview of local government,
with areport presented to
Parliament in 2023.
He said looking at the structure of
local government in isolation was
unlikelytoachieve asustainable
outcome.
Other issues such as funding,
partnership with central
Government, empowering local
government to developlocal
solutions, enabling ‘‘citizenled
democracy’’, improved governance
arrangements and embracing the
Treaty ofWaitangi also needed to be
addressed.
‘‘Local government needs to be
given the opportunity to lead the
design process, supported by central
Government,’’ Mr Palmer said.
Unitary authorities or ‘‘combined
networked councils’’ were possible
alternatives, but each regionis
different.
‘‘In my view, just transferring
regional council functions to
existing councilswould be
unworkableasmost local
authorities do nothave the
capacity,’’ Mr Palmer said.
‘‘It requires acertain critical mass
to operate effectively.’’
Combined networked councils is
where local councils appoint
representatives to make decisions at
aregional level, similar to the
Greater Christchurch Partnership,
which brings together
representatives from the
Christchurch, Selwyn and
Waimakariri councils and ECan.
Moving on ... The Reverend Sandy Constable says she won’t forget the fun she’s had and
people she’s met serving the Parish of Kaiapoi.
PHOTO: JOHN COSGROVE
Reverend moving on
By JOHN COSGROVE
Over the pasteight years,the
Reverend Sandy Constable has
affectionately been called the ‘flying
nun' for racing around Kaiapoi on her
electric scooter to attend functions or
services,orthe Vicar of Dibleyfor her
bubbly, effervescent personality.
But now she is moving on.
‘‘Being the Vicar of the Parish of
Kaiapoi has been alot of fun and is full
of memories,’’she says.
‘‘I have so many amazing memories
of the parish, its people and the
wonderful community of faith here,
but now it’s time for me to move onand
help the church in other ways.’’
Rev Sandy will be taking some time
off to study, attend some conferences
and write apaper on her study topic
before she embarks on the next step in
her career.
It is acareer that spans 20 years,
serving in the North and Central
Canterbury regions.
It will be alife that’s quite different
from her time spent looking after the
faithful atthe four districts in the
parish: Kaiapoi, Clarkville, Ohoka,
and Eyreton and the threechurches in
herparish—StBartholomew’s, St
Augustine’s and St Thomas’.
“After aperiodofstudy, Iamlooking
forward to taking on the role of
chaplaincy with the Anglican Church.
‘‘It’s about looking at agreater
pastoral focus in Ministry in a
community, or ahospital or school,”
she says.
The former New Zealand Army
Reservist says she is even considering
joining the armed forces as a
Chaplain/Padre.
‘‘I have had so much joy over the
years working with the team at the
KaiapoiRSA as their padre, and I
wouldlike to continue serving the men
and women ofour armed forces.
‘‘I will miss the wonderful times I
have had in Kaiapoi, the midnight
Christmas services, the GoodFriday
and Seafarers services.
‘‘I have enjoyed them all, including
the weeklyLast Post service at the
RSA,’’ she says.
Rev Sandy says it is nowuptothe
diocese to begin the process of
appointing anew vicar, and to pass on
the baton of the KaiapoiParish to
another.
In the meantime, aPriestinCharge
willcontinue the services while the
parish finds areplacement.
Newroad names
The naming of the two private roads,
both in the Amberley Country Estate
Retirement Village, have been
approved by the Hurunui District
Council.
The new McEwan Crescent will pay
homage to Gordon McEwan, a
blacksmith who worked forArthur
Burke Ltd Blacksmith Shop during the
20th century, and was put forward as a
‘‘tribute to local craftsmanship and
community backbone’’.
The second namesake lives in the
Amberley Country Estate, closetothe
new road that will bear her name:
Lodge Lane ‘‘in honour of Helen
Lodge, arecent recipient of the
Hurunui District Council Community
Service Award’’.
Helen and her husband, formerly
Amberley’s local police constable,
have served the community for
decades.
There are few community
organisations Helen hasn’t served on.
Her Community Service Award,
awarded last year, recognises her
service to the Amberley Lions’ Club,
the Amberley District Community
Vehicle Trust, Amberley Returned
Services Association, Poppy Day
Appeal, Hato Hone St John, Cancer
Support, the Dementia Unit in
Amberley, IHC, and more.
Arriving in Amberley 40 years ago
from Otago, Helen has been a
volunteer for most of her life and, she
says, her husband Mike was amember
of the Lions Club for 50 years.
‘‘He was the last of the solecharge
policemen,’’ she says.
Council’s Planner Scott Rose says
while councils are responsible for the
naming of public roads, it is common
for privatelyowned retirement
villages to request the naming and
registration of private roads for easy
navigation around the villagefor
residents, visitors,postal services and
emergency services.
‘‘Council involvement ensures
consistent naming and avoids
duplication and confusion with any
existing public roads. It also ensures
these names are known to council for
future road naming.’’

FamilyBoost to benefit more families
TheEarly Childhood Council says
changes to FamilyBoost are welcome
and will have apositive effect across
the sector.
The announcement this week
means more families can access
support with their costs, and
increase children’s ability to access
quality childcare, ‘‘potentially for
longer than before for families who
were struggling”said
EarlyChildhood Council CEO Simon
Laube.
‘‘Adjusting the thresholds also
means the payments households get
from IRD are nearly doubling after
today’s changes.
‘‘I’m pleasantly surprised how
much more generous FamilyBoost
has become, it’s sure to stimulate
great interest from parents.’’
Finance Minister, Nicola Willis,
says the changeswill mean families
receive much higherFamilyBoost
payments,and more families will
now be eligible for the scheme asof
July 1.
‘‘The long term ECE funding
shortfall means many families are
finding rising centre fees
unaffordable, so boosting
FamilyBoost should help.
‘‘Including FamilyBoost in the
FundingReview’s scope is avery
wise move.
‘‘We need the whole system to work
togethertoaddressthe real
challenges facing families who need
childcare,our rising expectations in
NewZealand about the quality of
ECE services that should be provided
and the current sharedcost model
between government subsidies/
schemesand families’ability to pay.”
Mr Laube says “We welcomed
FamilyBoost from the start, and have
supportedIRD with its changes.
‘‘If you were sitting on the fence
about FamilyBoost, the
announcement makes it so much
more attractive.
‘‘We strongly recommend parents
with childreninECE register to
access the rebates.
Remember you can still claim
FamilyBoost for child care costs from
last year as well,’’ Mr Laubesays.
Learning through seeing, feeling, smelling
Early learning helps children to be
confidentand curious about the world.
It also helps them do better when they
go to schoolorkura.
Already your child is learning through:
Everything they do, see, feel, smell, taste
and hear.
Everywhere they go.
Everyone who talks, smiles and plays
with them.
Research shows that children who are
involved in quality early learning services
benefit in many ways, and that their family
and whanau and the wider community
benefit too.
Early learning services build on the early
learning your child is already doing:
Athome with whanau.
Onthe marae or at church.
Playing with their friends.
Early learning services can help your
child learn important skills that will help
them become strong, happy, and
successful in later life.
Early learning services help your child
learn to get on well with other children
and with adults by learning to:
Make friends, to share and take turns,
and to cooperate.
Listen to others and to communicate
their own ideas.
Beindependent and to take
responsibility for others needs as well as
for their own.
Children who take part regularly in
quality early learning services are likely to
be confident and curious about the world,
and this can help them do better when
they go to school or kura. Early learning
services support your child to:
Become resilient to manage challenges
and to stick at it when things get difficult.
Settle more easily at school or kura and
Artistic endeavours ... Attending an early learning service helps children learn howtoget along with others and explore their
creativity.
to get the benefitsofeducation more
quickly.
Early leaning will help them become lifelong
learners, for example:
Talking, singing, and listening to stories
build children's language skills and help
them to love books and reading.
Painting, dancing, making music,
dressing up, and pretendplay help to
develop children's imaginations and
creativity.
Puzzles, number play, and counting
games help children to understand maths
concepts.
Building or construction activities,
helping to preparefood, caring for plants
and animals, and playing with water and
sand (measuring and mixing) support
children to learnabout maths and science
concepts.
Early learning service is fun and friendly
it is something the whole family can share.
PHOTO: FILE
Whānau are welcome at early learning
services.
Early learning services support whānau
to help children learn and grow.
Whānau understand the importance of
education and get involved in their child's
education early.
The benefits of early learning services
spread to the whole whānau and to the
wider community as well.
Redwood runner up
By SHELLEYTOPP
NEWS
The North Canterbury News, July 10, 2025
11
Waimakariri’sTree of the Year, Rangiora
Borough School’s giant redwood, has been
voted runner up to abeloved North Otago
landmark, in the national Tree of the Year
competition.
The Chook Tree, aquirky chickenshaped
macrocarpa (Hesperocyparis
macrocarpa), situated in the rolling hills of
Waianakarua, took the 2025 Tree of the
Year New Zealand title ahead of ashortlist
of six finalists.
Waimakariri’s Tree of the Year
competition was organised by the
WaimakaririDistrict Council’s
Greenspace team.
Aspokesman for the team, senior
biodiversity ranger Mike Kwant said trees
provide ‘‘hugely significant benefits for
everyone’’, but these were often taken for
granted.
The Waimakariri and the Tree of the
Year New Zealand competitions were
‘‘really about taking the time to stop and
acknowledge that our trees are important
to us for lots of different reasons and the
kids at Rangiora Borough School showed
us this in bucket loads’’.
The annual competition, which was
established in 2022, is run by the New
Zealand Notable Trees Trust (NZTT) to
encourage the public to think about the
role trees play in our lives, culturally,
environmentally,and socially.
‘‘We believe this year was our most
successful yet in that regard,’’ trusteeBrad
Cadwallader said.
‘‘We saw the highest numberofvotes
ever cast, ahuge increase in public
awareness, and great media coverage
across the board.
‘‘All finalists gained national visibility
and local celebration, and that is awin in
itself,’’ he said.
``We have been genuinely impressedby
the passion, creativity, and local pride
Runner up ... Rangiora Borough School’s
Redwood has come runner up in the Tree of
the Year New Zealand 2025. PHOTO: SUPPLIED
shown by all the tree supporters thisyear.
‘‘The Tree of the Year campaign isn’t
just about selecting awinner, it is about
shining alight on the incredible trees that
shape our communities, spark our
imaginations, and connect us to place and
history. Each of the six finalists brought
something unique and valuable to the
national conversation, and all of them
were deserving of the broader recognition
they gained as aconsequence,’’ he said.
This year’s result also showed ‘‘just how
much New Zealanders love agreat story
and atree with real personality’’, he said.
‘‘While all six finalists were remarkable
in their own right, there was something
about TheChook Tree’s quirky shape and
downtoearth origin that really struck a
chord with the public. It is areminder that
treesdon’t have to be ancient or enormous
to bemeaningful, they just need to make us
smile, spark curiosity, or remind us of who
we are. The Chook Tree did all three.’’
GoWireless expands business
By JOHN COSGROVE
Nineteen years ago Dale and Alison
Robertsstarted their information
technology company —GoWirelessNZ—
in their garage at Woodend.
As they grew, and expanded their
business, they moved to Kaiapoi, then after
acouple of years moved into number one
Kingsford Smith drive in the new Rangiora
Business Hub.
Today, the company is aleading supplier
of wireless networking equipment
throughout New Zealand, Australia and
the South Pacific.
Last Friday, the couple and their 28 staff
members officially opened their new
corporate headquartersand warehouse
further down the road at number 34.
‘‘It’s double the space and abetter fit,’’
says Allison.
‘‘Our thanks to builder Tuatara
Structures for putting on the day to thank
all their subbies and contractors.’’
The couple also credit EnterpriseNorth
Canterburywith helping them on their
journey that expanded from their garage to
now apurpose built over 300sqm office
buildingand 1886sqm warehouse space.
Dale says the business was hamstrung in
the previous building for space and the
new warehouse will provide the freedom
to grow. He says it took staff just three days
to move the 230,000 product items from
their old premises down the road to
number 34.
Tuatara Structures project manager
Cameron McLean says it started working
on the site in August 2024. ‘‘We worked
Workshoponlocal government’sfuture
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Recent media coverage has prompted
the Canterbury Regional Council to
proactively engage in the debate on the
future of local government.
Environment Canterbury (ECan) held
aworkshop yesterday (Wednesday, July
9) to debate possible models for regional
government.
The workshop follows comments from
Prime Minister Christopher Luxon and
Resources Minister Shane Jones
suggesting regional councils could be
abolished as part of the Resource
Management Act (RMA) reforms.
ECan chairperson Craig Pauling said
while the recent commentary was
‘‘unhelpful’’, aconversation was needed
and should involve all levels of
government and iwi partners.
‘‘Significant local government and
resourcemanagement reform has been
on Government agendas for some time.
‘‘As acouncil we agree the current
structureand funding for local
government needs work.
‘‘Instead of waiting for the
Government to make changes, we’ve
proactively been doing work at our
council to understand how the reforms
might impact Canterbury,and what we
can do to ensure good outcomes forour
natural resources, our communities and
our economy.’’
Mr Pauling said the workshop will
give councillors an opportunity to
discussrepresentation, local voice, and
what services and regulatory functions
could be best delivered at anational,
regional or local level.
‘‘We’re not going to land on aspecific
structure, or proposed futurestate.
‘‘The workshop gave us the
opportunity to discuss the whole
ecosystem of local government decision
making, and to test some ideas with each
other.’’
Deputy chairperson Deon Swiggs said
the workshop builds on the momentum
from the May council meeting, where
councillors reached shared positions on
key issues for the region.
‘‘Canterbury’s scale, diverse
landscapes, and active economies
present both opportunities and
responsibilities.
‘‘We’re aregion shaped by aunique
environment and strong local
industries, and require tailored
approaches to our place.’’
Dr Swiggs said he believed ECan is
well placed to contribute constructively
to national conversations on the future
of local government.
The workshop will run from 10.30am
on today (Wednesday, July9), and will be
livestreamed on the Canterbury
Regional Council YouTube channel.
Five people rescued offboat after incidentonMotunau bar
Five people were rescued after they
experienced serious problems crossing
the Motunau bar on Sunday might. Fuel
tanks were swept overboard when the boat
was swamped by alarge wave, and a
person was also thrown over board when
3m waves continued to pummel it even
after it managed to turn around and
anchor about 400m offshore in rocky
conditions between Motunau Island and
the bar.
Others onboard were able to recoverthe
person and get them back onboard safely.
Meanwhile the North Canterbury
Coastguard set sail from its Waimakariri
River base to reach the stricken vessel and
rescue its five occupants.
The vessel was spotted by an individual
near Motunau Beach about 5pm, and
seeing it in difficulty alerted police.
Around 8pm, afaint ‘mayday’ distress
call was heard on VHF channel 63. The
individuals onboardalso used amobile
phone while the battery lasted, as well as
aPersonal Locator Beacon (PLB) and an
Emergency PositionIndicating Radio
Beacon (EPIRB) to call for help.
At about 8:45 pm, five volunteers from
CoastguardNorth Canterburyonboard
‘Kaiapoi rescue’ vessel, navigated their
way through the dark, rocky conditions,
ensuring kelp wasn’t being ingested into
their engine, and arrived on the scene and
took the five boaties on board.
They started to warmthem up with
blankets and heat pads, to help slowly
bring theirbody temperatures back up.
The group of five weresafely taken back
to shore, where two Hato Hone St John
ambulances were waiting to treat them.
One individual was taken to hospital with
injuries sustained during the bar crossing
attempt, and three others were treated for
hypothermia.
Unit President, Kevin Bryce said
although it was aharrowing and
concerning incident for the boaties
involved, they were prepared with all of
the right communications gear, and they
were wearing lifejackets.
‘‘The boaties couldn’t believe we were
able to get thereand rescue them in such
poor conditions,’’ he said.
‘‘Itwas achallenging, multiagency
operation,’’ said Kevin.
‘‘We have astandard operating
procedureinplace for bar crossings at
night, which involves markingour position
with aflare.
‘‘Due to proximity with Christchurch
International Airport, this has to be coordinated
very carefully.’’
‘‘I’d like to thank the whole team back at
was conducted.
‘‘I’d also like to acknowledge all of the
agencies we worked with to rescue these
boaties,including Maritime New Zealand
radio, Rescue coordination Centre New
Zealand, SAR Police, local Police, Hato
agencies worked together to make this
operation seamless.
‘‘We also work with members of the local
help us understand the conditions out
there. If you’re aboatie planning to cross
Breakaway rugby comp proposal ‘elitist’
ByDAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
ANorth Canterbury school says a
proposal by South Island boys
schools to establish abreakaway
rugby competition is ‘‘elitist’’ and
‘‘discriminatory’’.
Rangiora High School is
concerned aproposed South
Island boys first 15 rugby
competition will be detrimental
to coed schools.
The proposed competition
would comprise up to eight boys
schools across Canterbury and
Tasman, and five boys schools in
Otago and Southland, media
reports have suggested.
Rangiora High School board of
trustees presiding member
Simon Green the development is
‘‘deeply concerning’’.
‘‘As acoed school, we’re
deeply concernedthat locking
toplevel rugby behind aboysonly
door harms inclusivity and
risks pushing talented players
away from the very school
communities where many first
learned the game at grassroots
level.
‘‘This isn’t just about rugby it
undermines fair competition,
encourages aggressive
recruiting, and could fracture the
spirit of school sport that benefits
all of our students.’’
Around 45 principals from
Canterbury and West Coast coeducational
secondary schools
had come together to speak out
against the move.
‘‘We believe it is an attempt to
be elitist,’’ Rangiora High School
principalBruce Kearney said.
Schools behind the initiative
said they aimedtoexplore
initiatives including the arts,
culture,sport and professional
learning ‘‘designedtofoster
connection, belonging and pride
among our young men’’.
But Mr Kearneysaid it risked a
promoting male culture, after
schools have made progress in
recent years at changing ‘‘sexist
behaviour’’.
‘‘Eventhough they are talking
about improving educational
outcomesfor boys, it is difficult to
understand how it will improve
outcomes, especiallywhen coeducational
schools have boys
too.
‘‘We are not against South
Island boys schools playing
against other boys schools, but we
are against acompetition which
excludesschools because they
have girls attending.’’
Thecoedschools signed a
letterlast month which was sent
to New Zealand Rugby and
While thereare concerns top
young rugby players are often
snapped up by boys schools, Mr
Kearney said he did not believe it
has amajor impact on his school.
‘‘I don’t believe people come to
our school for rugby. They come
here because we offer all sorts of
opportunities.’’
breakaway group, Waitaki Boys’
High School of Oamaru, recently
said it had opted out of joining
the new competition in 2026.
The school’s rector Darryl
Paterson cited the financial
commitment,lack of player depth
and the amount of time required
off school as reasons for
withdrawing for now.
CanterburyRugby and New
Zealand Rugby said while they
did not control schools rugby,
they had an interest in ensuring
there were ‘‘accessible and
inclusive rugby pathways for all
young people, regardlessofthe
type of school they attend’’.
The two unions said they
hoped to meet with school
principals to discuss their
concerns.
Funding foryouthjobs significantly less
By DAVID HILL,
LocalDemocracy Reporter
New contracts have been signed and
two North Canterbury councilsconfirm
theyhave significantly less funding to
support local youth into jobs.
The Hurunui and Kaikōura district
councils will receive just $130,000 and
$100,000 respectively over the next 12
months to fund their successful
Mayors’ Taskforce for Jobs (MTFJ)
programmes, ayouth employment
scheme.
The Government is targeting getting
young people off ajobseekers' benefit,
which has led to the MinistryofSocial
Development changing its funding
criteria for the MTFJ programme.
It now means instead of helping
school leavers, the new programmes
will be primarily supportingthose ona
jobseekers’benefit.
Hurunui Mayor Marie Black said her
council’s new target is to place 15
young people into sustainable
employment, with the new measure
meaning they need to be in the job for
at leastsix months instead of three
months.
Despite asignificant funding cut, Mrs
Blacksaid she is confident her team
will surpassthe new target and achieve
other goals.
But she admits she is disappointed at
the changes to the scheme.
‘‘Thereisabit of atrend. Alot of
16yearolds are leaving school and
some are ready for work and others
need alot more support and we can’t
let those young people down.
‘‘The MTFJ programme has really
reached into the community. Our
schools understand it and our
wonderful employers understand it
and people reach out to see if there’s a
way to help, and it’s important we keep
that strength.
‘‘The part that saddens me the most
is the scheme was put in place to
support rural job seekers who were
disadvantaged by distance, but
because it has been successful our
larger neighbours have taken it up.
‘‘But we won’t lose sight of the
purpose of the scheme.’’
To ensure young school leavers are
not left behind, the Hurunui District
Council has started up anew SEED
course to support school leavers.
It is similar to programmes being run
in other districts and is being privately
funded, with no ratepayer money
required, Mrs Black said.
She said the new course will
complement the MTFJ programme and
provide support to young people before
they enter employment or further
study.
Kaikōura Mayor Craig Mackle said
his worst fears were confirmed, as his
council’s new contract has seen its
funding slashed from $260,000 to
$100,000 from July 1.
‘‘We’ve still got to do what we can, but
I’m very disappointed.
‘‘We are going to have to go through
things with afinetooth comb.
‘‘We’ve got aplan, but we will need to
see if can pull it off.’’
The jobs programme has helped
young people aged 1625 into work
through driver licensing, careers
advice and guidance, interview skills,
preparing CVs, work experience and
transport.
By SHELLEY TOPP
The Amberley District Lions' recent
collection of unwanted spectaclesto
has been ahuge success.
‘‘From our perspective the results
were beyond our wildest dreams,
considering the population of our
Atkinson said.
‘‘We received around 540 pairs of
spectacles and Arthur Burke Hammer
Warm yourself up out in the garden
How-to for beginner gardeners with Shannon Hunt
This month is possibly the hardest time of
the year for beginner gardeners to getout
into the garden, but the effort to do so will
reward you in spades. Digging, weeding
and raking in the crisp weathermakesfor
some very healthy, outdoor exercise that
brings lots of satisfying warm fuzzieswith
it.
Here are afew jobs to get you onyour way
to that happy place.
Step one: Clear out all dead and dying
plants
July is the best month for clearing you
garden of all spent plants so you can
prepare for new plantings. Pop the green
matter into your compost bin with an
equal amount of dry matter, like
newspaper, dry leaves and/or straw,
followed up with alittle sprinkle of lime,
and remember to turn it over at least once
aweek.
Remember, it’s in the heat in your
compost that breaks down the contents, so
50% green matter (nitrogen) and 50% dry
matter (carbon) is the best combo, and the
hotter it gets the quicker it composts.
Hence black bins make great compost
makers.
Step two: Choose the best place to plant
that new tree
It is not awellknown fact that most trees
do very well when planted in the crisp,
wild weather of July. Most people buy
trees in late spring, as bursting blossoms
or falling petals are areminder to buy that
fruit tree they have been wanting all year.
Planting your trees now will help them to
develop astrong root system, as they go
hunting for food, along with astrong stem
when the cold winds arrive. (Note: always
stake trees well when young.) If you are
planting afruit tree, think ahead and be
sure its ‘forever’home is open to sun, its
roots are not constantly wet or excessively
dry, the leaves and old fruit won’t drop
into your guttering, and the rootswill grow
clearofany foundations, drains and
waterways. Remember, the bigger and
widerthe canopy of the tree, the wider the
root system.
Step three: Createanew nutrientrich bed
The triedandtrue numberone rule for
growing healthy nutrientfilled veges is
good soil. Prepare your beds for spring
planting nowbyadding your natural
manure, asprinkle of goodquality lime,
some compost and potting mix for aeration
and let it all lie for at least amonth before
you plant out.
Tip: To make mowing around trees on
your propertyeasy, place aconcretering
(or two half rings under an established
tree)around the base at ground level, so
the mower glides over it easily.
Preparing beds ... Now is agood time to prepare beds in your vegetable garden forspring
planting.
Climate change boost
By DAVID HILL,
Local Democracy Reporter
Arecent study of carbon storage in
nativeforests could boost the efforts of
Canterbury’s mayors to address
climate change.
The NationalInstitute of Water and
Atmospheric ResearchLtd (Niwa)
recently completed astudy of native
forests and found they could be
absorbing more carbon dioxide than
previously thought.
The Canterbury Mayoral Forum,
whichbrings together the region’s
mayors,and Environment Canterbury
(ECan) havebeen working to address
climate change,with the forum
launching the Canterbury Climate
Partnership Plan in December.
While more research is needed,
ECansaid initial indications were
indigenous forests and some grazed
pasture areas in the South Island
could be effective at absorbing carbon.
‘‘The recent Niwaled study is an
exciting development in the way we
look at carbon in the atmosphere and
the types of ecosystems that absorb
carbon,’’ an ECan spokespersonsaid.
ECan adopted its own climate action
plan last yearand is reviewing its
forest management strategiesto
address climate risks and and carbon
opportunities.
‘‘We havebacked nativeplanting
and restoration of ecosystems on
marginal farmland as it supports
climate resilience,biodiversity and
water quality goals,’’ the ECan
spokesperson said.
‘‘We keep up to date with research
like this and take it into consideration
as our plans and policiesare reviewed
research findings are timelyasthe
forum continues to address climate
change.
‘‘We knowthat we need to work with
nature to address the dual climate and
biodiversity challenges we face.
‘‘We recognise the importance ofour
native forests and the multiple
benefits that native vegetation
provides, including absorbing
greenhouse gas emissions and
improving indigenous biodiversity.’’
But Mr Bowen said whileabsorbing
greenhouse gas emissions willhelp
the helpthe country meet its
international emissions reduction
targets, reducing emissions at source
remained the priority.
Niwa atmospheric scientist Dr Beata
Bukosa said both native and exotic
forests played avital role in absorbing
carbon through photosynthesis, but
previous studies may have
underestimated the amount of carbon
taken up by native forests.
Using advanced modelling and
Niwa’s supercomputer, the
researchers examined adecade of
atmospheric data, from 2011 to 2020.
‘‘It was thought that some areas and
land use types were in anearbalance
state with the absorptionand release
of carbon,’’ Dr Bukosa said.
‘‘Earlier estimates of how much
carbonwas removed by New Zealand
land ecosystems ranged from anet 24
to 118 million tonnes ayear.
‘‘Our research found that New
Zealand’s natural environment
absorbed around 171 million tonnes of
carbonannually.’’
Bex Green takes reins at NC Fed Farmers
With an eye to the future, all good
farmers have asuccession plan —and
that’s also the case with North
Canterbury Federated Farmers.
Karl Dean’s election as national dairy
chair at the Federated Farmers AGM
recently sees Bex Green step up as
North Canterbury’s president.
‘‘Dairy farming is my passion, but I’m
really excited that as president I’ll get to
broaden my horizons and come to grips
with the issues in meat, wool and arable
as well,’’ Bex says.
‘‘In many respects, farmers are
farmers no matter what we produce.
Many of the issues, challenges or
opportunities we have in front of us are
shared.’’
The provincial president role has
been in Bex’s sights for some time —
she's just been waiting for the right
moment for her family and her farming
business.
Bex, who contract milks 1000 cows
with her husband Blair in Culverden,
was the province’s vicepresident under
Caroline Amyes.
When Caroline stepped down in 2022,
Green’s third child was still atoddler, so
Karl took over as president.
Bex stayed on as vicepresident and
took on the province’s dairy chair role.
She’s matching Karl stepforstep on
the national front too. Bex has also just
been elected national dairy vice chair;
the role Karl has just vacated.
Bex was named Federated Farmers
2024 Dairy Advocate of the Year for her
leadership on issues such as a
streamlined path to work in the dairy
sector for immigrants.
She is keen on tackling the challenges
within meat, wool and arable areas.
‘‘I like to have agoal in front of me.
That’s what keeps me focused and
motivated. There’s also plenty of
supportfor me to call on when Ineed it
too.
‘‘Federated Farmers have avery
strong team in North Canterbury,and
we’redefinitely looking to build on that
and grow our membership and
engagement in the community.
‘‘We’ve gotasolid track record of
strong dairyspokespeople locally, but
we’realso really stepping up when it
comes to meat &wool issues, with cochairs
tackling that role.
‘‘Our North Canterbury sheep and
beef farmershave been under huge
pressureinrecent years. They’ve had all
those existing issues impacting the
sector —and then ahorrific drought on
topofthat.’’
Bex saysthe Federated Farmers
‘‘Save our Sheep’’ campaign is now well
under way and it is her hope more local
sheep farmers can be brought back into
the fold and ‘‘really give them avoice
and aplatform’’.
With abusy farm, her Federated
Farmers duties and three kids under 13,
Green’s life is busy, but she stillfinds
time for multisports.
She’s aformer Coast to Coast
competitor, having won both her
respective team categories for the last
two years, but next year will be ‘crew’ for
husband Blair as he tackles the event’s
‘Longest Day’ section.
Bex recently helped establish, and is
the first president, of the Hurunui Multi
Kaiapoirugby player’snew life in Scotland
29
By LINDSAY KERR
The sight of Josh McKay on the
sideline of the Oxford /Kaiapoi
senior rugby match on Sunday
prompted the question of
whether he was in hiding for a
call up to the Scotland rugby
side that is in New Zealand.
McKay, aproduct of the
Kaiapoi Rugby Club, where his
father Doug, aprevious player,
is the President.
Josh has made anew life for
himself as aprofessional rugby
player and now plays for the
Scottish side Glasgow Warriors
in the British United
Championship.
His reply about being on call
for Scotland, and in hiding
nearby, was ‘‘no, Iamhome on
holiday in between the rugby
seasons. Iwill though be
eligible for Scotland at the end
of 2026’’.
Ironically the day at Oxford
felt similar to awinters day in
Glasgow, however there was
one difference.
The time here was 4pm, a
time that Joshsuggested would
be darkifithad been in
Scotland.
His own career, flourished
when being chosen forthe
Canterbury NPC side along
with the New Zealand Under 20
side. He played four games for
this national side, along with 15
for the Highlanders over three
seasons,two for the Crusaders
and 50 forthe Canterbury team.
Playing in the outside backs,
since 2021 McKay (27) has
played 68 games for the
GlasgowWarriors.
In the 2023/24 season they
won the United Championship,
securing afamous victory
againstthe Bulls at Loftus
Versfield in South Africa. In
that season he was awarded the
‘‘Playerof theSeason’’ forthe
club.
He looks forwardtohis
parents onceagain visiting
Glasgowand seeing him play.
‘‘The only time they have
seen me play forthe Warriors
was early on, and we suffered a
heavy defeat,’’ he said.
Oxford takes last gasp win over Kaiapoi
RUGBY
Compiled BY LINDSAY KERR
Oxford enhanced its position
on the Luisetti Seeds North
Canterbury senior rugby table
last Saturday, with alast gasp
2519 win over Kaiapoi.
Inspite of the greasy under
foot conditions both teams
played aconstructive style of
rugby scoring six tries in the
process.
Elsewhere Glenmark
Cheviot comfortably
accounted for Saracens 468,
Ohoka beat Woodend 4215
and Ashley was too good for
Hurunui winning 337.
Points to date: Glenmark
Cheviot 30, Ashley 24, Kaiapoi
20, Oxford 17, Ohoka 16,
Hurunui 7, Saracens 5,
Woodend 1.
OxfordKaiapoi
Although the ground
conditions became greasy,
there was little wind that
favoured either side.
Early exchanges indicated
therewas little between the
two sides, and this played out
forthe 80 minutes.
Oxford did the attacking in
the opening exchanges and
was rewarded with aOscar
O'Brien try down the left flank
after 17 minutes.
It tookKaiapoi 35 minutes to
open its scoring, when aclever
try was scored by hooker Josh
Youngman who beat his
opponent with abacklike
dummy pass.
Oxford No 8Daniel Brooker
crashed over to score on the
stroke ofhalf time, and Oxford
went to the break ahead 127.
Kaiapoi was onimmediate
attack fromthe kick off and
first five eight Taine Jacobs
Lawson scored in the corner to
level the scores.
Oxford duly slotted two
penalties and held afour point
advantage until 10 minutes
from time when Syd Coster
was rumbled over the line to
score.
With five minutes remaining
Oxford missed ahandy penalty
attempt that would have put it
into the lead.
The momentum was
retained and with time up on
the clock, replacement Joshua
Brown was driven over the line
to score.
Hooker Callum Renwick was
aprominent figure in the
Oxford line up and Matt
Roberts directed play well
from first five eight.
Number eight Wiremu
Herewini was to the fore in the
Kaiapoi effort and Youngmans
try was one of his teams
highlights.
Oxford 25 (Oscar O'Brien, Dan
GlenmarkCheviot
vSaracens
It was very wet underfoot at
Omihi after the recent rain.
Saracens came out firing and
with abit of ill discipline from
GlenmarkCheviot, the visitors
took a3nil lead thanks to a
penalty by Oscar Burney.
The hosts then settled into
their work grafting away
through the forwards before
Ethan McDuff put Archie
McBride away to open the
hosts’ scoring.
GlenmarkCheviot then
found momentum leading to
Ethan McDuff finding space
and running in along range
individual try.
Although the field was
starting to rip up both teams
still tried to play running
rugby, with, at times the last
pass hitting the ground.
Stand outs for Saracens was
half back Oscar Burney who
had agreat battle with
opposite Jordy Gray.
Willy Kerr also tried hard
forthe visitors.
For GlenmarkCheviot
Ethan McDuff was Man ofthe
Match.
He was supported well by
Hayden O’Donnell in his 100th
appearance. Hamish Gibb also
worked tirelessly both on
attack and defence.
Glenmark 46 (Archie McBride
snapped up when advertised.
Waimakariri District Council road
safety coordinator Peter Daly says he was
impressed by the numbers who applied
and turned up for the twohour training
and information seminar held last
Tuesday evening..
‘‘This is the first time we have run one
of these in the Waimakariri district, and
with the help of the Waimakariri District
Council,Rangiora Motor Group, and
Zonta, it has been agreat success.’’
He says it is clear there is astrong
interest in learning the basics of car care
in afriendly, handson setting in
Rangiora.
Judith Paget, president of the Zonta
Club of Waimakariri, said the event was
held within asupportive atmosphere for
women to learn about caring for their
motor vehicles.
‘‘It is an excellent idea and Iampleased
to see such awide variety of women here
of all ages, keen to learn and ask questions
of the wonderful people here at the
Rangiora Motor Group.’’
Mechanics from the Rangiora Motor
Group, in Southbrook, covered many
aspects of what to look for when checking
vehicles, how to check oil and brake fluid
levels, how to change the battery, proper
vehicle safety, where the spare wheel is
located and how to safely change it on the
side of aroad.
Participants went from station to
station with 15 minutes allocated to each
presenter before alight snack was served,
and each received agoodie bag.
Participant Sandy Gottermeyer, a
teacher at Rangiora High School, says she
hasn’t changed atyre since she was 18,
and it was agood chance to learn those
skills all over again.
‘‘I didn’t realise that you can still do so
much to check your vehicle’s health, and
this seminar has been well worth it,’’ she
says.
Mr Daly says he was very pleased with
the turnout, and as demand was so high,
he is working with the supporters to plan
another seminar evening in the future.
