Thursday February 6 2025 Bay Harbour News Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz NEWS 5 Artist turns advocate to protect unique birds • From page 1 Gibbs said the reception so far has blown her away. “Having put so much time aside towards a project, it’s really gratifying that I’ve had such a great response.” Gibbs said she was expecting one or two paintings to sell on the first day - but after an hour, half had already been sold. “It was just insane and completely overwhelming.” Gibbs, 34, is originally a high school teacher from London. Even from the other side of the world, she became fascinated by New Zealand’s native birds from the pictures and videos sent by her parents, Jack and Charlotte, who had moved to Banks Peninsula from the UK. Gibbs relocated to Le Bons Bay with her husband, Stuart Foster, four and a half years ago and turned her artistic ambitions into a reality by pursuing painting full-time. Since then, she’s dedicated her life to her art and through it, the conservation of native birds. Living on the peninsula, the firsthand exposure to the sounds and beauty of birds only grew her passion. “I think I was so interested in this idea that there’s this completely unique ecosystem that evolved in New Zealand because there weren’t mammals, there’s just nowhere else like that,” said Gibbs. “If we don’t protect it, it will just be lost permanently, totally irrecoverable.” Gibbs previously painted kākāpō to raise awareness for the Kākāpō Recovery fund. She won the premium artist award 2023 at Auckland’s Art in the Park exhibition for her piece, Kākāpō in the Forest. South Island Songs includes kea and kōtuku paintings, and information about the kea conservation trust and the kōtuku nesting site in Whataroa. Over the course of the last three and a half years, Gibbs has developed a considerable online presence, with over 100k followers on Instagram. She posts reels of her artistic processes and uses it as a platform to champion native birdlife. She said seeing so many people connect with her work has been “incredible.” “It gave me the confidence that I needed to know this was the right thing to do.” South Island Songs will be on until February 24. PHOTO: ECAN Exemption sought during daytime • From page 1 At the time, a starnews.co.nz poll showed 87 per cent against the ban while only 13 per cent agreed, out of 684 respondents. The NZTA initially disputed the Bus and Coach Association’s claim the ban would need to apply during daytime. The association, which represents all bus operators including Metro, initiated the 24/7 ban as it believes safety regulations do not specify whether headlights can be obscured in daylight. If the exemption is not approved, Walsh said cyclists may have to wait until September for bikes to be allowed on racks while operators assess bus fleets for compliance, develop solutions, and get final sign off from NZTA. A national working group to lift the ban has been formed, which released a guide for operators to test bus fleet headlights and racks for compliance. Metro buses is currently using the guidance to test its fleet and find potential solutions. Buses with racks found to obscure headlights would need to adjust the placement of the bike rack, move the headlights, or install auxiliary headlights. Once bus operators either receive the daytime exemption or final sign off from NZTA, the safety regulations will still need to be amended to remove the need for exemptions.
