Sharing Food and Ideals with a
Loved One
I’m sure you have also noticed a nearing
of the relationship between pets and their
humans over the past few years. For a
dog to sleep outside in a kennel is almost
unheard of and modern cat flaps allow our
felines to come and go as they please. This
closeness is found especially in food.
As we move towards the end of the year
it is sometimes helpful to reflect on the
trends which have solidified over the past
months and those which may do so in the
future. Many human food trends are based
on the lifestyle and choices of the pet
parents behind them, so it is not surprising
that some are transmitted to their furry
family.
One of these hot topics is the combination
of food and health. Animals cannot speak
to describe their ailments, so there is
mostly a need to observe how they are
feeling. With skin disorders there is a lot pet
food can do to help improve the situation.
Gut health is also an important category
with similar benefits. There is an obvious
temptation to overdo things, with a
cocktail of functional ingredients, vitamins
and minerals, which are individually
beneficial but in total unncessary. It’s
always good for pet-parents to take advice
from vets and other experts.
Sustainability is a trend which is still
around – and that is good. Consumers
are becoming even more aware of the
relationship between raw materials,
food processing and the supply chain.
This reflects in the change to more local
sourcing of foods, both in human and in
pet food. At the same time, consumers
are actively questioning the background
and policies in which manufacturers and
retailers are involved; this also reflects the
inclusion of some specific ingredients and
the necessity for energy and water use.
We have written several times this year
about upcycling in pet food. It is in the
nature of pet food that proteins from
slaughterhouse waste are rendered as
pet food ingredients. Even other waste
products are recycled into treats or other
pet foods, ensuring the nutrients are
retained. As human food trends move
away from meat, this is a challenge in pet
food manufacturing. At the same time,
pets are also being fed with meat-free
alternatives, in keeping with the trends
their parents are following. This in itself
leads to the need to include more specific
nutrients which animals need, but cannot
find in a meat-free diet.
At the Food Ingredients Europe exhibition
in Frankfurt this month, a new pavillion
will be devoted to pet food. PetFood PRO
will be there in Hall 4.2, stand H9. At the
same time, the first Pet Food Innovation
Award will be presented. The award
Ian D. Healey, Editor-in-Chief
will recognise the best ingredient or
application specifically for the pet food
category, in terms of sensory and physical
properties or application costs. This
underlines perhaps the most significant
trend in this sector. Pet food is becoming
increasingly more mainstream with the
overlap to human food getting smaller
every day.

How to Transition to more Plantbased
Pet Food?
by Catharina Nieuwenhuizen, Technical Director Pet Food at Barentz
Many of us feel the urgency
to move towards more
sustainable pet food. But
how can we achieve this?
While part of the change
involves improvements in
manufacturing plants and
processes, a significant
impact can be made through
ingredient selection. Pet
owners increasingly expect
sustainable and nutritious
ingredients in their favorite
pet food choices. In both
human and pet food markets,
vegetarian and vegan options
remain relatively small but
are growing rapidly. Beyond
the vegan market, there
is also a rise in hybrid meat products,
which help advance the plant-based
revolution. Transitioning from meatbased
to more plant-based diets presents
many challenges. Let’s discuss some of
these challenges and explore potential
ingredient solutions.
Taste
It’s well-known that dogs, and especially
cats, love the taste of meat. Introducing
more plant-based proteins will inevitably
affect the taste of the final product.
However, for every challenge, there is a
solution. Various ingredients can provide
an umami taste or enhance flavour. Yeast is
a prime example. Different yeast extracts
offer a range of taste experiences, from
various umami flavors to roasty notes.
Nutrition
It is crucial to maintain the same
nutritional value of the pet diet when
incorporating more plant-based proteins.
A mixture of various plant proteins is
essential to ensure all amino acids are
included. One effective combination is
pea and rice. However, there is much
more to explore. Including yeast proteins
can supplement B-vitamins and boost
palatability. Have you considered insect
protein? Insect proteins are a nutritious
alternative with an excellent amino acid
profile, and significantly reduces your pet
food environmental footprint.
Color
The selection of ingredients will naturally
affect the final product’s colour. Adding
more vegetables to the recipe can
contribute to a more sustainable and
natural healthy appearance, such as using
carrots and whole peas. However, for
kibbles and some wet foods, achieving the
desired colour can be more challenging.
Barentz can assist you in selecting the
right shade of brown, from light to dark,
using natural ingredients like cooked
apples and malt extract.
Structure
The structure and texture of pet food
changes when incorporating more plantbased
or alternative proteins. While the
relevance of this change for dogs might
be debatable, it’s important to keep pet
parents satisfied by making the product
resemble meat, especially in wet pet food.
By using a range of different binders and
fibers, you can achieve a texture very
close to meat. Finding the right synergy,
in combination with other functional
ingredients, is key. We have the expertise
to help you achieve this.
Select Your Ingredients and
Create Value
Ingredient selection is key in finding
the best solutions for the plant-based
revolution. By selecting the right
ingredients, you can add significant value
to your product. Barentz offers a range of
plant-based, insect, and yeast proteins.
Additionally, we have the expertise to
combine these proteins with binders and
fibers to mimic meat-based pet food. Our
know-how extends to creating value for
your pet food products. Our technical

70 years of Innovation - Leiber
Celebrates its Anniversary
Unique in the world: hundreds of healthy products from a single raw material
Leiber celebrates its anniversary with over 200 partners, friends and employees
70 years of sustainable upcycling of brewers’ yeast
When Franz Leiber founded the company
that now bears his name on 6 March 1954,
the word upcycling didn't yet exist. The
founder's basic idea of obtaining valuable
extracts from secondary beer brewing
streams was also innovative. Leiber is
now a globally networked specialist for
brewers' yeast, and develops ingredients
for biotechnology, the food industry,
animal nutrition and agriculture in its own
laboratories. To accomplish this, over 200
employees in Bramsche work together
with around 65 partners worldwide
to refine brewers' yeast, thus making
Leiber GmbH, which has developed
from Bierhefeverarbeitungsgesellschaft
Franz Leiber & Co over the past 70 years,
a highly-specialized market leader. Ian
Healey was invited to find out more at a
very special event.
“What do bodybuilders, vegans, wine
lovers, farmed salmon, dairy cows and
riding horses all over the world have in
common? They all love Leiber products,”
said Managing Director Bernd Schmidt-
Ankum on the occasion of the company's
birthday. Leiber GmbH from Bramsche-
Engter in Germany has been refining
yeast from beer production for 70 years
now. A single raw material is turned into
hundreds of products for biotechnology,
livestock and pet food, food supplements
and food. The grandson of founder Franz
Leiber emphasized that this unique
success story would not be possible
without the many excellent minds and
hands. “We have retained a start-up
mentality over seven decades, which
makes me very proud. The ultra-modern
building, our new campus, where we are
guests today, represents precisely this
creativity and innovative strength. We will
develop many more ideas here.”
The new light-flooded headquarters not
only houses offices, but also research and
development as well as a test kitchen.
More than 200 business partners and
friends were able to admire the uniquely
sustainable Leiber Campus for the first
time at the official anniversary reception
and taste some of the products live on
site. “What our colleagues produce here
every day from just one raw material you
can almost call ‘magic’,” related Leiber
Managing Director Gilbert Klausmeyer,
sharing his enthusiasm. The variety
ranges from preparations from large
German drugstore chains to strengthen
the immune system to Britain's favorite
spread. Simone Erb, Eike Meyer-Wetjen
and Dr. Holger Kühlwein reported that
there is no end in sight with a brief insight
into current developments in the areas of
nutraceuticals (food supplements), food
and aquaculture.
"Give Yeast a Second Life"
Innovation is the company's DNA. In
cooperation with diverse customers,
new products are constantly being
developed in the company’s internal
Research and Development department.
Its laboratories are an important element
of the new Leiber Campus which was
inaugurated in 2023.
"With the Leiber Campus, we want, firstly,
to offer our staff a good place to work
and meet up and, secondly, to invest in
Leiber's successful future at the Bramsche
site", continued Gilbert Klausmeyer.
Such an anniversary lends an opportunity
to look back and take stock. This was

Franz Leiber founded the company in March 1954
at global market level on a pane of glass
– followed live by the eyes of the guests,
who watched intently as one milestone
artistically passed into the next - from the
founding of the company in 1954 to the
construction of the new campus last year.
Historical flashback
In 1954, Franz Leiber founded the
“Bierhefeverarbeitungsgesellschaft Franz
Leiber & Co” in Damme. His family had
been running an agricultural trading
business since 1798, so he was born
into the agricultural and food industry.
Leiber's innovative and sustainable idea:
to make the vitamin B complex from
brewers’ yeast, which at the time was
still little researched, usable for animal
husbandry. The breakthrough came ten
years later. Through his own research
and development, Leiber had developed
a process with which the brewers’ yeast
could be dried while at the same time
preserving the valuable and healthy
ingredients.
In 1994, the new plant in Bramsche was
put into operation, a Polish subsidiary was
founded in 2003 and a Russian subsidiary
in 2009. In 2024, Leiber takes over the
Spanish company Aplicaciones Biológica
a la Nutrición S.L. (ABN).
Today, the main site in Bramsche-Engter is
home to a state-of-the-art extraction plant
with three drying spray towers, a spacious
campus, well-equipped laboratories
and a modern high-bay warehouse. In
addition to all economic development,
the company has always focused on
sustainability: in 2024, its own biomass
power plant was put into operation
to reduce CO2 emissions. This covers
around 80 percent of the site's energy
consumption. Leiber aims to achieve
completely climate-neutral production
by 2030. The down-to-earth and inventive
spirit of the founder continues to have an
impact today. “We are proud of our past,
but look forward to the future. There are
plenty of plans!” says Bernd Schmidt-
Ankum.

Fatty Acids for Animals: A Key
Element of Animal Nutrition
by Aurore Berthereau, New Project Manager at Vidya Euroe
Fatty acids are essential lipid compounds
that play a fundamental role in animal
nutrition. They participate in vital
biological functions, such as energy
production, maintenance of cellular
membrane integrity, and regulation of
inflammatory processes [1]. For animal
feed producers, selecting the best sources
of fatty acids is crucial to optimize animal
health and the quality of derived products.
This article examines the significance
of fatty acids in animal nutrition, with
examples such as hemp and chia oils,
available in the Vidya Europe catalog.
Fatty Acids: Essential nutrients
for animal health
Fatty acids are categorized into
several groups, including saturated,
monounsaturated, and polyunsaturated
fatty acids. Among these, omega-3 and
omega-6 fatty acids are particularly
important as they cannot be synthesized
by the animal's body and must therefore
be supplied through the diet [2].
Functions of fatty acids in
animals
Fatty acids serve several essential
biological functions:
- Energy Source: Fatty acids
represent a concentrated energy
reserve, crucial for growing animals,
pregnant females, and production
animals.
- Cellular Structure Maintenance:
Fatty acids are major constituents of
cellular membranes, ensuring the fluidity
and permeability necessary for cellular
exchanges.
- Inflammatory and Immune
Regulation: Omega-3 and omega-6 fatty
acids regulate inflammatory processes
and support immune function. A proper
balance between these fatty acids is vital
to prevent excessive inflammation.
Focus on the role of Omega-3
and Omega-6 in animal health
Omega-3 and omega-6 are two types
of polyunsaturated fatty acids that play
distinct but complementary roles in
the body. An equitable intake of these
two families is essential for maintaining
overall animal health [3].
- Omega-3 (ALA, EPA, DHA): These
fatty acids are essential for reducing
inflammation, protecting cardiovascular
health, and ensuring the proper
functioning of the central nervous
system. In animals, omega-3 fatty acids
also promote cognitive health, enhance
coat shine, and improve regulation of
inflammatory processes, particularly in
joint pathologies [4].
- Omega-6 (LA, GLA): Omega-6 fatty
acids are necessary for growth, tissue
development, and proper immune
function. However, an excess of omega-6
without adequate omega-3 intake
can lead to excessive inflammation,
underscoring the importance of
maintaining a balanced ratio [2].

to eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) and
docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) plays a
crucial role in supporting cognitive
function, cardiovascular health, and
reducing chronic inflammation [1].
- Gamma-Linolenic Acid (GLA) (2-
6%): Particularly valued for its antiinflammatory
properties, GLA helps
regulate immune responses and alleviates
skin conditions such as atopic dermatitis
in companion animals (dogs and cats) [2].

richness in essential fatty acids,
especially omega-3 and omega-6. These
fatty acids play a fundamental role in
various biological processes and are
indispensable for the health and wellbeing
of animals, as they cannot be
synthesized by their bodies.
Rich in omega-3 and omega-6 fatty
acids in ideal proportions, hemp oil
is particularly beneficial for dogs and
cats. It improves skin and coat health,
strengthens the immune system,
reduces inflammation, and helps
prevent joint and digestive issues.
Chia oil, rich in omega-3, is utilized in
animal nutrition to promote heart health
and reduce inflammation. In ruminants
and companion animals, it also helps
improve coat quality and supports joint
health [5].
Hemp oil
Hemp oil (Cannabis sativa) is a
concentrated source of polyunsaturated
fatty acids, with an optimal ratio
of omega-6 (linoleic acid, LA) to
omega-3 (alpha-linolenic acid, ALA) of
approximately 3:1, considered the ideal
balance for animal nutrition [3].
Here are the main bioactive components
of hemp oil and their benefits for animals:
- Linoleic Acid (LA) (50-60%) –
Omega-6: This fatty acid is essential for
skin health, maintaining the skin barrier,
and regulating inflammatory responses.
In animals, adequate omega-6 intake
supports wound healing and reduces
inflammation [7].
- Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) (15-
25%) – Omega-3: This omega-3 precursor
Hemp oil, due to its balanced composition
of omega-3 and omega-6,
promotes good skin health, enhances
digestion, and strengthens the immune
system of animals. It is also beneficial for
joint health, particularly in older animals
or those suffering from arthritis, owing to
its anti-inflammatory effects [4].
Chia oil
Chia oil (Salvia hispanica) is one of the
richest plant sources of omega-3. Here are
the main bioactive components of chia
oil:
- Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) (60-
65%) – Omega-3: Chia oil is extremely
rich in ALA, an omega-3 that supports
cardiovascular health and reduces
inflammation. ALA is metabolized into
EPA and DHA, two fatty acids essential for
the proper functioning of the brain, eyes,
and nervous system in animals [2].
- Linoleic Acid (LA) (18-23%) –
Omega-6: Similar to hemp oil, linoleic acid

is essential for skin and coat health, as well
as regulating inflammatory processes [3].
The richness of ALA in chia oil makes
it a particularly suitable supplement
for animals experiencing omega-3
deficiencies, such as companion animals
and ruminants. Omega-3 fatty acids are
also known to support joint function
and enhance mobility, especially in older
horses or dogs [4].
Benefits of hemp and chia oils
for animals
- Skin and Coat Health: The omega-3
and omega-6 fatty acids present in hemp
and chia oils contribute to maintaining
the skin barrier, reducing skin
inflammation, and improving the shine
and density of the coat. These oils are
particularly recommended for animals
suffering from dermatitis, allergies, or dry
skin [2].
- Immune Support: The gammalinolenic
acid (GLA) in hemp oil helps
regulate immune responses and
alleviate symptoms associated with
chronic inflammatory diseases. ALA and
EPA, found in chia oil, also bolster the
immune system by reducing excessive
inflammation [1][3].
- Joint Health: The anti-inflammatory
properties of omega-3 fatty acids, notably
ALA and GLA, are beneficial for animals
suffering from joint pain or arthritis.
Chia oil is particularly recommended for
enhancing mobility and reducing pain in
older animals [2].
- Cognitive and Cardiovascular
Health: Omega-3 fatty acids are essential
for the proper functioning of the brain
and cardiovascular system. In animals,
they promote mental health, help
prevent heart disease, and improve blood
circulation [6].
- Digestive Function: Essential fatty
acids promote better digestion and
nutrient absorption. For instance, hemp
oil helps reduce inflammation in the
gastrointestinal tract, thereby improving
the digestive well-being of animals [5].
Conclusion
Fatty acids, particularly those derived
from plant sources like hemp oil and chia
oil, are indispensable for the health and
performance of animals. Hemp and chia
oils are natural sources of essential fatty
acids, particularly rich in omega-3 and
omega-6, providing numerous health
benefits for animals. Their inclusion in
diets contributes not only to enhancing
skin, coat, and joint health but also to
supporting immune function, cognitive
performance, and cardiovascular health.
Vidya Europe, by offering these highquality
vegetable oils, meets the specific
nutritional needs of animals while
ensuring optimal traceability and safety
through its rigorous certifications.

owners have purchased biotics at least
once a year because of a professional
recommendation. In many cases,
they use biotics to support their pet’s
digestive or gastrointestinal concerns 2 .
“The popularity of functional ingredients
has increased as pet owners seek ways
to improve the health and wellness of
their pets, yet limited research has been
conducted regarding the use of probiotics
and postbiotics and their effects on
canine health,” said Sophie Nixon, Ph.D.,
Head of Clinical Research for Pet & Animal
Well-being at ADM, who oversaw the trial.
For this exploratory
study, 18 adult beagles
and 18 adult English
pointers were used in
a 3-arm randomized,
placebo-controlled, parallel
group design, with
12 animals per group.
Following a 60-day
adaptation period in
which dogs were fed
a standard diet alone,
the dogs were then
supplemented with
either probiotic or
postbiotic BPL1 or
an identical placebo
alongside their
standard diet for 90
days. Measurements
were taken to assess
outcome measures
relating to a variety of
health areas, including
fecal fermentative
end products and
microbiome, insulin
sensitivity, serum gut
hormones, oxidative
stress, inflammatory
biomarkers and
white blood cell gene
expression.
Improvements were observed in fecal
short-chain fatty acids, as well as
changes in microbiome composition
and the functional metagenome, when
compared to placebo control. Data from
the trial shows that both the live and
heat-treated forms of BPL1 can safely be
supplemented in healthy adult dogs and
support several aspects of gut health. A
further clinical study is ongoing to assess
additional physiological outcomes, with
a focus on metabolic health.
“Groundbreaking science such as this
canine trial spurs development of
ADM’s functional ingredients across
human, pet and animal nutrition,” said
Mark Lotsch, ADM’s President of Global
Health & Wellness. “Beneficial outcomes
and ingredient stability of our awardwinning
BPL1 solution have been
repeatedly demonstrated in previous
human clinical trials. We are thrilled to
also see promising results for pet health
applications.”
Because heat-treated BPL1 has a
similar effect to live BPL1 in healthy
adult dogs, pet product formulators
will have greater flexibility through the
manufacturing and supply process, as
they don’t need to make adaptations for
living microorganisms 3 . Notably, extreme
heat from extrusion and baking common
in pet food processing can diminish the
efficacy of live probiotics. As inanimate
microorganisms, postbiotics can confer a
health benefit on the host despite these
challenging conditions.

New Study shows that Fungal
Protein is Highly Digestible for
Dogs and improves their Gut
Health
As consumers increasingly prioritize sustainable, natural ingredients in pet food, a new study reveals that
Finnish biotech company Enifer's mycoprotein PEKILO®Pet enhances dog health by boosting gut microbiome
diversity and increasing the production of short-chain fatty acids.
The study by the Research Laboratory
in Canine Nutrition (LENUCAN) at the
Federal University of Parana (UFPR) in
Brazil has found that Enifer’s PEKILO®Pet
mycoprotein ingredient enhances dog
health by increasing the prevalence of
potentially probiotic bacterial genera and
decreasing the prevalence of bacterial
genera associated with certain cancers, as
well as increasing the production of shortchain
fatty acids (SFCAs).
The study also found that diets containing
20% PEKILO®Pet had a high protein
digestibility of 83.9%, highlighting the
potential of this upcycled mycoprotein as
a sustainable and nutrient-rich ingredient
for pet food.
The 42-day study of 16 one-year-old
beagles (eight male, eight female), with an
average weight of 10.43kg and inclusion
rates of 4, 8, 12, 16, and 20 percent, found
statistically significant increases in gut
microbiome diversity with PEKILO®Pet
inclusion in their diet. Even using the
smallest inclusion rate (4%), PEKILO®Pet
increased the health-beneficial microbes
in the dog’s gut and decreased harmful
bacteria.
Previous research shows that the gut
plays an important role in animal health.
In particular, the microbiome in the gut
is known to affect both the absorption
and metabolism of nutrients and the
dog’s protective functions. Probiotics
have beneficial effects on pets, such as
modulating the immune system, helping
to reduce stress, protecting against
pathogenic bacteria, and supporting
healthy growth.
“Our findings confirm that even at low
inclusion levels, PEKILO®Pet enhances
beneficial gut bacteria while reducing
harmful ones, which could have farreaching
health benefits for dogs, from
improved digestion to enhanced immune
function,” says Heikki Keskitalo, Business
Development Manager and co-founder
of Enifer.
Additionally, the study found statistically
significant increases in the production
of short-chain fatty acids (SFCAs) and
branched short-chain fatty acids (BFCAs),
with increasing PEKILO®Pet inclusion
in the diet – with previous research
highlighting the benefit of SFCAs to
dogs. Also, including PEKILO®Pet did not
change the dogs’ fecal quality, with a dry
matter of 29.7% and a score of 3.9%, with
no significant changes in Score, pH, or
ammonia content.
Finally, no significant differences were
found in the palatability of reference diets
and the diets containing 4%, 8%, or 16%
PEKILO®Pet protein, meaning the dogs
were very happy to consume PEKILO®Pet.
“These results are incredibly exciting
for the future of sustainable pet food.
Our PEKILO®Pet mycoprotein not only
addresses the growing demand for
natural and environmentally friendly
ingredients but also significantly boosts
the gut health in dogs and is well digested,
making it a win-win for pet health and the
planet,” continues Keskitalo.
The study’s findings are significant, as dog
owners are increasingly drawn to pet diets
that reflect their own personal values

and lifestyle choices, which is leading to
a surge in alternative approaches to pet
food as concerns about the sustainability
of animal protein ingredients grow.
Consumers are increasingly looking for
pet food that contains natural and easyto-understand
ingredients and fewer
cereal grains and high-carbohydrate
ingredients, which have been linked to
chronic systemic inflammation in dogs
and can lead to a range of degenerative
disease states, including cancer.
PEKILO®Pet addresses this demand as a
high-protein ingredient containing 60%
protein and 22% fiber (including large
amounts of beta-glucan – a functional
fiber with a wide range of health benefits
for dogs) and smaller amounts of fat,
minerals, and vitamins.
PLANT
EXTRACTS
FOR PETS
• Turmeric
• Capsicum
• Rosemary
• Black pepper
• And more...
PEKILO®Pet is also hypoallergenic and
rich in spermidine, a polyamine that is
particularly beneficial for aging dogs, as
polyamine levels naturally decline with
age. Spermidine helps maintain gut
health, making it an essential supplement
for older pets.
Produced through fermentation and
upcycling industrial side streams,
PEKILO®Pet requires minimal land and
water, making it a sustainable alternative
to traditional pet food ingredients. Its
production process results in up to
90% lower greenhouse gas emissions
compared to imported soya.

MicroHarvest and VEGDOG launch dog
treat with first-of-its-kind microbial
protein ingredient
• Novel protein ingredient emits an
estimated 2-3x less CO2 eq/kg compared
to plant-derived solutions
• Study conducted by MicroHarvest
in partnership with a Wageningen
University Masters program finds that
78.4% of British and German dog owners
would consider buying pet food products
containing microbial protein
German biotech startup MicroHarvest
have teamed up with animal-free pet food
producer VEGDOG to unveil first-of-itskind
microbial protein dog treat. In an era
where sustainability and nutrition must
go hand in hand, the company is leading
the way in microbial protein production
for the pet food industry.
to conduct the first acceptance study for
microbial protein amongst dog owners
in the UK and Germany, countries that
represent two of the largest premium dog
food and treats markets in Europe.
The study surveyed 1,162 UK and German
dog owners and found significant interest,
with 77.2% of respondents willing to
purchase dog treats containing microbial
protein in their composition and 78.4% of
the dog owners willing to buy complete
dog food containing the protein.
Although other innovative pet food
products have explored microbial sources
like yeasts and mycelium as ingredients,
this specific product is the first to be
designed with microbial protein derived
from bacteria that have been part of our
diets for centuries in foods like kimchi,
kefir and sauerkraut.

The innovative VEGDOG Pure Bites snack,
which is a first for the dog food market
in Europe, combines the new microbial
protein from MicroHarvest with tasty
potato and apple pomace. Thanks to its
hypoallergenic properties, it is particularly
suitable for dogs that cannot tolerate
conventional protein sources. The high
tolerance and digestibility as well as the
delicious taste make it the first choice
for dogs with severe intolerances and
allergies. This also makes VEGDOG Pure
Bites interesting for use in veterinary
practice.
Microbial protein is protein sourced
from micro-organisms like bacteria
and produced through fermentation.
MicroHarvest's microbial ingredient
footprint, at 1.4 kg CO2 equivalent per
kilogram of product, offers a sustainability
edge equal to insect proteins and
significantly surpassing that of plantderived
proteins.

offering a highly scalable and consistent
protein solution.
Ally Motta, Animal Nutritionist and
Application Specialist at MicroHarvest
commented: ‘’Testing has confirmed
that our protein ingredient has a
stable nutritional profile containing
all the essential amino acids for dogs.
Furthermore, in a live palatability study,
we found that the treats containing
our ingredient were enthusiastically
accepted by 85% of dogs trialed, while
treats containing solely poultry meal
had a 75% acceptance rate. This confirms
the viability of MicroHarvest protein as a
rewarding and nutritious treat for dogs.”

A subsequent palatability study carried
out by MicroHarvest found that dogs
showed a ten percentage points higher
acceptance rate of microbial protein treats
compared to those made exclusively with
poultry.
MicroHarvest co-founder Katelijne Bekers
explains: “Our partnership with VEGDOG,
coupled with the results of our consumer
research, demonstrates the potential
for microbial ingredients like ours to
offer competitive protein alternatives
to the pet food industry. Sustainability
is becoming increasingly important
for pet food shoppers. Still, there are
other purchase drivers to consider, like
palatability, digestibility, as well as specific
nutritional benefits, like low-fat content;
these are all benefits that our protein
over-delivers on. With increasing pressure
on the supply chain of animal-derived
protein ingredients, our solution is a great
way to differentiate the protein source
choice for pet food manufacturers, being
both highly reliable and scalable”.
VEGDOG founder & CEO, Tessa Zaune-
Figlar: “Our goal at VEGDOG is to show
dog owners that they do not have to
rely on meat-based products to feed
their pets. With this modern approach
and our high-quality, healthy and tasty
products, we have been able to pioneer
a new market. By collaborating with our
partner MicroHarvest, we are opening
a new chapter and bringing to market a
promising snack that demonstrates our
ability to innovate.”
Dr. Carla Steffen, head of R&D at VEGDOG,
further explains: “At VEGDOG, we are
constantly searching for innovative
protein sources that benefit our dogs as
well as our planet. It is of high importance
to us to formulate our products based
on scientific evidence. As the microbial
protein of MicroHarvest is proven to
be highly digestible, palatable and
sustainable, it ticks all of these boxes.”
With a global protein demand forecast to
grow 50% by 2050, by applying modern
technology to millennia-old fermentation
techniques, MicroHarvest is capable of
producing tons of high-quality microbial
protein ingredients in just 24 hours,
MicroHarvest’s microbial protein is
compliant with European regulatory
standards, GMP+ certified, ensuring
adherence to the rigorous safety,
sustainability, and nutritional guidelines.
A scalable production ensures a steady
and reliable supply of high-quality
ingredients, empowering customers to
stay ahead in a competitive landscape.
Plus, the in-house team of formulation
experts is equipped to guarantee tailored
support.
Aside from the pet food industry,
MicroHarvest is developing applications
for their microbial proteins in livestock and
aquaculture feed with a view to eventually
extending their product offering to
tailored solutions for the human food
market. The highest quality ingredients
mean that final products are not just
market-ready but poised to set new
standards in nutrition and sustainability
for pets and other consumers.

Would you Share your Dog´s
Dinner?
In the UK "human-grade" doesn´t mean pet food is safe for people to eat, but made using ingredients that are classed as fit for human
consumption
Not all human foods are safe for dogs
and cats to eat. But what about the other
way around? Looking beyond the disgust
factor, would you ever chow on your cat’s
kibble or slurp on a gravy-loaded doggie
dish?
With over 50 pieces of applicable
legislation governing the manufacturing
of pet food in the UK, Fortress Technology
examines the connection between the
humanization of pets and how this
is driving higher demand for quality,
nutritious ‘human-grade’ pet food.
In 2024, it was estimated that over 17.2
million UK households owned at least
one of 36 million pets . From providing
companionship and support therapy to
outdoor adventures, our furry friends are
now considered central to the household
and on par with any family member. So
much so, that 21% of British householders
admitted to spending the same amount
on pet food than they do on their own
groceries, if not more .
Food is served
‘Human grade’ is a term coined in
America. There, the Association of
American Feed Control Officials
(AAFCO) defines it as ‘pet food
manufactured in a manner consistent
with regulations for ready-to-eat
human food products’. It means
something different in the UK.
“Regardless of how tasty-looking any
pet food is, if it was produced in a
pet food processing factory it cannot
be legally classed as human grade in
the UK,” highlights Phil Brown, Sales
Director at Fortress Technology Europe.
“Instead, the UK term relates to
ingredients from human grade
sources. Which means that any meats
used in pet food products must not
be dead, dying or diseased. Instead,
the meat must come from animals
that are passed as being fit for human
consumption. Nevertheless, the
increasing pressure from consumers
to ensure their cuddly companions
receive safe, nutritious, high-quality
food has encouraged tighter pet food
processing regulations in recent years,
he goes on to say.”
According to the Association UK Pet
Food, over 50 pieces of legislation
govern the manufacturing of pet
food in the UK to ensure consistent
high standards and utmost safety and
hygiene. The Guide to Good Practice
for the Manufacture of Safe Pet Food
developed by FEDIAF comprehensively
covers the safety and hygiene of pet
food processes and products. In 2021,
updated FEDIAF Nutritional Guidelines
for Complete and Complementary Pet
Food for Cats and Dogs were released.
Like human food, pet food processors
are required to adopt a HACCP and
formal foreign bodies control policy.
With more canine and feline mouths to
feed, robust pet food safety and detailoriented
inspection has never been
more paramount.

PROCESSING
“Industry trends prove that owners are
demanding more from manufacturers
when it comes to pet food meeting similar
standards to human food, ensuring that
it is safe, nutritious and follows rigorous
quality control processes using highperformance
inspection machinery.
Sensitive and hygienic contaminant
detection equipment can play a crucial
role in assisting pet food processors to
protect pets, safeguard their brand and
adhere to these stringent regulations,”
Phil Brown explains.
Un-leashing new technology
On a typical pet food production line,
incoming raw ingredients may be
checked, measured, blended with other
ingredients, cooked, moulded, packaged
into a final product, inspected, stored
and transported. Where in-line inspection
should be implemented is dependent
on the biggest contaminant risks for
that specific facility. Processors should
establish Critical Control Points (CCPs) to
prevent, eliminate or reduce contaminant
risks to acceptable levels.
To supply most pet food retailers, processors are required to inspect products at the end of the
line by metal detection or X-ray.
Until recently, pet food processors might
have installed magnetic separators to
remove ferrous metals, particularly at the
first phase of processing. Now, state-ofthe-art
metal detectors are often installed
on pet food production lines to optimize

PROCESSING
Inspecting wet products can present a number of challenges to pet food processors
the inspection process, minimize waste
and efficiently remove contaminated wet
and dry pet food products.
Pipeline for premium slurries
Inspecting wet products e.g., gravystyle
foods, can present a number of
challenges to pet food processors.
Water, like metal, can be conductive.
This means that wet products will react
in different ways in the magnetic field
of a metal detector, which can lead to
false readings and consequently higher
product waste. In comparison, dry
kibble has a much lower product effect.
To overcome this, Fortress Technology’s
Pipeline Metal Detector applies powerful
digital signal processing technology to
clearly distinguish the signal generated
by a metal contaminant from the wet
product being inspected.
This type of pet food processing
demands the highest levels of sanitation.
Hygienic metal detector pipeline
systems for wet pet slurries and pâtéstyle
foods are utilized to prevent metal
contaminants reaching the cooking and
packing stage.
To avoid cross-contamination and
biological hazards, pipeline metal
detector scanning tubes should be
constructed in such a way to eliminate any
bacteria harboring cracks where materials
meet. Should pet food processors need
to detect other physical contaminants,
for example glass or bone, Pipeline X-ray
machines may be an option.
Best for biscuit buddies
For dry kibble and pet treat applications,
Gravity Metal Detectors can be installed
upstream to detect contaminants
earlier in the production line. Phil Brown
elaborates, “There is always value to be
gained from adding upstream detection
systems to most processes. Upstream
detection often makes it easier to detect
contaminants, trace to their source and
alert staff to potential equipment issues
before they become too challenging and
potentially trigger huge recalls.”
Catching a metal contaminant in its
largest form at the start of the processing
line, for example in a pipeline or gravity
system, means lower costs associated
with the rejection.

Inspecting products after packaging using
an end-of-line conveyor metal detection
and/or X-ray system is the most important
CCP. For most retailers, it is a supplier
requirement. Bulk metal detectors,
checkweighers and combination systems
may be deployed to perform this final
quality check, inspecting large pet food
bags and boxed wet food trays.
Current technology now accommodates
both the premiumization of pet food and
its effects on processing productivity.
Manufacturers can utilize this machinery
to generate live OOE reporting data.
Safer Pet Food Promise
“High quality pet food deserves high
quality inspection systems. Determining
CCPs and preventive controls is an
important part of meeting current
consumer demands. A comprehensive
understanding of consumer trends and
how they affect food safety regulations
can without doubt transform the
efficiency of pet food processing lines,”
states Brown.
By adopting an efficient and systematic
approach to manufacturing pet food,
owners can feel assured that their
pet’s dinner has undergone thorough
contamination detection. No matter the
ingredients or application format, it is
essential that pet food production lines
align to the same authenticity, safety,
wellbeing and care associated with animal
ownership.

high quality and have a long shelf life. Their
solutions are highly energy efficient and fully
electric. In addition, they are easy to install and
maintain, offering maximum reliability with
few moving parts.
SAIREM's MW and RF
technology is 100% electric Pet food safety
and therefore produces With the growth of worldwide pet ownership,
no CO2 emissions and Sairem's innovative MW and RF systems have
consumes 50% less energy taken center stage. One popular application
compared to traditional is the gentle defrosting of frozen pet food
heat treatment processes. components such as beef - including liver,
spleen, rumen, etc. - or poultry. These can be
brought to the required temperature for further processing in a
very short time using microwaves. Compared to other methods,
there is no drip loss, and product safety is increased by reducing
bacterial growth.
As industry searches for alternative protein sources, insects such
as mealworms or crickets are increasingly coming into focus:
they are easy to breed and have high protein content. For further
processing, however, they must be dried uniformly. Conventional
methods are ill equipped to deal with this challenge as they
are time-consuming, energy-intensive and lead to quality
losses. With Sairem’s MW
technology, this process can
be carried out in just one step,
leading to homogeneous results.
The insects do not dry out: color,
texture, and volume are preserved, and
their specific proteins and oil content are
retained.

PACKAGING
Handling Your Success -
Together We Are Stronger!
by Ian Healey, Editor-in-Chief at Dr. Harnisch Publications
When it comes to packaging and transportation, it makes sense to work with
the best possible partner. For pet food the Italian company Clevertech is at the
forefront of both secondary and final packaging. Part of the Petfood Competence
Network, the company is based in Reggio Emilia, the heart of the Italian food
processing belt. Clevertech is a company capable of producing a complete line as
a single supplier or managing a project whilst taking care of integration aspects.
Marketing Manager Luca Carollo met up with Ian Healey and took the time to give
PetFood PRO some insights into the importance of materials handling and the
necessity of a good partner.
Hi Luca, thanks for the
welcome. Can you give us some
background to Clevertech?
Luca Carollo: Since its launch and
establishment in 1987, the Clevertech
Group is headquartered at Cadelbosco
di Sopra, in the Reggio Emilia province
in northern Italy, and is supported
globally by other operations in North
America, China, France, UK, and South
Asia. Clevertech is a family-owned
company whose experience makes it an
ideal partner for the design of integrated
solutions for front and end of line, with a
range of solutions that covers the food &
beverage, home care, wine & spirits, pet
food and personal-care markets, where
it meets the requirements of all major
manufacturers of consumer goods.
The systems developed by the Clevertech
Group can manage a broad range of
packaging concepts, including PET
bottles, pouches, bulk cans, ends, cases,
and secondary packaging. Most pet food
is packaged in pouches and cans.
How long have you been with
Clevertech and what is your
role?
I have a double role within Sales at
Clevertech. I’m responsible for Europe
and East Europe Sales and at the same
time I am in charge of the business
development of the company. Actually we
have a clear view about how to grow and
where to move forward business-wise;
opportunities are there and I strongly
believe that, together with Clevertech,
manufacturers can build up new and long
lasting partnerships.
Since 2002 I have worked in the packaging
business. In October 2017 I joined
Clevertech and I fully believe in familyowned
Italian companies. There is an easy
direct approach to the Reggiani Family
and a shared understanding about how
to collaborate, which was the other added
value to begin the partnership together.
I was impressed with the huge portfolio
of machine-solutions present technically
in the company. I had seen also an
impressive rate of repeated business with
multinational companies, often known in
the market as highly demanding. To me
this was a clear indication that Clevertech
is structured enough to catch these and
many other similar opportunities in the
market.
What is unique about
Clevertech's packaging
solutions?
Clevertech’s mission is to design the
future through integration. We offer our
customers the best project management
tools in order to provide solutions
which meet the needs of an ever-more
competitive and demanding market.
Our target is to ensure high standards, in
terms of quality, reliability and security
of our systems. This has always been
our approach, developed over the years
thanks to important partnership with
multinational and leading companies.
Clevertech has met the expectations of
the worldwide market, enabling it to
rapidly become a leading company in the
sector. Our exports have, indeed, reached
95% of our total turnover of around 150
million Euros, thanks to the support of our
Luca Carolo, Marketing Manager at Clevertech, Italy
over 500 employees and 75 contractors
who work at our 36.000 m2 premises in
Italy's packaging valley.
One of Clevertech's main goals involves
offering the best on-site technical
support during both the sales and aftersales
phase. To meet this goal, Clevertech
became a global supplier for its customers
all around the world by opening new
foreign locations and production sites.
Clevertech designs, manufactures and
markets engineered front-line and endof-line
solutions. The company has proved
itself to be more than just a manufacturer
of machinery: the company's impressive
growth is due to our proactive approach
to customer service, offering complete
solutions for industry. Clevertech
supplies a complete range of palletizing
and depalletizing systems designed
to satisfy the most demanding market
requirements in terms of productivity and
product specifications.
Clevertech offers packaging
solutions for various industrial
sectors. Can you give me an
example for pet food?
One good example was a request from a
multi-national company, a leader in the
pet food sector from whom we received
the purchase order. The global solution
composed: an unloading system, robotic
palletizers fully integrated with stretch
wrapping machines, as well as labelling
machines and depalletizing systems
for pouches. Basically, the customer
was previously producing mainly can
30

packaging. In order to answer the market
demand, he invested in pouch lines with
a completely new building specifically
dedicated for this new production.
The solution provided by Clevertech is
the biggest project in the Pet Food sector
which was designed and provided in a
strong collaboration with our partners
CAMA Group. The system supplied was for
packaging lines for all pouch dimensions
products (50gr & 85gr & 100gr). In this
way, the customer was able to get mixed
products in a different kind of packaging.
Clevertech designed and developed a
specific unloading system with 4 outfeed
lines in order to empty the plastic trays,
(after retorting), and to feed the cartoning
machine with pouches from CAMA.
This system, equipped with 4 axis robots
allowed to mix up to 4 flavors per pack.
The second system developed, (EOL)
was a robotic palletizer integrated with
a stretch wrapping machine (Model PF
30) with pallet conveying and labelling
machine for temporary products.
The third machine was a depalletizing
system for temporary products with
4 outfeed lines in order to depalletize
the layers of temporary products and
feed a CAMA case packer machine. This
equipment is able to mix up to 4 semifinished
products per final packaging. The
last system developed is a fully integrated
system for finished products, composed
of a robotic palletizing system with a
Clevertech Group Headquarters in Cadelbosco di Sopra, Reggio Emilia, northern Italy
stretch wrapping machine (Model PF 80)
and labelling machine for finished pallets.
How important is the
environment and
sustainability?
Of course, Clevertech is aware of the
importance of environmental protection;
for this reason, we have had an internal
policy of sustainability and environmental
education in place for many years now.
A focus on recycling involves the whole
company on a daily basis, helping create
a shared eco-friendly lifestyle.
This patented system palletizes full cans for heat treatment in the autoclaves and then
depalletizes once the treatment has been completed. It uses the Clevertech Hybrid Sweep Off
equipment and works at very high speed.
In terms of our energy use, Clevertech is
now completely self-sufficient, thanks
to the installation of 432 solar panels
providing a peak output of 109 kWp. This
has allowed us to reduce our annual CO2
emissions by a total of 58,000 kg.
What projects are you planning
for the future?
Research and development have always
been at the heart of the company.
Clevertech’s goal is to develop
customized designs in accordance with
both specific customer requirements
and global safety specifications. For
this reason we have been investing in
innovative tools from the very beginning.
Clevertech boasts its own in-house software
department, offering flexibility and
reduced design times, and which also
performs staff training and continuous
research. This year, the company is inaugurating
a new plant in Italy, which
will take the total plant size up to 13,800
m2, and will provide a new logistic and
quality control area.
In June this year we held the first ever
two day seminar “Pet Food Tech Days at
Clevertech”. The feedback from customers
and partners was unanimously positive.
We will certainly repeat this project, in
co-operation with our colleagues in the
Petfood Competence Network.

PACKAGING
Clevertech has the capacity to realize complete systems for different formats, from pouches to can , split cups and alu trays. Systems and complete lines.
You mentioned multiflavor
packaging. What do you prefer?
Cans, pouches or another form
of packaging?
In order to answer this question, we
need to analyze the following aspects:
1. Capital Investment, 2. Space needed,
3. Automation required, 4. Labor required,
5. Comparative efficiency.
1. A multiflavor package for cans is 30%
more expensive than for pouches. The
reason is that product conveyors for cans
are larger in size to allow accumula-tion
between different machines that must
guarantee the continuity of production
in case of short stops, whereas conveyors
for pouches are almost non-existent.
Moreover, for cans there is one labelling
machine for each flavor, which pouches
Robotic depalletizing system for pouches, the machine feeds the carton machine and does the
multiflavored pack
do not need because they already have
an image that shows the flavor.
2. Space needed for cans is 40% larger
than required for pouches. We also have
to consider that multiflavor packaging for
cans always requires a period of quarantine
before the final packaging, whereas
for pouches the multiflavor packaging is
performed directly on the line.
3. Generally the automation required
is similar in both cases, but I would say
that for cans it is simpler and with higher
efficiencies than for pouches. In fact,
thanks to the high speed, we can have
1200-1600 cans per minute on a single line
also in the multiflavor packaging, while
for pouches the speed capacity is less
than half. Furthermore, the automation in
the world of multiflavor package for cans
is evolving, making it possible to handle
multiple products with different labels
even in labelling machines, thus reducing
the complexity of the line.
4. Multiflavor packaging for cans requires
more labor, as labelling machines and
packers require more operators than the
multiflavor packaging for pouches. There
are multiflavor lines for pouches with
4 flavors and 480 pouches per minute
32
Technology & Marketing
PACKAGING
where there is only 1 worker required,
whereas for cans “at least” 2 workers are
required.
5. The efficiencies of the multiflavor lines
for pouches are quite high, around 95%,
since the machines follow each other in
a harmonious way. In the cans sector,
the efficiencies are lower because the
machines work in a more individual way,
and they are connected only through
conveyors with accumulation foreseen.
If the downstream machine stops, the
rest of the line upstream continues to
work without stopping, filling up the
empty conveyor surface. At the restart
of the downstream machine, there will
be an acceleration of production that
will recover the accumulation created
upstream from the machine itself.
Have you seen other specific
trends?
Due to the pandemic, many businesses
were affected negatively and they needed
to rise again. During this tough time, some
companies realized that they needed to
invest more in the automation process,
as it might be a key element to fight the
Covid recession. Clevertech proposed
several solutions at this time.
Over the last 3 years, our company has
delivered several solutions for single flavor
and multiflavor pouch lines, with specific
innovation that cut the production
process to filling-treatment and direct
secondary-tertiary packaging, saving
costs, time and space normally required
by product quarantine, which has been
eliminated from the production process
of pouches.
How will the pet food market
develop? What is your vision for
the next few years?
Currently we are optimistic about the
future. The order book is full and there is a
lot of potential in pet food manufacturing,
especially in Eastern Europe, with some
green and brown field sites. Asia is
another growing market, with China and
India, especially, seeing an increase in pet
food. The food is often of a very high or
premium quality, since pets are often seen
as a status symbol.
In Europe the market for pouches will
grow, whereas in North America, more
cans are found.
Clevertech's vision is to continue with the
four pillars of our business philosophy:
Customization, A Holistic Approach,
Maximizing Performance, Showing a
Global Presence. We are living in exciting
and busy times.
Thanks for your time and
fascinating input. All the best
for the future.

LESS PACKAGING
JUST CLIP IT.
Efficient, sustainable and safe. Experience our full range
of clip-pak ® clip-closure solutions for many applications.
Which is yours?
The greatest ideas are often the simplest: a clip-pak ® is
a tubular bag, which is closed at either end with a clip -
essentially a sausage. Packaging with the clip is space-saving
and environmentally friendly; it achieves a high degree of
emptying and leaves little packaging waste. In fact, packaging
with less packaging material would scarcely be possible.

9 halls and 78,000 square meters of exhibition space
New hall 19 has been added to the exhibition layout, and a host of new
features is planned for the 2025 edition
Zoomark is ready to confirm its standing
as one of the world's leading pet industry
events. The 21st edition will be on from
5th to 7th May 2025 in BolognaFiere.
Though there are still several months
to go, 80% of stands have already been
booked, and registrations are still coming
in from all over the world.
"The anticipation is already building for
our forthcoming event: people in the
industry are greatly looking forward
to taking part in the show, having an
opportunity to gather and look to the
future together," commented Pascale
Sonvico, Zoomark's Show Office and
Sales Manager. "Indeed, after adding
hall 28, dedicated to the supply-chain
companies, we have just announced
another new hall, hall 19. Ideally located
to integrate seamlessly into our layout,
hall 19 is near of the main entrances of
BolognaFiere, Piazza Costituzione."
In total Zoomark 2025 will thus occupy
nine halls and cover an area of 78,000
square meters.
Thematic paths
Bigger and more functional too:
Zoomark’s new layout has in fact been
designed to help exhibitors and visitors
alike get the most out of the event, with
a more engaging, efficient floor plan
that will enhance the show experience
for all the industry professionals
coming to Bologna, as explained by
Luisa Bersanetti, Exhibition Manager of
Zoomark: "One of the new ideas we are
working on for the forthcoming event is
creating specific pathways dedicated to
the most interesting market trends, such
as sustainability, quality and innovation,
designed to optimise and streamline
the visitor’s experience and ensure that
exhibitors in all halls are guaranteed a
steady flow of traffic.
At the same time, we intend for these
themed routes to be a precious resource
for those looking for new opportunities
and ideas to make their business
stand out: they will guide retailers,
buyers, distributors and importers
to the companies and products on
show. We believe that this approach,
and the revamped layout, will help
further optimise the flow of visitors and
contribute to the event’s success."
The special areas
The 2025 edition of Zoomark features
five special themed areas, designed to
anticipate new trends and innovations in
the pet industry, with the aim of boosting
and facilitating business.
One of the new areas is Next 5.0, devoted
to pet-tech, a rapidly growing segment
which places technology and innovation
in the service of pets' well-being.
This area will host both start-ups and
established firms, ready to present the
most advanced solutions for pet health
and safety.
Two very popular features will also
be returning. The first is Pet Vision,
dedicated exclusively to products and
services launched in the months before
the event, and the latest trends in the
sector (the 2023 show presented more
than 500 innovative ideas), accompanied
by a competition to reward the best
product innovations.
Another crowd-pleaser is Aqua Project,
showcasing the aquarium and terrarium
industry, which will host not only a
display area but also training and
educational sessions for specialised
retailers.
The two brand-new launches of 2025 are
Factory, an area completely dedicated
to the supply-chain, and Atelier, which
will host the very top of the range in pet
wellness and comfort.

EVENTS
From Interzoo 2024 to Petfood
Forum 2025: A Unique Opportunity
for Petfood Companies to Expand
Business
The renewed cooperation of two major events, Interzoo and Petfood Forum, enables businesses in the petfood
industry to connect with key decision-makers across the entire supply chain. After a successful Interzoo 2024
with lots of petfood innovations, the Interzoo Pavilion at Petfood Forum 2025 (28-30 April 2025, Kansas City,
Missouri) offers the next big opportunity to foster growth and expand the network in the global petfood market
– facilitated by a turnkey solution and comprehensive networking features.
The partnership between Interzoo and
Watt Global Media, which has been in
place since 2021, gives petfood companies
a comprehensive insight into current
topics along the entire value chain. Key
events of the cooperation include Petfood
Forum Europe in Nuremberg as part of
Interzoo and the Interzoo Pavilion at
Petfood Forum in Kansas City.
At Interzoo 2024, the petfood sector
showed an enormous presence with more
than 1,500 out of the 2,150 exhibitors
showcasing petfood products and
innovations. The strong participation in
Petfood Forum Europe 2024 collocated
with Interzoo one day prior to the trade
fair, further highlighted the importance of
the Interzoo-week for the global petfood
industry.
In 2023, the first Interzoo Pavilion
at Petfood Forum offered Interzoo
exhibitors the opportunity to join the
event in Kansas City with a special service
package. Going into its second edition,
the Pavilion provides petfood companies
with a unique opportunity to expand
in global markets and meet decisionmakers
of the entire petfood supply chain
at the Kansas City-based Petfood Forum
2025 (28-30 April 2025). The Pavilion’s
turnkey solution contains booth space
as well as marketing assets and exclusive
networking possibilities, making it an
essential platform for companies seeking
to grow their international presence.
Interzoo 2024, the most recent event
of the world’s leading trade fair for pet
supplies, underscored its reputation as a
key meeting place for the international
petfood industry with much in store for
petfood manufacturers and buyers. On a
broad scale Interzoo 2024 highlighted the
importance of petfood within the global
market showcasing numerous petfood
innovations for all kind of animals.
“Interzoo offers a multitude of approaches
towards current petfood trends: New
and innovative ideas presented at the
Fresh Ideas Stage, established companies
seeking new opportunities in petfood,
and an expert discussion of opportunities
in packaging, manufacturing and overall
sustainability at the Petfood Forum
Europe – it’s all wrapped up in one week
of the year", says Dr Rowena Arzt, Head of
Exhibition at Interzoo organizer WZF.
Petfood innovations at Interzoo
At the opening day of Interzoo 2024,
a German brand presented a dog
treat made of cultivated protein. The
vegan air-dried snack, developed with
a cellular agriculture company from
California, is destined to contribute
to sustainability while preserving
nutritional benefits such as amino
acids and postbiotic properties that
are important for pet health. A plantbased
alternative to petfood made from
animal proteins attracted attention as
part of the Fresh Ideas Contest, held at
Interzoo’s Start-up Area on the closing
day of Interzoo 2024: A Dutch start-up
company was among the winners for its
regionally produced, purely plant-based
dry dog food.
In total, more than 1,500 exhibitors at
Interzoo 2024 showcased products and
innovations within the petfood segment,
marking a notable increase from the
previous event. The highest number of
petfood-related products was shown in
the segment of food, snacks and treats
for cats and dogs while the highest
increase compared to previous events
could be found in the segment of petfood
technology. Petfood also captured
substantial visitor attraction, with 28
percent of the 37,000 trade visitors
expressing a particular interest in the
petfood technology sector.

of the world’s premier B2B events for
the pet food industry, Petfood Forum
2025 will gather almost 4,000 industry
professionals and over 400 exhibitors.
“As the pet food market continues to
evolve, additional research, education
and technology advances are crucial
for meeting consumer demands,” said
Steve Akins, executive vice president,
global petfood and events, with WATT
Global Media. “Petfood Forum helps

Becoming Green: Interview Program
on Green Lifestyle
Under the motto "Better. Greener. Together," Green Petfood has made it its mission to make the world
greener through pet food. In order to further raise awareness for sustainable dog and cat food, the company,
together with the specialized agency Leuchtstoff.Media, is breaking new ground and presenting itself as
the exclusive partner of the Green Actors Lounge. This is an association of filmmakers, companies, and
committed individuals advocating for fair collaboration, diversity, green film production, and a sustainable
lifestyle.
As part of the collaboration, the new Green Petfood interview magazine "Becoming Green" was also created,
featuring celebrities like Ursula Karven and Hardy Krüger Junior discussing the topic of green lifestyle. The
magazine is broadcast weekly on YouTube.
The first and second seasons of the new
interview magazine were produced in
collaboration with the Green Actors
Lounge, where Green Petfood made
its debut in March 2024. "We were
interested in how the participants and
ambassadors of the event approach the
topic of 'green lifestyle.' The response
was overwhelming, so Leuchtstoff.
Media was able to move quickly from
the initial idea to implementation," said
Rafael Rybandt, Brand Lead at Green
Petfood.
In the first season of the new Green
Petfood interview magazine "Becoming
Green," well-known actors such as Steve
Windolf, Ursula Karven, Hardy Krüger
Junior, Victoria Jancke, Simon Licht,
and Reiki von Carlowitz share their
understanding of a green lifestyle. They
discuss which projects or individuals
particularly inspire them, how they stay
optimistic, and what they are currently
working on. They also offer interesting
inspiration on how everyone can
take small steps to live and act more
sustainably. This includes the topic of
nutrition – not just for people, but also
for dogs and cats.
Sustainable pet food is an
important part of a green
lifestyle
"In Germany, according to the ZZF*, one
in four households has at least one cat,
and one in five households has at least
one dog. That accounts for 15.7 million
cats and 10.5 million dogs. If all these
pets are fed solely animal-based food
in the future, it will have a tremendous
impact on our ecological footprint.
Especially during the production,
transport, and packaging of pet food, a
significant amount of CO2 is generated.
That’s why, for over ten years, we at
Green Petfood have been developing
solutions for recipes and packaging to
significantly reduce the production of
this harmful greenhouse gas," explains
Rafael Rybandt.
The company, which recently won the
2024 German Sustainability Award,
sees itself as a key pioneer in the entire
pet food industry. With "Becoming
Green," Green Petfood aims to provide
inspiration around the topic of a green
lifestyle. At the same time, to raise
awareness among a broader audience
that sustainable pet food can become
an important part of every pet owner's
green lifestyle.
"There is an urgent need for a shift
in thinking, even when it comes to
choosing dog and cat food. In the future,
we need more alternative meat-reduced
or meat-free pet food concepts that are
affordable and accessible to everyone,"
emphasizes Rafael Rybandt.
Sustainable feeding: Dogs
don’t need meat
All Green Petfood dog food products are
based on meat-reduced or completely
meat-free recipes. Dogs don’t need meat
to be fully nourished; what’s important
is the biological value of the proteins.
This can be well covered by plant-based
proteins from lentils, peas, or insects.
Green Petfood has also been using
high-quality insect proteins for years,
such as in the complete food product
InsectDog. This is also suitable for dogs
with food intolerances, ensuring they
don’t miss out on important nutrients.
Since 2019, the brand has also offered

the first sustainable cat food, FairCat,
which provides an innovative recipe
with poultry and insect protein for
felines. This year, the company is also
launching a new line of wet food for
dogs.

New InsectDog Varieties!
Green Petfood has been delighting dog
owners already since 2013. By using
insects as the source of protein, the

conventional protein sources — and it
is better tolerated by dogs with allergies
and intolerances. Two new varieties are
now joining the InsectDog range.
From four-legged sport stars to placid
pooches — there is something for
everyone in the new InsectDog range.

About Becoming Green
The idea and execution of "Becoming Green" is a result of the collaboration between
Green Petfood, led by Brand Lead Rafael Rybandt, and Leuchtstoff.Media, led by Managing
Director Björn Hoven. The first season of "Becoming Green" includes 11 episodes and will
be broadcast weekly on the Green Petfood YouTube channel.
About Green Petfood
Green Petfood is part of the medium-sized family-owned company ERBACHER the food

manufacturers of super-premium pet food. However, Green Petfood also has a global
presence, with its forward-thinking food products reaching the bowls of dogs and cats
in 38 countries. In line with the company’s philosophy of being "pioneers and leaders in
future-oriented nutrition," Green Petfood focuses on innovative and sustainable food for
dogs and cats. The brand's mission is to rethink pet food, produce it sustainably, provide
complete nutrition for animals, and make the world greener through pet food.
For this reason, all products are produced in a climate-friendly manner. Due to the
pioneering work Green Petfood has done in the field of sustainability, the brand has been
one of the first in the pet food industry to be recognized three consecutive times with the
Green Brands Award for ecological sustainability. Green Petfood is also the winner of the
2024 German Sustainability Award in the Feed and Pet Food category.
