Revamped burlesque
show returns to stage
• By Kees Chalmers
“OUR MISSION is to just give
them a great time,” is what
performer David Ladderman had
to say about his circus company’s
upcoming season.
The 14-strong collective of
entertainers are assembled from
around the globe and convene
at the Lyttelton Circus Theatre
Company (LCTC), and with them
they bring a wholly original stage
show – Berlin Burlesque.
Running from January 15 to
February 1, the Lyttelton Arts
Factory will be transformed
into a 1930s Berlin nightclub
to tell the real life story of Erik
Jan Hanussen, an Austrian
master illusionist, charlatan and
clairvoyant.
“He’s the European Harry
Houdini who no-one knows
about,” Ladderman said.
He described the show as a
“celebration of the human spirit”.
Previously named ‘The Loons’,
the circus company performed
a version of the current show 12
years ago, but was forced to stop
due to the June 2011 earthquake.
Eccentric
ark house
and iconic
café go on
the market
• By Dylan Smits and
Kees Chalmers
TWO WELL known properties in
the Bay Harbour News area are up
for sale.
What is commonly known as
the ark house on Clifton Hill and
the Scarborough Fare Café and Ice
Cream Shop are on the market.
The owner of Scarborough Fare,
Lyndon Hadden, would not discuss
the sale of the property with Bay
Harbour News.
The cafe and ice cream shop is on
the market for $1.2m.
Any potential new buyer for the
venue will have an opportunity to
own a piece of Christchurch’s hospitality
history – the site has hosted
tea rooms, fine dining restaurants
and cafés since the 1930s.
It currently operates as a daytime
licensed café with a longstanding
community presence and is a firm
favourite with ice cream fans,
selling about 900 cones on busy
summer days.
The biblically inspired ark house
was built in 2004 by its original
owners, Bev and Ken Loader, and
took several attempts before selling
for $2.3m in 2016.
Nestled on the hillside in
Clifton, the unique property
takes the shape of a three-storey,
timber-clad ark.
At times used as a wedding
venue, the ark house boasts
a bar and ballroom and two
commercial kitchens, as well as
large living spaces on its three
‘deck’ levels.
The 0.1ha property has a
capital value of $2.8m and is
being sold by Sothebys.
An auction date is yet to be
confirmed, but will likely take
place in about a month.
The Loaders bought the land
on Clifton Hill more than 50
years ago and developed the
surrounding landscape into the
Gethsemane Gardens, which are
now closed.
This complimented the ark
when it was used as a wedding
and events venue.
Rotary honours community-minded pupils
• By Barbara Crooks
COMMUNITY service by 11
primary school pupils has been
recognised with a special award
from Ferrymead Rotary.
The awards, based on the
recommendations of teachers,
are made to pupils who have
demonstrated key leadership
aspects.
The criteria are based on pupils’
ability to be good listeners,
to show initiative, to follow
through on their actions, and to
demonstrate the ability to work
with a variety of people to get the
job done.
Those honoured were: Phoenix
Prime and Lincoln Binnie
(Bromley); Ezrah Dela Cruz
(Heathcote Valley); Rishtika
Reddy and Archie Campbell (Mt
Pleasant); Eli Dimbleby and Zoe
Mulling (Redcliffs); Riley Legge
and Izzy Every (Our Lady Star of
the Sea); Cruz Webb-St John and
Illiane Powrie (Sumner); Payton
Tuhimata and Sakura Tatsumo
(Te Waka Unua).
Reports from the schools
revealed a variety of qualities
and activities across the awardwinners.
These included:
• Kindness to and support for
other pupils; leadership roles;
• Displaying excellent manners
within the school and wider
community;
• Contributions to school
sports teams, other school
activities;
• Work in school libraries;
• Community involvement
(some recipients have been
working with elderly residents,
or have been involved in
community or church
activities);
• Positive role modelling for
fellow pupils;
• Demonstrating the ability to
work with adults, teachers and
other pupils in various roles.
Ferrymead Rotarian Pat
Edward, who has overseen the
project in recent years, said
the aim is to promote a “good
citizen” ethic within schools
and the wider community.
She emphasised the criteria
for the awards do not include
academic or sporting skills.
Rather, they concentrate
on pupils’ contribution and
service to the school and the
community, and relationships
with fellow pupils.
Nominations are made by
‘All the best of what a live gig is’
• From page 1
“We were in and out of each
other’s lunchboxes, constantly on
tour together, and then the world
changed with the earthquakes and
everyone had to make for the hills
to make sure they stayed in work.
We suddenly didn’t see each other
very much.”
The group reunited in 2016 and
last year evolved their decade-old
cabaret show into a multimedia
production combining theatre,
circus acts and live musicianship.
“This show is all the best of what
a live gig is. It’s a wonderful band
that makes you feel great, it’s also
a wonderful piece of theatre,” Ladderman
said.
“It’s a lovely story, plus it’s a
cabaret show with circus and
entertainment, and it’s all melded
together in a wonderful night.”
Ladderman said the group’s
focus had shifted towards appreciating
the privilege of performing
together again.
“If we’re skiers, we’re not going
for the biggest jumps anymore,
we’re going for the smoothest ride.”
One of the highlights of last
year’s tour was exchanging stories
with audience members from
when they came to see the original
show more than 12 years ago.
“It’s pretty special, that’s
magic.”
Ladderman said audiences
around the world didn’t differ
REUNITED: Lead actor Tom Trevella performing as illusionist Erik Jan Hanussen in 2024. Last
year was the first time the group of actors, circus performers and musicians had performed
together in more than a decade.
much, but he thought the Banks
Peninsula crowd were a particularly
knowledgeable bunch.
“They’re full of nouse. They’ve
seen quite a bit, they’ve read quite
a bit and therefore they know
their own taste.”
“You can feel it at halftime. You
can feel the buzz which is great
for us because we feed off that.”
Berlin Burlesque is a naturally
evolving act, but Ladderman was
adamant they will stick to the
show they know.
“We’re going to try and sharpen
the pen, narrow the focus and put
more emphasis on the story.”
One change to the cast is the
replacement of Jola Siezen – with
Rebecca Salmi joining Jola’s twin
Nele to become The Twisty Two.
The Lyttelton leg of the tour
isn’t the only project the LCTC
have planned for this year, as the
cast and crew plan to take their
show to Melbourne in April.
To afford the trip, the Lyttelton
season has to sell out and the
group will also be holding a
fundraiser on March 15 at the
Lyttelton Arts Factory.
“Ultimately, we can’t wait
but we’ve got a whole fish to fry
before that – putting together
the best show we can for Banks
Peninsula,” Ladderman said.
Sailors embark on toughest leg
of bid to circumnavigate globe
• By Tom Blessen
TWO FEMALE sailors from
the Indian Navy left Lyttelton
on Sunday for Port Stanley
in the Falkland Islands – the
longest leg of their attempt to
circumnavigate the globe.
The South Island’s Indian
community bid farewell to
Lieutenant commanders Roopa
K and Dilna K and the crew
of the 17m-long Indian Naval
Sailing Vessel Tarini.
“This is the longest leg
of the expedition, covering
approximately 10,400km,”
India’s Defence Ministry said in
a statement.
INSV Tarini arrived in
Lyttelton on December 22 after a
28-day journey from Fremantle,
Australia, that spanned about
6500km.
The expedition started in Goa
on October 2.
During their stay in New
Zealand, the crew conducted
repairs and maintenance on the
vessel, focusing on preparations
for the challenging upcoming
leg.
“The vessel will be crossing the
South Pacific, pass through the
treacherous Drake Passage and
cross Cape Horn to reach Port
Stanley,” the ministry said.
About 50 members of the
Indian community attended the
farewell ceremony, including
Christchurch Multicultural
Council president Surinder
Tandon.
“I was fortunate to see INSV
Tarini back in 2017 and now
again in 2024,” Tandon said.
In December 2017, a six-member
crew led by Lieutenant Commander
Vartika Joshi docked in
Lyttelton for two weeks, sharing
India’s maritime history.
“It’s incredibly inspiring to
witness these brave sailors – not
just as role models for women,
but for everyone,” Tandon said.
Two naval officers from India,
including retired Commander
Abhilash Tomy, were also present
at the farewell ceremony.
Tomy, the first Indian to complete
a solo, non-stop circumnavigation
of the globe, had been a
mentor to the crew.
The Indian High Commission
in Wellington said the officers
had been preparing for this expedition
for three years.
Lieutenant commanders
Roopa K and Dilna K had
received training under Tomy’s
guidance.
“The circumnavigation of
INSV Tarini is a significant
milestone in India’s ocean sailing
enterprise, showcasing the
nation’s maritime capabilities
and commitment to gender
equality on the high seas,” the
high commission said.
The expedition aimed to
cover about 40,000km over eight
months aboard the vessel.
After Port Stanley, the crew
plans to sail to Cape Town, South
Africa, before returning to Goa.
under way
WORK HAS started to rebuild
a section of Charteris Bay
Rd, which has reached the
end of its life and needs to be
strengthened.
The road will be reduced to
one lane until work is expected
to be completed by January 17.
The city council said there
will be delays of up to 20min
between 8am-4pm until Friday.
It said the work will be disruptive
and is asking for “patience
and understanding”. It is also
asking for users to obey the temporary
traffic measures in place.
The city council said the work
has been scheduled during the
holiday period when there is
less commuter traffic and no
school traffic to cause the least
disruption overall.
1980s – THE TEDDY BEARS’ PICNIC
Bears of all shapes and sizes
used to go down to Hagley Park
for the annual Teddy Bears’
Picnic, held in January as part
of the SummerTimes Festival.
Thousands turned out for
the event in the early 80s, with
prizes awarded for largest, cuddliest
and most original bear.
A formal competition was
dropped in 1988 because it all
got a bit growly. It seemed to
“bring the nasty side out in
people”, the city council’s marketing
officer, Jan Atkinson,
told The Press.
“It all got a bit chaotic, with
parents pushing and shoving
and children getting grumpy,
so now we have roving judges
looking for the most original
and cuddliest bear. That seems
to work better.”
Every bear received an official
certificate, biscuit and lollies.
In 1994, Christchurch broke
the world record for the most
teddy bears at a picnic, with
16,837.
The record was short-lived
– Dublin Zoo recorded 33,573
the following year.
Christchurch attempted
to regain the record in 1999.
Picnic co-ordinator Michelle
Beckett said at the time each
bear had to be registered individually
on site in order to meet
Guiness Book of World Records
criteria.
“Unfortunately only teddy
bears can be counted, but koala
bears and panda bears are still
welcome to come along.”
The attempt was
unsuccessful; Dublin Zoo holds
the record to this day.
The first teddy bear is
thought to have been made in
1903, after then United States
president, Theodore “Teddy”
Roosevelt – who liked a spot
of grizzly shooting – refused
to take aim at a bear cub produced
for his sport, after none
were seen in the wild.
Other famous teddies include
Winnie the Pooh, Paddington
and Rupert.
Teddy Bear’s Picnic Day is
celebrated globally on July 10
and is based on the song The
Teddy Bear’s Picnic, composed
by John W Bratton in 1907.
Fun fact: The collective noun
for teddy bears is “a hug”.
