Flippered friends know their place
The penguins popped up
at Naval Point last weekend
– and they’re back this
weekend. More than 100
ceramic kororā (whiteflippered
penguins) made
by the community are on
display as part of Know
Your Place, a two-week
synthesis of art and proenvironmental
action.
Ceramic artist Nikki
Wallace-Bell collaborated
with Ngāti Wheke
kaumātua, the community,
Lyttleton Primary School
pupils, the Climate Change
Campus and families from
Naval Point Yacht Club
to create the kororā. The
white-flippered penguins
are one of the world’s
smallest – growing just over
25cm tall and weighing
1.5kg – but have been
identified as an endemic
species and a barometer
for a healthy harbour by
Whaka-Ora Health Harbour.
The Penguin Peninsula
exhibition is one part of
a project led by Manaaki
Whenua Landcare
Research. Waddle on down
from 10am-4pm Saturday
and Sunday to see the
display.
Heathcote Expressway
to remain open for now
The closure of the Heathcote
Expressway has been delayed.
KiwiRail has agreed to the Council pausing the closure
of the 1.5km section of the Puari ki Kahukura Heathcote
Expressway between Vaila Place and Truscotts Road.
How long the cycleway will remain open for is yet to
be confirmed.
Gates were due to be locked until significant upgrades
are installed after KiwiRail told the Council the Scruttons
Road rail crossing was unsafe for ongoing use.
We’re working with KiwiRail on a future closure date,
we’ll also keep working with them on design and
confirmation of costs for the rail crossing upgrade.
