Opening salvoes in battle for council seat
Party politics
and living
Dave Dunlay
Tyrone Fields
• By Kees Chalmers
LOCAL BODY election hopeful
Dave Dunlay has triggered the
opening shots in what looks like
a potentially testy fight for the
Banks Peninsula Ward.
In an interview with Bay
Harbour News last week, Dunlay
said sitting city councillor Tyrone
Fields did not live in the ward.
He was also critical Fields was a
Labour Party member.
But Dunlay misfired over
where Fields lives. Fields moved
to Lyttelton from Somerfield just
before Christmas.
When told by Bay Harbour
News yesterday Fields was
actually living in the ward,
Dunlay said he had learned of
that over the weekend, adding:
“Welcome back”.
Fields responded: “Mr Dunlay
is misinformed, I hope he’s not
misinformed on too many other
things.”
But Fields wouldn’t say when
he moved to Lyttelton and where
he had been living, forcing Bay
Harbour News finding out from
elsewhere.
Fields would only say how long
his family have lived in the area
and how he is proud to represent
Banks Peninsula.
Collaborative project to reveal
details of peninsula seafloor
• By Kees Chalmers
BANKS PENINSULA’S
seafloors are now able to be
explored after a “first of its kind”
project launched last week.
The mapping project, known
as Longairo, is the most comprehensive
seafloor and habitat
maps in Canterbury to date
and is designed to improve the
understanding of coastal marine
ecosystems, which Environment
Canterbury chief scientist Fiona
Shanhun said is critical for informing
resource and planning
decisions.
“We can also look at connections
between the land and the
sea, because obviously what
happens on the land does have
influence on marine environments,”
Shanhun said.
The project began in 2021
when Toitū Te Whenua Land Information
New Zealand started
mapping the Banks Peninsula
seafloor.
The project involves ECan,
Ōnuku Rūnanga of Te Pātaka o
Rākaihautū, the Department of
Conservation, and the University
of Otago.
Recognising the opportunity,
ECan and DOC expanded the
to take images of the seafloor.
ECan allocated $1.8 million to
the project in its 2021-2031 Long
Term Plan with DOC contributing
$100,000 in addition to
providing a vessel.
sonar technology to map the
seafloor, sending sound waves to
measure depth and reveal underwater
terrain.
“That kind of technique really
starts to illuminate the characteristics
of the sea floor beneath,”
Shanhun said.
“It really is the first of its kind.”
She emphasised the
importance of collaboration on
the project.
“Everybody really brings their
own sorts of skills, experience,
expertise and it all came together
to really make this quite a rich
collaborative partnership.
“ I’m really proud of the
way we’ve worked together,
essentially the project has
generated new knowledge
that is going to benefit both
the environment and our
communities, now and for future
generations.”
Onuku Runanga chair Rik
Tainui said Longairo was the
best runanga and Crown agency
project he had worked on.
“It was a huge success, not
only because of the world class
data it produced, but because of
the way we worked together as a
collective,” he said.
The mapping project launched
in Akaroa last Tuesday and was
attended by more than 70 people.
Shanhun described it as
“hugely successful”.
“It was really fantastic
actually to see the interest and
enthusiasm from people in the
room.”
In Brief
Brigades respond to two
crashes on SH75
Akaroa and Little River Volunteer
fire brigades were called out to
two crashes between Cooptown
and The Hilltop on State Highway
75 at the weekend. The first was
about 11pm on Saturday after a
woman drove into a bank and
tipped her car on its side, trapping
her. The brigades assisted the
woman out of the car. She was
uninjured. The brigades were
called out again about 4pm on
Sunday in response to a low-speed
head-on collision between two
cars on the same stretch of road.
The crash was caused by a driver
veering onto the wrong side of
the road. That driver received
minor injuries while the other was
uninjured.
TWELVE YEARS ago Maui
Stuart attempted to swim Cook
Strait.
At the time, he was struggling
mentally and had recently been
diagnosed with sleep apnea and
type 2 diabetes.
Living in Wellington, he felt
stuck and needed a challenge to
pull himself out of his rut.
“I was hurt, I was depressed,
there was something nagging
me, saying hey, your home is over
there,” he said.
He dedicated two years
to training, both physically
and mentally, for the massive
challenge.
He never quite made it across
the strait, but in the final
moments between him and the
water, he asked himself, “Is this
the end of two years of training or
the beginning of something else?”
For Stuart, now 57, the answer
was clear – it was just the
beginning.
“To move forward, you’ve got
to start again every day.”
Six years ago, Stuart moved
to Rāpaki, the home of his
ancestors.
Since then, he has become the
Christchurch Hospital chaplain,
the Rāpaki Marae hapū reverend,
and a passionate advocate for the
“Making other people shine,
that’s a gift isn’t it,” he said.
His memories of his childhood
are fond – playing water polo at
Naval Point Yacht Club, surf life
saving, playing rugby league and
swimming.
He has always had a deep
connection to the water,
swimming competitively from a
young age for the Pegasus Swim
Team.
At 14, he qualified for the 1982
Brisbane Commonwealth Games
“I was much bigger than any
other kid,” he said.
“Maui is a demigod, I didn’t
realise it back then but he used to
leave everyone in his dust.”
He describes his upbringing as
“privileged” but not rich.
He looked up to his parents,
Kath and Henry Stuart, and all
their hard work which influenced
him to do the same.
Growing up around the marae
laid the foundation for who he is
today, he said.
“It’s where your roots are, it
connects everything.”
For Stuart, money is not what
defines a rich life. Instead, his
faith in God and commitment to
helping others give him purpose.
His faith has always been apart
of his life, some of his earliest
memories come from listening to
bible stories at the marae.
“I put my faith in Jesus to
guide me through the day.
Whatever he faces, I face. He has
my back.”
His passion for community
work was inspired by those
before him, including the late
Flora McGregor, who was an
active member in a range of clubs
in the Lyttelton community
before she passed away in 2023.
“I love teaching people how to
be positive and the only way to
do that is to surround yourself
with positive people,” Stuart said.

“I’m not a rich man when it
comes to bank accounts, but I’m a
rich man when it comes to support
and that has only been possible
through what I’m doing now.”
Stuart’s life has taken him
around the world.
In the early 1980s, he played
junior rugby league at centre
for Papanui before his playing
days were cut short after falling
awkwardly and breaking his wrist.
“It was never the same.”
He received $20,000 from a
disability allowance and moved
overseas, first to Perth with
his brother Ricky, and then to
Indonesia to surf.
While in Indonesia, he
contracted malaria from a
mosquito bite and lay on a witch
doctor’s bed, feverish, scared and a
long way from home.
“I learned from it and came back
to the marae. I knew there was a
greater calling for me,” he said.
He met his future wife, Veronica
Pohatu, with whom he shared 18
years, before they separated in
2009.
The relationship was hard to
look back on, but he focused on
the positives – his daughter, K.O
Dessa-Stuart.
“She’s the world to me.”
After the separation, he moved
to Wellington and started a taxi
business.
Fifteen years ago, Stuart was
diagnosed with sleep apnea – a
moment that changed his life, but
in a surprisingly positive way.
The sleep disorder brought
difficulties, but it forced him to
assess how he was managing his
health while still staying positive.
“When you look at your cup,
there’s always a lot more in it than
you think.
“That can only be learnt through
hardship, like what I saw with my
parents and their parents and their
parents, the colonisation of our
people,” he said.
“Be thankful for what you’ve got.
I don’t have much, but I’m very
thankful,” he said.
from Lyttelton to Le Bons and
everywhere in between.
“I lived in London for 13
years, it was a great way to get a
wider perspective on the world
but also showed me how great
it was to be home. I returned
just before the earthquake with
a couple kids who are pretty
much grown up now but have
spent most their lives enjoying
the benefits of growing up in our
beautiful city.”
Fields also responded to Dunlay
over his Labour connections
and party politics affecting local
government decisions.
“I’m comfortable in saying I’m
a member of the Labour Party
but that definitely doesn’t interfere
with my decision making in
local government.”
Dunlay said he was not a
member or affiliated with any
political party.
Asked by Bay Harbour News
who he voted for at the last
election, he said he couldn’t
remember, but he was part of the
movement to change the Labour
Government.
Dunlay, a former radio host, is
campaigning on having lived in
Lyttelton for almost 30 years.
The Prosecutor
One Man’s Battle to Bring Nazis to Justice
by Jack Fairweather
The true story of a Jewish lawyer who returned
to Germany after WWII to prosecute war
crimes, only to find himself pitted against a
nation determined to bury the past. At the
end of the Nuremberg trial in 1946, some of
the greatest war criminals in history were
sentenced to death, but hundreds of thousands
of Nazi murderers and collaborators remained
at large. The Allies were ready to overlook
their pasts as the Cold War began, and the
horrors of the Holocaust were in danger
of being forgotten. In The Prosecutor, Jack
Fairweather brings to life the remarkable story
of Fritz Bauer, a gay German Jew who survived
the Nazis and made it his mission to force his
countrymen to confront their complicity in the
genocide. The result is a searing portrait of a
nation emerging from the ruins of fascism and
one man’s courage in forcing his people--and
the world--to face the truth.
Broken Country
By Clare Leslie Hall
Everyone in the village said nothing good would
come of Gabriel’s return. And as Beth looks
at the man she loves on trial for murder, she
can’t help thinking they were right. Beth was
seventeen when she first met Gabriel. Over
that heady, intense summer, he made her think
and feel and see differently. She thought it was
the start of her great love story. When Gabriel
left to become the person his mother expected
him to be, she was broken. It was Frank who
picked up the pieces and together they built a
home very different from the one she’d imagined
with Gabriel. Watching her husband and son,
she remembered feeling so sure that, after
everything, this was the life she was supposed
to be leading. But when Gabriel comes back,
all Beth’s certainty about who she is and what
she wants crumbles. Even after ten years, their
connection is instant. She knows it’s wrong and
she knows people could get hurt. But how can
she resist a second chance at first love?
The Lost English Girl
by Julia Kelly
Liverpool, 1935 - Raised in a strict Catholic
family, Viv Byrne knows what’s expected of
her: marry a Catholic man from her workingclass
neighbourhood of Liverpool and have
his children. However, when she finds herself
pregnant after a fling with Joshua Levinson, a
Jewish man with dreams of becoming a famous
Jazz musician, Viv knows that a swift wedding is
the only answer.
Five years later - On the eve of World War II, Viv
is forced with the impossible choice to evacuate
her young daughter, Maggie, who will stay with
the Thompsons, affluent strangers who live in the
safety of the countryside.
Telling the harrowing story of England’s many
evacuated children, bestselling author Julia
Kelly’s The Lost English Girl explores how one
simple choice can change the course of a life, and
what we are willing to forgive to find a way back
to the ones we love and thought lost.
Slimed for a good cause
Mt Pleasant School hit a fundraising
milestone last week in its effort to build a
new junior playground – celebrating with
pupils sliming teachers Royce Madigan and
Mollie Ladley.
So far, $24,201.77 has been raised, but
principal Donna Ellery said it’s just a “drop in
the bucket” compared to what is needed.
The current playground is aging and may
soon have to close due to health and safety
concerns. Since the project is not funded
by the Ministry of Education, the school
launched a three-year community-driven
fundraising campaign last year.
To keep the momentum going, the PTA
has planned several events including discos,
a quiz night, and a crazy colour fun run for
the whole school on April 10. This time,
Ellery will be in the hot seat for the sliming.
“I’m not looking forward to it,” she admitted.
Mingle gears up
for big weekend
• By Kees Chalmers
FROM A small surfing gettogether
on Sumner Beach to
a popular event on the global
surfing calendar, the Single
Fin Mingle keeps going from
strength to strength.
Now in its 11th edition, the
Single Fin Mingle returns to
Sumner Beach today, attracting
surfing and musical talent from
around the world for the four-day
event.
“I don’t think I ever dreamt
that it could grow to the level it
has and be known on the world
stage,” said director Ambrose
McNeill.
McNeill hopes to build on last
year’s finals day attendance of
more than 1000. Tickets for the
street party are tracking to cross
the 1000 mark as well.
Eighty-eight male and female
surfers will be at the village,
among them 50 from overseas.
They include established
professional Lola Mignot from
Mexico, who will be at the event
for the first time, and Australian
Kai Ellice-Flint, who recently
won the world qualifying series
in Australia and will be vying for
a world title later this year.
Reigning champion and Sumner
surfer Jack Tyro will be looking to
make history by becoming the first
men’s surfer to win back to back
titles at the mingle.
Headlining the street party is
Sydney cult hero Donny Benet,
Melbourne six-piece disco
funk group China Beach, and
Wellington synth-pop group
Kita.
The unique sense of community
that surrounds the Single Fin
Mingle is what makes it stand out
from other surfing competitions,
McNeill said.
“It’s a lot more than just
going to a surf competition or a
concert, there really is a feeling
of connection that we’ve always
tried to celebrate.
“It’s just a great spectacle for
anyone and everyone.”
Best birthday for Olivia
• By Kees Chalmers
OLIVIA COURTNEY’S 21st
birthday could not have been
better after her crew of four
took home gold at the BP New
Zealand IRB championships at
the weekend.
Taylors Mistake’s U23 female
mass rescue team beat out
Bethells Beach and Sumner to
clinch victory.
Courtney struggled to find the
words to describe the feeling as
she ran across the finish line with
daylight between her and the
other competitors.
“I definitely had an adrenaline
buzz for like 30 minutes after.”
The mass rescue event requires
the driver and the crewperson
to rescue two patients and drop
them back to shore one at a time.
Courtney was the driver, with
Rory Gordon crewperson and
Zaela Powrie and Lily Carter
patients.
The team had been training
for the past seven months in
preparation for the championships,
to ensure they nailed each
component of the race when it
mattered most.
And nail it they did, with
Courtney describing their performance
as the “perfect race”.
“Everyone in the team
executed their part, it was really
impressive.
GOLDEN GIRLS: Taylors Mistake’s U23 female mass rescue
team Zaela Powrie (left), Olivia Courtney, Lily Carter, Rory
Gordon won gold at the nationals.
“Bringing it in and hugging
the girls afterwards, knowing
our names (will be) up on the
national winners board at the
surf club is just something else,”
she said.
Courtney said the victory
came as a surprise to the team,
considering the “insanely good”
talent alongside them at the startline.
“For us to get ahead and win
was just crazy,” she said.
The conditions at Waipu Cove
in Northland played in Taylors’
favour, with the high tide
and choppy waters not dissimilar
to what the crew is used to at
home.
Sumner was third in the event
with its team of Harakeke Mote,
Brooklyn Baillie, Sienna Kay and
Sienna Caetano.
Courtney has been surf life
saving since she was 12 and has
competed in IRB racing for the
past seven years.
Until now, a national title had
evaded her grasp.
Courtney started at North
Beach but came over to Taylors
Mistake three seasons ago and is
now the club’s IRB co-ordinator.
She said it was the best decision
she has ever made.
“It’s (Taylors Mistake) like a
second family for me and to be
celebrating with that team on
our win, it’s just a great feeling,”
she said.
Duo aiming to lead Cook Islands
to victory at Bali T20 tournament
• By Kees Chalmers
WELL-KNOWN Sumner cricket
identity Dan Vann is heading
to Indonesia next week as the
head coach of the Cook Islands
women’s team at the Bali Bash.
“It’s pretty exciting,” Vann said.
“It’s definitely cool to help out a
smaller nation.”
Among the squad is
Canterbury Magicians pace
bowler Gabby Sullivan, who has
strong ties to Sumner. She will
make her debut and captain the
side in the T20 tournament, held
from April 9-13.
Sullivan’s Cook Islands
heritage comes from her father’s
side and has always been a strong
part of her life.
“It’ll be a really cool
opportunity to represent my
grandma and my dad’s side,”
Sullivan said.
“That’s one of the main reasons
I play cricket – it’s for my family.”
As she prepares for this new
challenge, Sullivan reflects on
the familiar sight of her family
watching from the grass banks
at Hagley Oval. Now, playing
for the Cook Islands, she looks
forward to sharing the game with
the other side of her family.
The Cook Islands will play
hosts, Indonesia, the Philippines
and the Australian Indian
Women’s Cricket Association XI
in a round-robin format before a
play-off final.
Vann’s connection with
Cook Islands cricket began
unexpectedly during a family
holiday when he saw a cricket
training session taking place.
After offering to help and
donating gear, Vann formed a
strong relationship with the team
and was then invited to run a
training camp with the women’s
team before the Pacific Cup in
2024.
The team’s usual coach was
unavailable for the Bali Bash, so
Vann was asked if he wanted to
step in.
“Cricket is essentially
a game of failures, so
when I’m talking with
younger players I remind
them to keep the
enjoyment and positivity
at the forefront.”
– Gabby Sullivan
He also runs his own coaching
clinic – Evolution Performance –
which specialises in developing
cricket, rugby and mental skills.
Sullivan plays club cricket for
North West, but her childhood
club was Sumner, where she
grew up and where her family
still live.
Since joining the Magicians
in 2015, she has taken 62 T20
wickets at an average of 19.16.
To Vann’s surprise, cricket is
a popular sport in the Pacific
nation, though resources are
scarce.
“We asked the girls what
playing for the Cook Islands
means to them, and a lot said it
was to inspire other Polynesians
to play the game,” he said.
Participating in tournaments
like the Bali Bash is important
for the growth of cricket in
smaller countries like the Cook
Islands, Vann said.
This will be Sullivan’s second
time in an international
environment, after being
brought into the White Ferns
squad in 2021 as cover for the
injured Lea Tahuhu.
“It made my drive much
bigger for the game, thinking
this could actually be a career of
mine,” she said.
“It was cool seeing what the
women’s game has developed
into, it was just really exciting.”
Sullivan did not make it onto
the field but she thrived in the
ultra-professional environment
and the experience taught her a
lot about the training standards
required to reach that level.
Now, as captain of a younger
COACHING: Dan Vann and Gabby Sullivan are working hard ahead of their trip to the Bali Bash
tournament with the Cook Islands women’s team.
PHOTOS: GEOFF SLOAN
and less experienced Cook
Islands squad, Sullivan plans
to take a different leadership
approach.
“They just play because they
love to play, which is really
exciting.
“Cricket is essentially a game
of failures, so when I’m talking
with younger players I remind
them to keep the enjoyment and
positivity at the forefront,” she
said.
“It’s definitely growing and
gaining more awareness in
Pacific countries, which is really
cool.”
Before departing for
Indonesia, Vann and Sullivan
will join the rest of the squad
in Auckland this weekend for
training sessions.
Family Haven on the Lower Slopes
51 Moncks Spur Road, Redcliffs
4 bedrooms, 2 living, 2 bathrooms, 1 study, 1 car garaging
COASTAL AUCTION SERIES
Occupying an exclusive lower-slope position, this character-filled home
embraces breathtaking scenery and is on the market for the first time in
over 30 years.
This cherished family home enjoys an enviable location, offering privacy,
abundant sunshine, and a tranquil outlook over the estuary and ocean.
Thoughtfully designed with four bedrooms and two bathrooms, the
layout is highlighted by a stunning top-floor master retreat. A study/
sunroom on the lower level could be utilised as a fifth bedroom if
required.
A major renovation in 2000 expanded the upper level to suit a
growing family, adding a primary suite with its own balcony to capture
breathtaking views while preserving the home’s timeless character
charm. This level also includes another generously sized bedroom and a
well-appointed bathroom, ensuring both comfort and functionality.
Featuring warm timber accents throughout, rimu flooring, elegant
leadlights, inbuilt bookcases, and high ceilings, this home retains its
appeal. Two generous living areas flow effortlessly onto the spacious
wraparound decking, ideal for entertaining which extends to a large flat
lawn and a beautifully established garden, offering a peaceful, naturefilled
retreat.
Substantial upgrades in 2012 included re-leveling, new decking, a partial
reclad and rewire, along with the addition of a newly built garage. With
easy access and ample off-street parking, the home balances everyday
comfort with practical desirability.
3 bedrooms, 2 living, 2 bathrooms, 1 study, 2 car garaging
COASTAL AUCTION SERIES
Composed by Site Architecture and completed in 2015, this
residence establishes a design-forward response to modern living in
Moncks Bay.
Wrapped in cedar and concrete block with a concealed garage door
for curb-side cohesion, the home’s clean-lined exterior gives way to
interiors where custom timber joinery and engineered oak flooring
are lifted by a sunlit bench seat that brings function and familiarity.
Defined by subtle separation and soaring scale, the open-plan layout
distinguishes living from dining beneath a dramatic double-height
void, while the granite-finished kitchen and butler’s pantry ensure
form meets finesse at the heart of the home.
Connection to the great outdoors is effortless and elevated, stepping
out to terraced gardens and a boardwalk that draws the eye to
a viewing platform above the estuary, framing both sea air and
spectacular sunsets.
Neale Bettman
When you meet Neale Bettman, you may be wondering how does this Aussie fit into Christchurch NZ?
Maybe it’s his enthusiasm coupled with an aura of professionalism and poise (and possibly the
Australian accent!) that captures your attention. Meet the Sydneysider who swam against the tide
six years ago and now calls Christchurch home.
Neale’s relationship with Christchurch began over two decades ago, a visitor to the city innumerable
times, until, in 2019, he took the plunge and booked one-way tickets with his family. Although
Christchurch is where his heart is at, it’s Neale’s business acumen, learned and honed in Sydney that he
leans into, bringing his vast international experience and expertise to Canterbury’s real estate scene.
Neale spent four years in residential sales in Sydney’s highly competitive North Shore and Eastern
suburbs. However, he made his mark as co-founder of one of Sydney’s leading recruitment agencies,
selling the prominent business after thirteen years at the helm. Neale contributes his phenomenal
success to keeping promises and his fastidious attentionto detail and process, alongside a good oldfashioned
dose of integrity and accountability. They’re values he stands by, and when you throw in
leadership, the drive to succeed and his down to earth but self-assured nature; you’ve got the man in a
nutshell.
Thriving in a high-energy environment, Neale is the consummate professional. But the vibes don’t stop
when he steps away from work. A single figure golfer, he’s also a fitness enthusiast, chief cheer squad
at junior netball and hands-on dad at cricket and rugby! Present in the moment, Neale gives his all to
everyone and everything.
