Proposal
for return
of burial
ground
PEOPLE’S VIEWS are being
sought on a proposal to return
ownership of a Māori burial
ground at Pūrau to a local hapū.
The 1300sq-m section at 177
Pūrau Ave, which is widely
known as the “Māori reserve”,
is currently owned by the city
council and has special significance
to Te Hapū o Ngāti Wheke.
The reserve contains an urupā
(Māori burial ground), and Ngāti
Wheke would prefer to see it
managed by court-appointed
Rāpaki trustees who already have
responsibility for three other
urupā in the harbour area.
There have been ongoing discussions
about returning ownership
and management of the land
for more than a century.
City council head of facilities
and property Bruce Rendall said
a significant amount of feedback
has already gone into the council’s
proposal.
“This is a continuation of a
conversation we started with the
community back in 2009, and
that earlier feedback has helped
shape the important proposal
today to return the land to Ngāti
Wheke,” he said.
Splash of colour coming for coastguard
• By Isabella Adams
THIS IS WHAT the Sumner
Coastguard Station will look
like after artist Emily Quane
and others in the community
transform it.
The computer generated design
(right) will be brought to life over
the next few weeks, but Quane is
still on the lookout for people to
be part of the painting process.
Quane, from Redcliffs, came
up with the idea of the mural
while working at the community
hub in Sumner.
While brainstorming ideas
for community events, she suggested
a mural at the coastguard
station, where she is a member
and husband Blair Quane is
president.
“We were looking at doing
some more community events
and we put in to get some funding
from Creative New Zealand,
Creative Communities to do a
mural.
“We thought the coastguard
station would be quite a good
spot to start a mural and do
something where the community
could get involved.”
The design for the mural was
created after meetings with the
station, Mt Pleasant artist Oli Aikawa
and Quane, taking inspiration
from all things coastguard.
“We’ve included the three
BIG PLAN: Artist Emily
Quane is seeking families to
take part in a community
painting day on Sunday.
boats that they have. So they
have a jet ski, they have the big
boat, which is called Blue Arrow,
and a medium boat.
“There’s a surfer and then also
just a bit of the local landscape,
to show exactly where it is.”
Preparations for painting
started earlier this week, with
water blasting of the wall being
done on Tuesday and Quane
projecting the image and
outlining it yesterday.
Community groups and
schools have been recruited to
assist in painting, but Quane
is in search for children and
parents to take part in a
community painting day on
Sunday.
“It’s going to be a paint by
numbers type thing, so it’ll be
quite easy. Even if they’ve not
got any art experience on them,
it doesn’t matter. They can find
the section that they can paint
and go from there.”
• Anyone interested
in taking part in the
community painting day
NEWS 5
Trust aiming to raise $450k
to replant coastal property
A GROUP of Le Bons Bay
residents and holiday home
owners are attempting to
crowdfund the purchase of
a 40ha coastal property and
replant it with native trees.
The plan was hatched late last
year when the property came
on the market, and holiday
home owners Jane Brittenden
and Matthew
Macdonald saw
an opportunity
for the
community to
come together
and protect the
land for future
generations.
The property
forms a long
Matthew
Macdonald
triangle, running from the beach
up the Le Bons Bay stream for
1.5km, and up Dalglishs Rd to
the summit.
“We organised a community
meeting late last year and over
40 people turned up and showed
a lot of enthusiasm for the proposal,”
Macdonald said.
“The owners are very positive
about the idea and have taken
the property off the market for
a time to enable us to raise the
PRESERVATION: The Le Bons Bay Conservation Trust hopes
to buy a coastal property deemed to have ‘considerable
conservation value’.
money, but time is running out.
We need to raise $450,000.”
Following the meeting, the Le
Bons Bay Conservation Trust
was formed with 10 trustees. A
website has been created (lbbct.
org), as well as a Facebook page.
Earlier this month they received
notification that they were now a
registered charitable trust.
“Getting everything in place
has taken a few months, but
we are ready to start serious
fundraising now,” Macdonald
said.
“In the past few weeks we have
received around $190,000 in
pledged donations.”
Well-known biologist Hugh
Wilson conducted an ecological
assessment of the land, and
believes it has high conservation
value.
“The land has considerable
conservation value. It is a
mosaic of bush and tree patches
with shrub and grassland
while along the river boundary
there is significant saltmarsh
turf, sedgeland and rushland,”
Wilson said.
“There is very little coastal
land at sea level in the
conservation estate on Banks
Peninsula, so this would be a
wonderful addition.”
Along the edge of the river
runs what was once the bay’s
main road, heading out to the
now derelict wharf. Much of the
road is still in good condition
and the trust sees restoring it as
one of the group’s priorities.
Said Macdonald: “This would
be a great beginning for the
trust, working alongside the
Christchurch City Council and
the local community to create a
wonderful walking and cycling
track.
“We would love the public
to support this project, and
donations can be made by
visiting our website. We also a
have a Givealittle page.
“Being a charitable trust
means that donations can be
receipted and donors are able to
claim a rebate on the donation.
“If we do not raise enough
money, all donors will be
provided with a 100 per cent
refund,” he added.
Compulsory
health checks
for port staff
unlawful
THE LYTTELTON Port
Company’s move to introduce
compulsory health checks for
staff has been ruled unlawful.
The company expanded its
health monitoring programme
for all employees on July 1 after
consultation with unions.
But the Maritime Union of
New Zealand then took the
policy to the Employment
Relations Authority, which
deemed it was inconsistent
with the collective employment
agreement and therefore
unlawful.
MUNZ assistant national secretary
Ray Fife said the outcome
is a big win for the rights and
well-being of port workers.
It also ensures health monitoring
procedures are subject to
collective bargaining and cannot
be forced on workers without
their agreement.
“This determination by the
ERA reinforces the importance
of collective bargaining in
protecting workers’ rights.”

SPORT 7
to strong result
for young crew
• By Sam Coughlan
THE CHARTERIS Bay Yacht
Club has achieved a fantastic
result in the inaugural junior
Toyota Kiwi Cup in Auckland
last week.
Charteris Bay’s team sailed to
third overall in the tournament,
which spanned 10 races across
two days, behind Auckland
clubs Royal Akarana and
Murray’s Bay.
Club commodore Kris Perano
praised the crew’s efforts in a
tough field.
“It’s a great result. I’m sure
they would have loved to have
got that No 1, but I guess
it just speaks to the level of
competition in that fleet,
represented across the various
clubs, some very talented
sailors,” he said.
The crew of Ben Catton,
Charlie Bridger, Chloe Clinch,
Hayden Chisholm and Miro
Luxford won two of the 10 races
and finished second in two
others, but didn’t place higher
than fifth for the rest.
But Perano said the team had
little experience in the Elliott 7
boat used in competition.
“It’s a relatively unique boat, not
So, with very little training, to be
able to pull off that type of result
was really pleasing,” he said.
“It’s very different when you go
on a boat like that where a group
closely together to actually get a
result.
“Generally they’ve all been
sailing in single-handed boats or
dinghies, so being together as a
different jobs on the boat, it was
just a very different dynamic.”
Hapū could protect sacred site Designer
• From page 1
“By returning it, the hapū
could use and protect the land in
a way that respects its significant
cultural history and value,
ensuring guardianship of it for
future generations.”
The reserve is a burial site
for Chief Tiemi Nohomutu, a
Pūrau resident and leading Ngāi
Tahu tribal chief during the first
decades of European settlement
in the harbour area.
Said Rendall: “It would also
allow Ngāti Wheke to apply for
Māori Reservation status, which
is something the land has held
in name but not in actual law.
The land would then exist in
a similar way to a cemetery –
still publicly
accessible, but
tapu.”
He said the
nearby Pūrau
foreshore and
recreation
ground would
not be affected
by the city
council’s
Bruce
Rendall
proposal to return 177 Pūrau
Ave.
The land currently has
reserve status, so returning it
to the hapū would first involve
applying to the Department
of Conservation to revoke this
status under the Reserves Act
1977.
Its ownership could then be
transferred from the city council
to Ngāti Wheke.
SIGNIFICANT: The reserve is
a burial site for Chief Tiemi
Nohomutu, a Pūrau resident
and leading Ngāi Tahu
rangatira (tribal chief) during
the first decades of European
settlement in Whakaraupō
Lyttelton Harbour.
PHOTOS: NEWSLINE
As part of the transfer
conditions, Ngāti Wheke would
need to apply to the Māori Land
Court to have the land set aside
as a Māori Reservation urupā
under Te Ture Whenua Māori
Act 1993.
• The city council is
holding a public drop-in
session about the proposal
at the Pūrau recreation
ground’s playground, 187
Purau Ave, on October 26
at 11am. Public feedback is
open until December 1.
eyeing her
next event
• From page 1
Inspired by her love of creating
unique outfits for herself from
recycled curtain fabric, Wright
set about crafting the piece that
was not only eye-catching but
completely sustainable.
The garment is made using
recycled curtains, hooks and tape
sourced from the Sustainability
Trust in Wellington.
Wright, who is studying design
at Toi Whakaari in
Wellington, spent
six months using
every spare minute
working on the
unique garment.
“I was working
in Paper Plus in
Ferrymead during
the day and then
Heather
Wright
of an evening, I’d hunker down
and do some sewing. Slowly the
layers started to build up and it
began to take shape.”
As well as earning her a spot
in the final, Wright’s design was
selected to be used on WOW
merchandise – an incredible
achievement for a first-time
entrant.
With one competition under her
belt, Wright has already turned her
thoughts to her next creation.
“I’ve started my garment for
next year, I’m just really excited
to get to work over summer –
and do lots of sewing.”
Library seeking your precious heritage photos
IF YOU HAVE interesting old
photos tucked away in your
cupboard, saved on a digital
camera SD card or stashed on
your phone – now is the time to
dig them out.
The annual Christchurch
City Libraries’ Photo Hunt is
under way and will run until
October 31. The event aims to
digitally gather photos from
across the community alongside
the Christchurch Heritage Festival
which opens on Saturday.
This year’s theme is Active
Heritage – Sport, Recreation and
Leisure.
Said city council head of libraries
and information Carolyn
Robertson: “The photo hunt gives
people the chance to share some
of their precious memories and
highlight key moments in our
city’s history, each photo comes
with its own unique story.
“We’ve held the event every
year since 2008 and it’s a wonderful
way to help with our goal of
creating a photographic archive
of the life and times of Ōtautahi-Christchurch
and Te Pātaka o
Rākaihautū-Banks Peninsula.”
The 2023 overall winner New
Beginnings in NZ featured a sundrenched
Dutch migrant leaning
against a doorframe in 1950s
Christchurch.
Said the judges: “This well
composed photograph gives us
an insight into the life of a Dutch
migrant who has arrived in
1950s Christchurch. After having
lived through the horrors of the
Second World War, she looks relaxed
and happy while standing
casually in the doorframe holding
a cigarette in her hand.
Submitted photos will be
highlighted on the Discovery
Wall at Tūranga and on
Canterbury Stories. Drop-in
photo digitisation events will
be held at Tūranga, Matatiki
13 YORK STREET OPAWA
This lovely character home was only on the market for 21
days and was sold after competitive bidding at auction. My
owners did an amazing job readying the property for sale
and presenting it perfectly to visitors.
I had over 120 visitor groups through the door with 15
repeat viewings! I have a long list of disappointed buyers
who are very keen to purchase before Christmas.
High demand for quality properties in Opawa continues but
there is a lack of stock in the area making now the right time
to sell.
Bloody Minded
War, womanhood and finding my voice
by Susie Ferguson
A powerful memoir on womanhood by RNZ presenter Susie Ferguson
Early in her radio career Susie Ferguson became a war
correspondent. The only woman among hundreds of soldiers, in
a helmet and flak jacket she was one of the boys. None of them
knew she was taking fifteen painkillers a day and relying on
opioids to stem the burning and stabbing pain in her uterus.
Even bloody-minded grit couldn’t have prepared Susie for
womanhood. More than your body’s betrayal, it’s the vicious
bullying only girls can do. It’s waiting years for surgery because your
pain doesn’t matter. It’s the threat of violence in countries where a woman is
either property or the spoils of war. It’s going overnight from a high-powered
career to a stay-at-home mum. It’s the doctor who says you’re wasting his
time. But it is also friendship, love and having the strength to carry on - and to
do it smiling.
New direction for Sumner Ferrymead Foundation
AFTER completing a strategic
review, the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation has a new focus.
“We have made the decision
to offer a range of scholarships
and awards for both community
groups and individuals on
an annual basis, rather than
responding to requests for
financial assistance on an ad
hoc basis” said foundation chair
Martin Hawes.
“When the foundation
started over 30 years ago, we
only responded to requests
for financial assistance. But,
in a changing world and in a
changing community we have
needed to change too.”
The first step was to introduce
the Primary Schools’ Puawai
Award and the Scholarships &
Awards Programme five years
ago.
Then last year, the foundation
introduced the Community
Awards Programme, which
generated a lot of interest.
Following a review of the
foundation’s income and
disbursements, it became
apparent that finding sponsors
for individual scholarships and
awards was a more effective
way to obtain funds to help the
local community as opposed to
looking for untied grants.
In a time when it’s hard to
get funding and it’s equally as
hard to find new trustees who
up their sleeves’, it made sense
to find the most cost-effective
and time-effective way for the
foundation to operate.
With increasing awareness
of the Sumner Ferrymead
Foundation due to the proactive
programmes, the number of
requests for financial assistance
grew, which presented a
problem – how best to decide
who was most worthy of
receiving the funds.
“In many ways it’s a nice
problem to have,” said foundation
treasurer Max Mathias.
“However, because of the
socio-economic demographics
of the foundation’s catchment
area, we knew many of the
applicants would still be able
to pursue their dreams without
our support.
Perfectly placed for families in the heart of
Sumner Village, this 1920s bungalow is a
testament to charm and comfort, where the
authenticity of its era is met with modern ease.
Holding true to its character, this home remains
a showcase of originality, from its weatherboard
cladding and polished timber floors to
its leadlight windows and high ceilings. A
thoughtful renovation in 2005 introduced
contemporary comforts into its timeless
framework, with updates including a refreshed
and open plan living/kitchen area and
upgraded bathroom, partial double glazing,
and comprehensive insulation, all while preserving
its aesthetic integrity.
The spacious living area incorporates the
sunroom, creating an expansive space where
family life naturally unfolds. At the heart of
this domain, the well-appointed kitchen- with
its granite benchtop, generous island, and
900mm electric oven with gas hob—is perfectly
equipped for everything from casual meals to
family celebrations.
A timber-panelled hallway leads to three
bedrooms, including the master with double
wardrobes and French doors to the deck, while
the family bathroom, a laundry and a sweep of
heating solutions, including a gas fire, heat
pump and panel heaters, complete the layout.
The living room opens through bi-fold doors
to deck, patio, and garden, providing a relaxed
setting that soaks in the sunshine and enjoys
hillside views.
Offering creative potential, the garage has been
reimagined as a studio but can be reverted
with ease, complemented by secure off-street
parking and a practical carport.
Just steps from Sumner Primary School and its
pool, with the beach and local shops nearby,
Futuristic Staria a smooth operator
FOR DECADES, New Zealand’s
commercial van landscape has
been ruled by the Toyota Hiace,
with acres of sales daylight
between it and some very
capable rivals, including the
Hyundai Staria Load.
While this model and a
chasing pack of European and
fast-improving Chinese offerings
are working to hard to chip away
at the Hiace’s market share, its
mantle of king of our new van
kingdom looks rock solid.
Hyundai’s Load is a relatively
fresh face on the van block and
packed with advanced safety and
connectivity technology plus
edgy futuristic styling.
Those with a sense of adventure
and seeking a van that gets
their business noticed on the
road will love the Staria Load. In
some ways, it’s a van ahead of its
time with its looks, technology
and safety features. However, I
get a sense that these attributes
are unlikely to fire the imaginations
of conservative van buyers
who prefer the tried and true,
and the Toyota Hiace encapsulates
all that and more.
Buying a van for the most
part is a business decision and
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
trust plays a huge part in the
purchasing process. This plays
right into the hands of the Hiace
with a trust rating that’s off the
scale.
It’s disappointing that three
years into its model life the
Staria Load doesn’t have some
electrified power train options,
given Hyundai is a big player in
the electrified vehicle market in
New Zealand.
The pressure is on them and
others in this segment to make
the switch, especially given the
rapid advances Chinese vanmaker
LDV is making in this
area, with a line up of affordable
full EV models.
Despite the lack of electric
options, Hyundai has done a
fine job with the Staria Load,
a worthy replacement for its
popular predecessor the iLoad.
A four strong model range
starts with a two seater $59,990
six-speed manual, and is
followed by three eight-speed
auto versions. The two-seater
auto is priced at $62,990. A rear
barn door variant nudges the
asking price up another $1k, and
that amount again if you fancy
the versatile five-seat option.
The Hiace by comparison
is more affordable across the
board, and in these challenging
economic times for businesses,
that doesn’t help the Staria’s
cause.
However, the Hiace has
become a victim of its own
success with high global demand
stretching wait times, that,
depending on the model, could
be the end of this year and into
2025. This will sorely the test the
patience of the staunchest Hiace
devotees, leaving the sales door
slightly ajar for alternatives such
as the Staria.
For this road test we are
putting the $62,990 two-seater
Staria Load automatic through
its paces.
Under the bonnet is a proven
130kW 2.2-litre turbo diesel
producing 440Nm of torque,
outputs that closely mirror the
larger 2.8-litre diesel powering
the Hiace.
The Hyundai diesel is lively
and well primed to deliver on
its brief as a modern, safe and
refined van.
The test vehicle started off on
the right foot, impressing with
the smoothness of the motor,
helped by a modern eight-speed
automatic.
Even a decent amount of
cargo onboard doesn’t blunt the
engine’s high energy levels and
work rate.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 6; Styling 6;
Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 8; Value for money:
5; Safety – Five star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 6.5
This is among the most
relaxing and capable vans I have
driven, although to be fair, I
haven’t recently driven any of
the latest European van brigade
led by the likes of the Ford
Transit Custom and Volkswagen
Transporter.
The Staria Load’s eight-speed
automatic is borrowed from the
soon to be replaced Hyundai
Santa Fe SUV. It feels right at
home in the Staria, so much so,
you would think it was born
to live life in a commercial
vehicle. What owners get is a
transmission that revels in the
rigors of the day-to-day grind of
every day van life.
A spacious, light, airy, and
modern cabin provides an
excellent workspace most drivers
will enjoy. Lowered beltlines and
expansive side windows offer
excellent visibility and create a
feeling of openness.
The load area, while not as
generous as some, most notably
the Hiace, is still competitive
with 4935 litres of cargo
capacity.
Most importantly, it’s big
enough to fit a full-size pallet.
This earns the Staria its stripes
as a bona fide van, and is helped
along the way with features such
as dual sliding side doors.
The rear of the vehicle is
distinguished by window framed
vertical tail lamps, and taking
the huff and puff out of loading
and unloading is a nifty lowered
bumper.
Driver information is delivered
via a front display screen, and
touch-based centre fascia, and
there is a well-sorted suite of
safety technology including
forward collision avoidance
assist.
Lifting the Staria to the
top of its ride comfort game,
is a modern multi-link rear
suspension, while rejigged brake
calipers and discs provide strong
reassuring stopping power.
For a tall-ish van, this one
is composed, balanced, and
surprisingly agile when driven
briskly over undulating terrain,
and shows an unexpected
playful side. This isn’t normally
programmed into the DNA of
vans so it’s a great but rare find.
After being sold on the strong
showing of the suspension, the
steering was less endearing and
let down by a lack of road feel,
and not engaging with the driver
as fully as it could or should be.
The modern suspension effortlessly
deflects the full spectrum
of bump and ruts found on our
roads, a quality that will endear
it those whose work place is
behind the wheel of a Staria.
Factor in the comfy and
supportive seats and some
drivers may find it a hard place
to leave at the end of the day.
and add value, this is a no-brainer to claim this HOME in the ever-popular community of Sumner.
With outstanding repairs on the HOME, our owners have decided it’s time for someone with energy, vision, and
know-how to bring this 1920s home to the level it deserves. With current insurance in place, the HOME is insurable,
and the foundation levels are deemed historic.
bathroom, and an open-plan kitchen, living, and dining area that flows into the conservatory. The outdoor space is
well-maintained, featuring a smart wifi connected irrigation system throughout the entire property and ample room
for children to play and enjoy the sunshine.
With recent improvements to make the HOME more comfortable and enjoyable, take full advantage of the double
glazing and still-consented log burner.
