Artist pays homage to
priceless native birds
• By Kees Chalmers
CELEBRATED OIL painter
and conservationist Anna
Gibbs is using her work to
advocate for the protection of
native birds.
Her debut solo exhibition,
South Island Songs, is a
collection of oil paintings
where Gibbs blends techniques
of glazing with fair-mined
24-carat gold leaf to depict
New Zealand’s native bird life,
a technique derived from the
Dutch masters.
“When we see things like
gold, colours and jewels we
think of treasure and precious
and scarce things. For me,
birds are that so I’m trying to
convey that association,” she
said.
Gibbs also aims to raise the
profile of the conservation
work that is being done
to preserve native bird
populations.
South Island Songs has been
more than two years in the
making and was unveiled
to the public at Little River
Gallery on Friday.
Bikes on
buses ban
exemption
lodged
by ECan
• By Dylan Smits
AN EXEMPTION to the bike
racks on buses ban has been
lodged.
Environment Canterbury has
requested the racks be allowed
nationwide during daylight hours
while a permanent solution is
found to stop bus headlights being
obscured.
The decision, expected this
month, now sits with the New
Zealand Transport Agency Waka
Kotahi.
ECan’s requested exemption
would allow bikes on racks 30min
before sunrise until 30min after
sunset.
“We believe any safety issues
regarding bike racks would only
occur at night and therefore
would like to reinstate the use
of racks during daytime for our
customers,” said ECan public
transport operations manager
Derek Walsh.
The controversial ban went
into force in November after bus
operators said bus racks were not
compliant with NZTA headlight
safety regulations – even during
daytime. • Turn to page 5
No support for milestone
Canty anniversary event
• By Dylan Smits
THE CITY council and iwi
will not support a large-scale
celebration of Canterbury’s 175th
anniversary later this year.
In 2000, Christchurch hosted
a party and parade to mark the
150th anniversary of the first
four European ships arriving in
Lyttelton between December 16
to 27, 1850.
Twenty-five years later, a
proposal to hold a similar
event by a planning committee
has failed to gain traction due
to the colonial history of the
anniversary.
A meeting between the
committee, made up of
Canterbury history enthusiasts,
and council staff in September
led nowhere.
Said a city council
spokesperson: “We have
shifted towards more inclusive
and balanced historical
narratives since the 150 th
anniversary in 2000, which has
greater recognition of Māori
perspectives and the historical
harm of colonisation.”
The city council would
not support any anniversary
celebrations without support
from Ngāi Tahu rūnanga, said
the spokesperson.
However, all six rūnanga near
Christchurch told city council
staff they were not interested in
taking part in an anniversary
celebration, the spokesperson
said.
Ngāi Tahu did not respond to
Bay Harbour News when asked
why it would not partake.
After the September meeting,
Bay Harbour News understands
the planning committee was
dissolved.
This has left plans for any noncouncil
funded
anniversary
events up in the
air.
City councillor
Aaron Keown
supported the
committee’s
efforts to organise
an anniversary
event but said
Aaron
Keown
city council staff seemed to “lack
passion” for the proposal.
“It’s probably a difficult time
for the staff to commit to events
like this with the stadium and
sports centre coming along.
We’re sort of looking forward as
a city at the moment instead of
backwards,” Keown said.
He said the colonial history of
the anniversary made it difficult
for the city council to support.
“Spending any council money
or resource on anything that can
come across as controversial is
just damn near impossible,” said
Keown. “I’m not a politically
correct person who says we
must respect the treaty in all
things, but I do think it would
be disrespectful to just go ahead
and do events without their
(Ngāi Tahu) support.”
ARIO SCOOTERS hit the streets
of Sumner recently, replacing the
Neuron e-scooter brand.
Neuron failed to get its license
renewed in the city council’s
tender process to choose two citywide
operators.
Priority was given to
companies able to increase
rider numbers and meet tougher
new standards of safety and
security, using monitoring and
technology.
The city’s first ride-share
scooter operator, Lime,
successfully had their contract
renewed from January 31.
With two wheels at the front
and one at the rear, Ario claims its
Artist turns advocate to
protect unique birds
• From page 1
Gibbs said the reception so far
has blown her away.
“Having put so much time
aside towards a project, it’s really
gratifying that I’ve had such a
great response.”
Gibbs said she was expecting
one or two paintings to sell on
the first day - but after an hour,
half had already been sold.
“It was just insane and completely
overwhelming.”
Gibbs, 34, is originally a high
school teacher from London.
Even from the other side of the
world, she became fascinated by
New Zealand’s native birds from
the pictures and videos sent by
her parents, Jack and Charlotte,
who had moved to Banks Peninsula
from the UK.
Gibbs relocated to Le Bons Bay
with her husband, Stuart Foster,
four and a half years ago and
turned her artistic ambitions into
a reality by pursuing painting
full-time.
Since then, she’s dedicated her
life to her art and through it,
the conservation of native birds.
Living on the peninsula, the
firsthand exposure to the sounds
and beauty of birds only grew her
passion.
“I think I was so interested in
this idea that there’s this completely
unique ecosystem that
evolved in New Zealand because
there weren’t mammals, there’s
just nowhere else like that,” said
Gibbs.
“If we don’t protect it, it will
just be lost permanently, totally
irrecoverable.”
Gibbs previously painted
kākāpō to raise awareness for the
Kākāpō Recovery fund. She won
the premium artist award 2023
at Auckland’s Art in the Park
exhibition for her piece, Kākāpō
in the Forest.
South Island Songs includes
kea and kōtuku paintings, and
information about the kea conservation
trust and the kōtuku
nesting site in Whataroa.
Over the course of the last
three and a half years, Gibbs has
developed a considerable online
presence, with over 100k followers
on Instagram. She posts
reels of her artistic processes and
uses it as a platform to champion
native birdlife.
She said seeing so many people
connect with her work has been
“incredible.”
“It gave me the confidence that
I needed to know this was the
right thing to do.”
South Island Songs will be on
until February 24.
ECAN
Exemption sought
during daytime
• From page 1
At the time, a starnews.co.nz
poll showed 87 per cent against
the ban while only 13 per cent
agreed, out of 684 respondents.
The NZTA initially disputed
the Bus and Coach Association’s
claim the ban would need to
apply during daytime.
The association, which
represents all bus operators
including Metro, initiated the
24/7 ban as it believes safety
regulations do not specify
whether headlights can be
obscured in daylight.
If the exemption is not approved,
Walsh said cyclists may
have to wait until September
for bikes to be allowed on racks
while operators assess bus fleets
for compliance, develop solutions,
and get final sign off from
NZTA.
A national working group to
lift the ban has been formed,
which released a guide for
operators to test bus fleet
headlights and racks for
compliance.
Metro buses is currently using
the guidance to test its fleet and
find potential solutions.
Buses with racks found to
obscure headlights would need
to adjust the placement of the
bike rack, move the headlights,
or install auxiliary headlights.
Once bus operators either
receive the daytime exemption
or final sign off from NZTA, the
safety regulations will still need
to be amended to remove the
need for exemptions.
The Blanket Cats
by Kiyoshi Shigematsu
Pity Party
by Daisy Buchanan
Is three days with a cat enough to change
your life? The troubled and anxious of Tokyo
are desperate to find out. They all have their
problems - and they all want to believe that a
feline companion from a unique pet shop can
help them find a solution. But there are rules:
they must be returned after three days, and
they must always sleep in their own familiar
blankets. In The Blanket Cats, we meet seven
such customers, including a couple struggling
with infertility, a middle-aged woman on the
run from the police, and two families in very
different circumstances simply seeking joy. But
like all their kind, the blanket cats are mysterious
creatures with their own unknowable agendas,
who delight in confounding expectations. And
perhaps what their hosts are looking for isn’t
what they really need. Three days may not be
enough to change your life. But it might be
enough to change how you see it.
The hilarious and heartfelt novel you have to read
this summer... Katherine lives by the rules, ticks all
the boxes and prepares for the worst, even while
she hopes for the best. Then the worst actually
happens and, as she tries to navigate life as a
young widow, it turns out she was not prepared at
all. Nothing scares Katherine more than stopping,
but everyone insists she needs to take some time
for herself. Head to a wellness retreat, they said.
Enjoy some me-time, they said... Except this
retreat isn’t the pity party she was hoping for.
Instead of massages, she has erotic meditation,
and instead of spa treatments she has scream
therapy. Katherine has never lost control in her
life. In fact, she’s fairly certain that if she starts
screaming she might never stop. But she’s about
to let go, and everyone had better stand back...
Hilarious, heartbreaking and honest, this is a story
about learning how to stop playing it safe in a
world that feels so dangerous - and showing up to
the party, even when it feels impossible.
The Favourites
by Layne Fargo
An epic love story that reimagines the
tempestuous romance of Wuthering Heights in
the sparkling, savage world of elite figure skating
Everyone thinks Heath Rocha was my first love.
He wasn’t. My first love was figure skating. She
might not have a famous name, funding, or her
family’s support, but Katarina Shaw has always
known that she was destined to become an
Olympic skater. When she meets Heath Rocha,
a lonely kid stuck in the foster care system, their
instant connection makes them a formidable duo
on the ice. Clinging to skating - and each other
- to escape their turbulent lives, Kat and Heath
go from childhood sweethearts to champion ice
dancers. Until a shocking incident at the Olympic
Games brings their partnership to a sudden end.
Alternating Kat’s own account of her dramatic
rise and devastating fall with scandalous
snippets from the tell-all film, and capturing the
can’t-look-away intensity of Emily Bronte’s classic
novel, The Favourites is an exhilarating dance
between passion, ambition, and what it truly
means to win.
New tow tractor plays
Symbolic mural unveiled
vital role for coastguard
• By Geoff Sloan
COASTGUARD Canterbury has
welcomed the newest member of
its fleet, a Kubota tractor which
will be used to launch and recover
search-and-rescue vessels.
Given the call sign BOT,
the ‘Big Orange Tractor’ was
purchased with funds from Pub
Charity Ltd.
Coastguard Canterbury board
member Carolyn Tapley said
BOT will play a
vital role in their
search and rescue
operations.
While the new
tractor was a
dream to drive,
she said it was sad
to say goodbye to
their former workhorse,
BBT (Big
Carolyn
Tapley
Blue Tractor) which had “done us
proud for over a decade”.
Tapley said the Ford 7840
tractor was now up for sale, and
anyone interested was welcome to
contact to contact the organisation.
Meanwhile, construction of
Coastguard Canterbury’s new
$2.6m Search & Rescue Centre at
Lyttelton’s Naval Point is nearing
CRUCIAL: Coastguard
Canterbury’s new tow tractor –
completion, with an official
opening ceremony set down for
March 15.
The purpose-built two-storey
building on city council land will
be the cornerstone project for the
Naval Point Redevelopment Plan.
When completed, the new 885sq
m Search & Rescue Centre building
will offer training, meeting
and radio rooms with a harbour
lookout, along with secure storage
for the rescue boats and the towing
tractor.
Coastguard Canterbury currently
has around 25 volunteers
and three rescue vessels, based at
Lyttelton, Sumner and Kaiapoi.
Tapley said demand for their
services was growing. She said they
were still fundraising to fit-out
the new building, but when that’s
done, they will turn to fundraising
for a new rescue vessel.
Residents gathered at Mānawa Kāwhiu Lyttelton
Recreation Centre last week for a blessing ceremony to
unveil a new mural by McChesney Adams. The event,
led by Reverend Maui Stuart of Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke,
celebrated the completion of the vibrant artwork, which
symbolises the deep connection to the harbour and
the unique spirit of the Lyttelton community. The mural
project was made possible through the support of Pub
Charity Ltd, the city council’s discretionary response fund;
Resene for providing the paint; and Mitre 10 Ferrymead
for supplying the equipment. Mānawa Kāwhiu and
the Lyttelton Recreation Centre Trust expressed their
immense satisfaction with the final design, which they
hope will resonate with the wider Lyttelton community.
Lyttelton band
to play at new
country festival
• By Kees Chalmers
A BAND OF Lyttelton music
legends and other well-known
musicians are set to play at a new
festival called ‘Country in the
Country’.
Lyttelton-based band, The Eastern,
will perform at the festival in
Leeston on March 30. They have
opened for Jimmy Barnes and
Fleetwood Mac, while taking their
folk-country blend everywhere
from Nashville to Timaru.
Christchurch-based alt-country
singer Katie Thompson, who will
also be on stage for the festival,
opened for Elton John in Dunedin
in 2011.
Also performing will be 17-yearold
Southlander Carly Drysdale, a
finalist for the New Zealand country
music awards songwriter of
the year for her song Revenge, plus
Dunedin-based The Sisterhood.
The festival is the brainchild of
Selwyn Sounds co-promoter Craig
Bradford and Hang Up Entertainment
Services director Andre
Goldsmith who noticed a gap in
the festival market for country
music, in the midst of the genre’s
massive commercial resurgence.
• Ticket prices for adults
are $64 with free entry for
children 12 years and under.
How Mentoring Helped Grow
A Holistic Wellness Business
For Jenine Kerr, building a thriving
business in Ōtautahi Christchurch
has been a challenging yet rewarding
journey. After starting Nine Healing
Arts, she faced the reality of restarting
from scratch.
“I create events to help recalibrate
your nervous system,” she explains.
Offering everything from Thai Yoga
Massage to Sound Healing and ‘Gong
Baths’, it’s a business deeply rooted in
holistic wellness. However, getting back
on the ground in her hometown of
Christchurch after being away for 15
years posed unique challenges.
Kerr’s entrepreneurial journey began
in Berlin with a nomadic yoga studio.
After returning to Christchurch and
taking time off to care for her son, she
needed support to get back on track.
She found the guidance she needed at
Business Mentors New Zealand.
“Working with a mentor has been a
game changer,” she says. “My mentor,
Katherinne Jaimes, has been flexible
and supportive, helping me focus on
the basics of running a business and
marketing it effectively.”
One of the most valuable outcomes of
their work together was clarifying her
direction. “Katherinne helped me map
out my services, finances, and ‘why.’ I’m
creative by nature, so numbers weren’t
my strength, but now I have a clearer
picture of where I need to invest
my time.”
As a result, Kerr has streamlined her
business model, focusing on structured
workshops, which now generate
more income.
Kerr also recognised that marketing
was a key area for improvement. Her
mentor suggested hiring help, leading
Kerr to bring in a specialist to work on
her website and SEO. “Now, when you
Google ‘sound healing in Christchurch,’
I’m one of the first results.” With
Katherinne’s guidance, Kerr has
strengthened her social media presence
and built a more consistent brand. “I’m
getting great reviews and new clients.”
Accountability has been key. “As a
freelancer, you’re often alone. Having
someone to bounce ideas off has been
invaluable. Katherinne helps me stay on
track, even when I’m feeling uninspired.”
Kerr highly recommends mentorship
through Business Mentors New
Zealand. “It’s a very affordable
investment, and the right mentor offers
invaluable support.”
See businessmentors.org.nz if you
are interested in finding or becoming
a mentor.
Hercules make final flyover
• By Geoff Sloan
BANKS PENINSULA residents
got a chance to see New
Zealand’s celebrated air force
workhorses for the final time on
Tuesday.
Three No 40 Squadron RN-
ZAF C-130H Hercules flew over
the peninsula and city about
noon in a final salute to the nation,
ending their 60-year career
with the RNZAF.
The Hercules retirement flight
took off from Whenuapai in
Auckland on Monday, flying
along the west coast before stopping
overnight in Invercargill.
The final flight back along the
east coast took in Dunedin and
Christchurch, before landing for
the final time at RNZAF Base
Woodbourne to join two other
aircraft already there.
Four of the aircraft will retire
to the base, while New Zealand’s
first Hercules to go into operation,
NZ7001, will be parked
up inside the new $20 million
exhibition hangar to be built at
Wigram’s Air Force Museum.
The now retired fleet has been
replaced by five C-130J Hercules,
boasting greater range, speed
and capacity. The first of the new
aircraft started operations last
year, with the RNZAF taking
delivery of the final aircraft in
December.
The Jam Maker
by Mary-Lou Stephens
2025’s best new Tasmanian historical fiction based on a true
story, perfect for readers of Fiona McIntosh and Victoria
Purman. Jam is sweet but it can also burn.
Tasmania, 1874. Growing up in the impoverished tenements
along the Hobart Rivulet, Harriet Brown is used to doing
whatever it takes to survive. Including, at just twelve years old,
shearing off her hair and pretending to be a boy to secure a job as
label-paster at the George Peacock and Sons jam factory. Four years later, the
deceit becomes too much to bear and Harriet risks everything on the chance at
a future with her ambitious friend and workmate Henry Jones. But this decision
forces her into a new deception: play the role of expert jam maker, or else be
cast out onto the streets. As the secrets and lies grow, Harriet is driven to more
and more desperate choices. Choices that will end with a dangerous secret
which, if discovered, could destroy not only her life but the lives of those she
loves and protects. Intertwined with the fascinating history of the Tasmanian
jam industry and the striking historical figure Henry Jones, The Jam Maker is
a tale of danger, deceit and the desperate measures one woman will take to
succeed in love and life.
The biggest day of the
year for Kawatea/Okains
Bay is Waitangi Day – the
commemorations are the
longest-running in the South
Island.
Each year, the event is
co-hosted by Okains Bay
Museum and Te Rūnanga o
Koukourarata.
The museum opened on
Waitangi Day in 1977. Its
extensive collection of taonga
(treasures), acquired by Murray
Thacker and his family and
donated to the public, is of
national significance.
Thousands of visitors explore
the museum each Waitangi
Day, and take part in the family
fun day on the grounds, the
Ngāi Tahu reserve opposite and
the wider heritage precinct.
The day has also been one
of protest, particularly before
Ngāi Tahu’s treaty claim was
settled with the Crown in 1998.
There were protests in
1988, when Governor General
Sir Paul Reeves attended.
1980s – WAITANGI DAY
“A small skirmish broke
out when a protester
attempted to speak against
the commemoration. Within
minutes the chairman of the
Ngāi Tahu Trust Board, Tipene
O’Regan, had risen to the
occasion, and the protester’s
words were washed away with
a Māori hymn,” The Press
reported.
Other protesters from the
groups Action for an Independent
Aotearoa, Te Whanau
Amatariki, and Tematapuna
reportedly marched and sang
during the commemorations.
Deputy Prime Minister
Geoffrey Palmer and O’Regan
made speeches about legislation
and land claims, while
the Governor General said
honouring the treaty was at the
heart of the present struggle in
New Zealand.
Today, a family fun day will
Culture, cricket combine for Sukhon
• By Kees Chalmers
THE MĀORI National
Tournament has been about
more than just cricket for
Heathcote player Jamal Sukhon.
The 24-year-old off-spinning
all-rounder has been playing for
Te Waipounamu Tane (South
Island men’s) this week in the
tournament at Lloyd Elsmore
Park in Auckland, representing
Ngāi Tahu.
“It’s an honour to be picked in
the South Island side, especially
after being picked the first time.
I’m just happy to be back.”
Heathcote teammate, Harry
Sinclair, is also playing in
the tournament for Tāmaki
Makaurau.
The four-day tournament,
which finishes tomorrow,
sees the country’s top Māori
cricketers pitted against each
other as they represent their
province and iwi.
Tāmaki Makaurau (Auckland),
Northern Districts Māori,
Central Districts Māori, Te
Whanganui-a-tara (Wellington),
and Te Waipounamu (South
Island) are the provinces
competing.
Sukhon’s Māori heritage comes
from his mother’s side but he
didn’t have any connection to his
iwi or whakapapa growing up.
The first tournament took
SHOT: Jamal Sukhon beats the fielder with a cover drive playing for the Heathcote first XI.
place in 2023, an experience
that Sukhon found to be “eye
opening”.
“It’s a real treat to see that
side of the culture and there’s so
much to learn,” said Sukhon.
Players and coaches stay at a
marae and participate in a range
of cultural practices, traditional
games and performed a haka
at the tournament’s opening
ceremony.
Sukhon said the experience
has brought him closer to his
culture and prompted him
to discover more about his
whakapapa.
“It’s helped me get into
contact with my iwi and work
with them to find the history
of my culture.” He reaffirmed
the tournament’s place in the
cricketing calendar, highlighting
its significance to the sport’s
growth in Māori communities.
“I think it’s important that
they try to keep this tournament
going, because it (cricket) can
predominantly be seen as a pakeha
or a white person’s sport.
CULTURE: Sukhon said the
tournament’s significance
goes beyond cricket,
helping him understand his
whakapapa and growing the
sport in Māori communities.
“It’s so much more than
cricket, it’s about bringing people
together,” said Sukhon.
Te Waipounamu Tane will be
looking to do one better than last
tournament’s effort – they lost the
final to Tamaki Makaurau who
claimed the inaugural title.
A solid effort considering Te
Waipounamu Tane players first
met each other 10 minutes before
the first ball was bowled.
Sukhon said the vibes in the
team camp were good and he
was confident the combination of
an experienced spine and young
talent coming through would
guide them to victory.
Agile Solterra a solid first EV for Subaru
SUBARU HAS TAKEN the full
electric vehicle plunge, but it took
some hand-holding from Toyota,
who own a 20 per cent share of
the company, to get them across
the line and into the world of EVs.
Their first battery electric
vehicle is the Solterra, a
Subarufied version of Toyota’s
bZ4x EV, arrived here in March.
Its debut was a case, through
no fault of its own, of being in the
wrong place at the wrong time.
Our EV market had just been
flipped on its ear with the axing
of the previous Government’s
generous clean car rebate.
This scheme meant those
purchasing an EV costing $80k
or less received a rebate of around
$8000.
The EV road got even rockier
in April when owners had to start
paying road user charges of $80
per 1000km. No surprises then,
that EV sales this year have hit
the proverbial wall, and will take
a long time to rebound.
The Solterra not only marks
the debut of a Subaru battery
electric vehicle (BEV) in New
Zealand, it signals increased
diversification in the Subaru
model line-up that will include
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
more hybrid and EV models in
future.
The next one is expected to
be the new generation Subaru
Forester, the likely recipient of a
Toyota-developed hybrid system.
It will be transformational,
with this and other models
hamstrung by Subaru’s seriously
underwhelming hybrid system.
This why they have dialed up
Toyota help get their hybrid
house in order.
A two-model Solterra line up
heads up our market and leads
off with the standard variant
retailing at $79,990. Hard on
its heels is the more lavishly
appointed $84,990 Touring
supplied for this road test.
A two-tone paint option is
available on selected paint colours
to give your Solterra a bit more
visual street appeal.
Price-wise, the groundbreaking
Solterra sits right in the
middle of our EV market, and
faces the heat of rampant discounting
by many manufacturers
to move stock. The Subaru brand
has a strong reputation, putting
it in a slightly better position to
weather this storm.
Both Solterras are fitted with
Subaru’s acclaimed Symmetrical
All-Wheel Drive mounted to
the company’s new e-Global
Platform. Dual function
X-Mode helps traverse tricky
terrain, while 210mm of ground
clearance does its bit.
If a long new vehicle warranty
is important to you, then you
won’t find it here with only a
three-year guarantee on offer,
although it does come with
unlimited kilometres.
Even so, Subaru is dragging
their heels a bit, with most new
vehicle warranties here good
for at least five-years. MG has
thrown down a challenge to its
New Zealand rivals, recently
announcing an industry-leading
10-year/250,000km warranty.
Sitting roughly size-wise
between the Forester and
Outback, the Solterra has plenty
of power and off-road smarts,
according to Subaru.
They reckon this sets up well to
explore more remote areas, if you
are game enough to venture that
far from an EV charger.
I’m not convinced it’s capable
of mixing it in the rough stuff, or
wading through shallow creeks as
reassuringly as its siblings.
It felt like a light duties-only
AWD, happiest on reasonably
well formed tracks, and ski field
roads.
Equipped with dual electric
motors strategically positioned
Ratings out of 10: Performance 8; Handling 7; Build Quality 7;
Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value for money: 6;
Styling 7; Safety – Five star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
at the front and rear, alongside
a cutting-edge 71.4kW lithiumion
battery, Solterra delivers
a maximum power output of
160kW and 337Nm of torque
and has an NEDC test range of
485km. In real-world driving,
I found the EV range mostly
panned out at around 350km, an
okay effort, not class-leading.
The test car had more than
enough heft to shift this decent
sized SUV with plenty of urgency,
and surrounds the vehicle
occupants in a cloak of silence
as it does so in lower-speed town
driving.
It’s a repeat performance on
the open road, although the
absence of engine bay sounds
amplifies road noise, with the
tyres a bit chirpy on coarse chip
seal.
Throttle response is
exhilarating. Standing start
acceleration provided by the
electrified system makes most
conventional engines seem
pedestrian. A single-speed
automatic is ultra-smooth and
efficient.
Charging the Subaru Solterra
is easy, with both AC and DC
charging capability. Charging
from 20 to 80 per cent via a
150kW DC charger takes around
30 minutes, whereas via a singlephase
7kW AC charger, 20 to 80
per cent is a more laborious seven
to eight hour haul.
A roomy and welcoming
cabin has an abundance of
usable passenger and cargo
space. Thoughtfully designed
instruments and controls show
plenty of attention to detail, and
are easy to read and use. Stalk
controls for the windscreen
wipers and indicators are all
within easy reach of the driver.
Subaru’s all-electric offering
includes a 12.3-inch touchscreen
with satellite navigation,
the company’s Safety Sense
technology, wireless phone
charging and a panoramic
360-degree view monitor.
The heated seats, two front
and the outside rear seats, are
heavenly on cold frosty mornings,
so much so, that it becomes a real
mental battle to leave them for
the frigid conditions outside the
vehicle.
There’s an impressive
panoramic sunroof, although it
steals a few valuable centimetres
of headroom, especially for taller
back seat occupants.
The Solterra also features a
line-up of leading edge safety
kit including dynamic radar
cruise control and blind spot
monitoring that alerts the driver
to surrounding vehicles that just
out of their view.
The suspension, in unison with
the symmetrical AWD system,
offers confident and sure-footed
road holding on our usual mixed
bag of road surfaces.
With its balance, poise, and
agility, the extra weight of a
battery pack at each end of vehicle
enables it to superimpose itself
on the road. The ride is generally
comfy apart from lapsing into
listless mode over high frequency
bumps common in around town
motoring.
