Transforming Takapūneke
THIS IS WHAT the next stage
of work to develop Takapūneke
Reserve near Akaroa will look like
when completed.
City council head of parks
Rupert Bool said construction
on this stage of the $21 million
project would be starting soon.
“We’re scheduled to start work
on this second phase in January,
and it should be finished by
Matariki 2025, but the whole
development is a 10-year project.”
The focus will be the creation
of two takarangi – a double spiral
pathway that will also serve as a
discovery trail – and a network of
paths with design aspects based
on the harakeke (flax) in the area.
Another centrepiece will be
the installation of a second pou,
joining one unveiled in 2022.
The work is part of a development
plan, created jointly by the
city council and Ōnuku Rūnanga,
which, when completed, will look
to acknowledge the cultural and
historical importance of the site,
which was the scene of a massacre
in 1830.
CONNECTIONS: A network
of spiral pathways and the
are part of a plan to
Sumner’s
brand new
skatepark
SUMNER’S LONG-awaited
skatepark will have its official
opening on Saturday.
Nestled on Nayland St on
re-purposed red zone land, it sits
behind the Matuku Takotako:
Sumner Centre, on the site of the
former Marine Tavern.
Skaters will finally be able
throw down tricks at the purpose-built
permanent skate park
next to the new Village Green
– a grassed area featuring picnic
tables, sun umbrellas, barbecues
and a performance space.
“The park is
hugely anticipated
by local youth and
older skaters alike.
It’s a great bowl
setup with a fun
flow bowl, and
the South Island’s
only keyhole
shaped bowl,” said
Damian
Doyle
Damian Doyle, skate ramp builder
and local skatepark advocate.
“The design’s a good nod to
skating’s roots in surfing, which
is a perfect fit for Sumner, and
the street features of rails and
ledges are ideal for progressing
your tricks.”
Rocket launchpad
plans for spit fail
to get off ground
• By Phil Pennington
THE GOVERNMENT is
backing off plans to build rocket
launchpads at Kaitōrete Spit
as the global launch market
continues to fly high, despite
receiving no written advice on
the issue.
The aerospace industry says
it would “love” to see rockets
launched from the Tāwhaki Aerospace
Centre by Lake Ellesmere,
but realises times are tight.
Birdlings Flat residents told
Bay Harbour News in July of
their opposition to building
launch pads at the centre, based
12km from the settlement.
Some were “blindsided” by
the possibility of vertical rocket
launches, and said Tāwhaki had
previously ruled out the launches
in a community meeting.
Tāwhaki has built a $5 million
runway, but its other aim – to
build one or several launchpads
– has been set back by Space
“I have made a decision that
the current government’s main
interest for Tāwhaki is to explore
the potential of advanced
aviation,” she told RNZ, despite
earlier singing the praises of
space launches.
“My position is that the
Crown will not subsidise vertical
launches from Tāwhaki,” she
said.
Kaitōrete could generate $300
require vertical launching.
The Government also cut the
centre’s funding earlier this year.
RNZ requested copies of the
advice behind Collins’ decision.
“There are no specific documents
behind this and therefore
I am declining your request,” she
responded.
The aerospace centre has not
about whether it still had plans
Studies for the previous government
said the space industry
was highly dependent in its early
stages on having government
But the centre had industry
backing, said Aerospace NZ
president Mark Rocket.
“I know that there has been
domestic and international
interest for rocket launches from
Tāwhaki,” he said.
“But at the same time, we need
to recognise that the Government
has a fixed budget, so at the
Reserve’s design to reflect
site’s cultural importance
• From page 1
Takapūneke sits between
Akaroa and Ōnuku in Akaroa
Harbour and was an important
centre for trade between Ngāi
Tahu and European settlers.
On November 6, 1830, Ngāti
Toa chief Te Rauparaha captured
Te Maiharanui, the Ngāi Tahu
chief and his family after luring
them aboard the merchant ship
Elizabeth with the promise of
trading flax for muskets. Te
Rauparaha then led his warriors
ashore to attack Takapūneke
village, killing almost everyone
and enslaving dozens.
Following the massacre, the area
became tapu.
The events prompted the British
intervention in New Zealand
that ultimately led to Te Tiriti o
Waitangi.
In 2002 the reserve was
registered as wāhi tapu (a place of
outstanding historical and cultural
heritage values).
“The collaboration between
Ōnuku and the council has been
invaluable in terms of creating a
development plan so rich in meaning,”
said Ōnuku Rūnanga chair
Rik Tainui.
“Together, we’ve been able to
create an organic design that
TRANQUIL: Covered seating areas for rest and reflection are
a key part of the Takapūneke Reserve development.
brings the best out of the natural
landscape and the history of this
tapu site.
“It’s a real synthesis of technical
expertise and a deep connection
with the whenua – and the designs
show that it’s going to be a truly
special destination for people from
all over Aotearoa, not just locally.”
The narrative of harakeke is
all through the design, from
the timber deck with its weaved
patterns, to the furniture, with
several different seats inspired by
the seed pod and flower stem of
the harakeke.
Bool said Takapūneke is rich
in natural beauty as well as
history, which make it a perfect
place for reflection.
“Both takarangi (spirals)
will include places for rest and
reflection, with plenty of seating
and a shelter with a coloured resin
roof section bound with harakeke.
“We’re also planting 22,000
natives, so keep an eye out for
some community planting days
over winter 2025.”
With funding confirmed for
the development plan in last
year’s Long Term Plan 2024-
2034, design is now under way
for future phases, which will
include a new car park, entrance,
asphalt pathway, toilet, signage
and interpretation, and further
restoration of the whenua.
Game-changing designs from the iconic series
by Kevin McCloud
A collection of the most iconic, stand-out builds
from this perennially popular, long-running
TV series, as chosen by Kevin McCloud. Grand
Designs is famous for showcasing spectacular
self-build projects and in the process has itself
had a major impact on domestic architecture
and design. As the programme celebrates
its 25th anniversary, Kevin chooses for this
book his selection of the most impressive and
memorable houses. From houses crafted from
shipping containers to eco-builds and luxe
constructions, it demonstrates the extraordinary
power of design and of the imagination to
create stunning living spaces. Kevin provides a
fascinating view of how the design of our homes
has changed to reflect contemporary lifestyles,
and the important legacy of this award-winning
programme.
The Wrong Hands
The new intriguing, unique and completely unpredictable
Detective Miller mystery by Mark Billingham
This is one case Miller won’t want to open . . .
Unconventional Detective Declan Miller has a
problem. Still desperate to solve the murder of
his wife, a young man has just appeared on his
doorstep with a briefcase . . . containing a pair of
severed hands. Miller knows this case is proof of
a contract killing commissioned by local ne’er do
well Wayne Cutler - a man he suspects might also
be responsible for his wife’s death. Now Miller has
leverage, but unfortunately he also has something
that both Cutler and a villainous fast-food kingpin
are desperate to get hold of. Chuck in a Midsomer
Murders-obsessed hitman, a psychotic welder
and a woman driven over the edge by a wayward
Creme Egg, and Miller is in a mess that even he
might not be able to dance his way out of.
Flippered friends know their place
The penguins popped up
KiwiRail has agreed to the Council pausing the closure
Expressway between Vaila Place and Truscotts Road.
How long the cycleway will remain open for is yet to
Port tours
to return in
January
THE PUBLIC is being offered
a second chance to see what
goes on behind-the-scenes at
Lyttelton’s port.
Following the sell-out bus
tours in July, Lyttleton Port
Company has scheduled a
round of summer tours to see
inside the South Island’s largest
international trade gateway.
The tours in July were the first
time in 15 years the public was
able to see inside the port and
look at the container terminal,
inner harbour operations, cruise
berth and historic dry dock.
The summer tours will run
from January 21-24, with two
buses departing each day at 1pm
and 3pm. Tickets will be $5 a
person.
LPC chief executive Graeme
Sumner said all proceeds from
the tours would go directly to the
Cholmondeley Children’s Centre,
a charity dedicated to supporting
children and families in need.
“The tours in the last week
of January will allow families
to take advantage of a unique
experience by showing them
what we do, especially during the
school holidays,” said Sumner.
The July tours raised more
than $2700 for the children’s
centre.
Student clean-up drive nets
big haul of estuary rubbish
A GROUP OF year 10 students
from Catholic Cathedral College
have been working with the
Estuary Trust to clean up the
shoreline of the estuary.
For 14 consecutive school days,
teacher Wendy Crossen would
arrive every morning with a
different group of 10 students to
collect discarded rubbish from
Bridge St to the end of Southshore
Spit Reserve, a distance of about
five kilometres.
Said Crossan: “Our focus has
been on collecting pieces of
plastic that birds often mistake
for food.
“During this time, we have
collected 16.5 large bags full of
rubbish, including hundreds of
milk bottle lids, straws, lollipop
sticks, beer bottles, McDonald’s
packaging, cans, and other waste.
“As part of this project, we have
learned about specific bird species
and taken a special interest in
helping the godwits survive.”
Estuary Trust manager Tanya
Jenkins said the estuary was a
designated site of international
importance for migratory
waterbirds and the work done by
the students was crucial for its
maintenance.
ECO EFFORTS: For 14
consecutive school days,
students from Catholic
Cathedral College have been
working to clean up the
shoreline of the estuary.
“A total 129 different bird
species reside or migrate via our
estuary which is just amazing
considering this wetland is
surrounded by housing and used
intensively for recreation purpose.
“It has been fabulous to see
this school allowing students
to take a practical approach to
learning about our local natural
environment and how to help
look after it.”
RESILIENCE:
New switching
station strengthens
network
Orion recently marked another milestone in its major works
programme to upgrade its electricity network with the official
opening of the Milton Street Switching Station. The opening was
celebrated with the project’s many partners at an event on the site.
“This programme of work is the largest cable project Orion has
ever undertaken. This section is the first project in a programme
of work to replace older oil-filled power cables in the city. The
switching station allows us to switch between power circuits
meaning that we have alternatives in an outage and can restore
power quicker,” says Orion GM Electricity Network Steve Macdonald.
“They’ve also been designed to carry the capacity needed as
our region continues to evolve and grow.”
On the outside of the new switching station building, artist
Hori-Te-Ariki Mataki from Ariki Creative designed a special
piece of cultural art telling the story of the natural environment
of Ōpāwaho Heathcote River.
Ōpāwaho was also an important travel route connecting
peninsular settlements with Ōtākaro and north to Kaiapoi.
“The inspiration behind the design came from Te Ngāi
Tūāhuriri. Ōpāwaho was an important mahinga kai, or source
of plentiful food, the design incorporates different elements of
flora and fauna, particularly tuna (eels), pātiki (flounder), and
inaka (whitebait),” says Hori.
The Milton Street switching station is a purpose-built, secure
building housing high voltage switchgear and is located next
to Faraday Street. Native trees and shrubs have been planted
around the switching station, to enhance biodiversity on the
site and complement the tukutuku pattern on the building’s
facade. Information boards on the site share the kōrero
behind the artwork.
Work is set to begin in 2025 on the next stage of the project
to upgrade the city’s underground electricity cable, a section
spanning from Milton to Halswell via Hoon Hay.
INVESTMENT:
Investing for
tomorrow, today
Nigel Barbour
The Orion Group
Chief Executive
There has been a lot of talk about our country’s
infrastructure lately. In this rapidly evolving world,
the need for prudent and efficient investment in
our infrastructure has never been more critical.
As an infrastructure provider, we make decisions
in the long-term interest of our customers. What
we do now sets up a positive future for us and for
generations to come.
As we strive to maintain and improve our electricity
network, we are constantly faced with the
challenge of balancing the demands of modern
technology with the reality of increasing costs.
The electricity sector has been under scrutiny,
highlighting the importance of proactive investment
to ensure our network remains safe, reliable, and
resilient. We all rely heavily on electricity and
expect to have it when we need it. It’s essential for
the growth and prosperity of our region that we can
continue to deliver the level of service that you, our
customers, require and expect.
By addressing these challenges head-on, we can
prevent the pitfalls of underinvestment, which
often lead to higher costs and reduced service
quality. We’ve seen this happen across other
infrastructure sectors, as well as electricity. Our
commitment to investing in our network is not
just about meeting current needs but also about
preparing for future demand and ensuring that you
can continue to rely on us.
As signalled previously in our Asset Management
Plan and Annual Report, Orion has been
considering an application for a Customised
Price-quality Path (CPP) with the Commerce
Commission. You may have seen the recent news
about the Commission’s Default Price-quality Path
(DPP) reset, which will result in higher distribution
charges in customer’s power bills from April 2025.
With a CPP, we are looking to increase investment
in our network, over and above the investment
levels allowed by the DPP. We’ve done a lot of
work to test the ability of the DPP allowance to fund
what we need to maintain our network, and it
simply won’t suffice. We’re confident that seeking a
CPP now is the most prudent option for Orion and
our customers, and that delaying this investment
will only mean we have a bigger hill to climb later.
Our journey to get to this point began in the
aftermath of the earthquakes, where our primary
focus was on restoring the network and supporting
the rebuild and recovery. While we were
undertaking substantial repairs to the network,
there were some elements of our normal work
programme that were deferred. That had the effect
of keeping prices down post-earthquakes, however
it does mean we have to get on with that work now.
With the rebuild of the network largely complete
we’re now in a new phase of our asset
management lifecycle, and it has become clear
that the Default Price-quality Path allowances are
not going to be sufficient for us to maintain a safe,
reliable, and resilient network. Underinvesting risks
reducing reliability and resilience, making it more
expensive to manage and maintain the network in
the longer term. By increasing expenditure now,
we aim to preserve the quality of our network,
keep costs manageable, and maintain the level of
service our customers expect.
This is an exciting time for our region. Ōtautahi
Christchurch and Selwyn are seeing considerable
growth, and with that comes increasing prosperity
across our region. Looking ahead, our purpose
remains the same - to provide a safe, reliable,
resilient network that powers a cleaner and brighter
future with our community. We are committed to
proactive investment, which is more cost-effective
and sustainable in the long run.
We’ll continue to keep you updated on our journey
with this CPP application, and what it means for
you. In the meantime, I encourage you to read our
Community Update to find out more about how
we’re continuing to strengthen our network, as well
as embracing technology to drive greater efficiency
in our business. In closing, on behalf of Orion I wish
you a safe and happy holiday season.
What’s a CPP and what
does it mean for me?
Orion funds its operations through debt, equity,
and customer revenue from lines and connection
charges. Orion's customer revenue and the
quality of the service we provide is regulated by
the Commerce Commission using a Default Pricequality
Path (DPP), which sets the total allowable
revenue.
The DPP4 reset, released on 20 November
2024, falls short of the investment forecasted in
Orion's Asset Management Plan (AMP), potentially
impacting the ability to deliver long-term value for
our customers and maintain a safe, reliable, and
resilient network.
The DPP is a one-size-fits-all approach. When the
DPP doesn’t provide enough revenue to meet
customers’ needs, the regulatory process allows
Orion to apply for a Customised Price-quality Path
(CPP). This is a tailored approach that enables
necessary investment, but does mean higher
costs for customers. Applying for a CPP is a
significant effort, requiring us to demonstrate to
the Commerce Commission that the forecasted
investment is necessary and prudent in our
customers’ long-term best interests.
We value your views as a customer on the
Orion network. You can provide feedback on
our Asset Management Plan, which sets out our
investment in the network, from 1 April next year.
In the meantime, you can find out more at
2 Orion Community Update
The drone in action at Norwood
INNOVATION:
Thinking
out of the
box
The old adage that the sky's the limit is
certainly proving true for Orion, with some
innovative use of drone technology.
An automated drone is being used to
monitor the new Norwood substation
located in rural Selwyn. Following over
250 successful trial flights throughout
2023, Orion’s partner, Unmanned Aerial
Vehicle (UAV) supplier Ferntech has
received permission from the Civil Aviation
Authority (CAA) to operate the drone
autonomously at the Norwood site and
for one of our 66,000 volt lines between
substations.
The so-called ‘drone in a box’ launches
from a secure charging station on site,
completes its inspection and then returns
to the station to recharge.
“The work we did in the trial phase
showed we can safely conduct these
operations, so we’re excited to now have
the drone regularly inspecting the site,
which is a first for New Zealand,” says
Orion Network Access Manager Peter
Allen. “The possibilities are limitless with
this technology and we're excited to see
where we can take it next”
The inspections will be overseen by
our UAV supplier Ferntech, from their
remote operations centre in Auckland. All
Ferntech’s commercial UAV operations
are conducted under Part 102 Certification
issued by CAA.
Orion has been using UAV technology for
several years to improve efficiency and
speed with finding faults on the network
and assist with inspecting network assets
in hazardous or inaccessible terrain.
“The use of this technology has so many
benefits, crucially it improves safety and
reduces fatigue for our workers and makes
difficult tasks easier. It also increases our
resilience and reliability by finding faults
before they become a problem, allowing
us to restore power faster. Our operators
can often find a network fault with a drone
in minutes, versus sometimes spending
hours quite literally in the dark,” says Peter.
"Remote, automated drone flights eliminate
many of the risks and costs associated
with traditional inspections. Receiving this
approval from the CAA marks a significant
step forward. This deployment represents
the future of UAV operations, and we're
proud to partner with Orion to enhance
the safety, productivity, and sustainability
of New Zealand's power industry," says
Ferntech General manager Tom Goodwin.
UAV inspections of the Orion Norwood
substation site will be carried out
approximately once a week between
09.00am-05.00pm, weather permitting.
Small talk
and scissor
skills the key
to Georgia’s
success
• By Claire Reid
GEORGIA Winchester
never tires of talking about
the weather, but she’s not a
meteorologist or a weather
reporter – she’s a hairdresser.
Winchester, 20, has worked
at True Grit for four years. As
well as learning the technical
skills, she’s also mastered
the art of small talk. She
knows talking about the weather
is a way to make clients feel at
ease.
“I pretty much talk to every
client about the weather,” she
said.
Earlier this month, Winchester
scooped the Next Generation
Award at the New Zealand Hair
Awards held in Christchurch.
“I was very excited to have
even been picked as a finalist,”
she said. “I didn’t want to get
my hopes up too high about
winning.
“But actually being named
as the winner was a really cool
feeling – a lot of shock and very
happy, very proud.”
Winchester joined the team
at True Grit after taking a sixmonth
hairdressing course at
Ara – following in the footsteps
of her grandmother, who was
also a hairdresser – and falling in
love with the profession.
“I really liked hairdressing
straightaway. I like making
people feel good about themselves
and how they look in the
mirror,” she said.
Four years on, Winchester
will sit her final assessment in
December.
She is now looking to the
future and building on what she
has already achieved.
“I’ll hopefully go up for the
Professional Hairdresser of
the Year in a year – it is open
to hairdressers with more
experience,” she said.
WINNING SMILE: Hairdresser Georgia Winchester won the
Next Generation Award at the New Zealand Hair Awards
and has her sights set on further success.
Understanding Pet Anxiety and How to Help Your Furry Friend
Watching a beloved pet suffer from anxiety can be
heartbreaking. Like us, pets can feel fear and stress, which can
be triggered by one-off events like thunderstorms or fireworks,
or may show up as more generalised anxiety in daily life.
Knowing the signs and how to help can improve their quality
of life and bring peace to your household.
Recognising Anxiety Symptoms
Signs of anxiety in pets can include:
• Excessive Barking or Meowing
• Destructive Behaviour like chewing or digging
• Pacing or Restlessness always on high alert and unable
to settle
• Withdrawing or Hiding
• Increased Clinginess or Avoidance
• Aggression
If you notice any of these symptoms, a visit to your vet is a good
first step. Anxiety symptoms can sometimes overlap with other
health issues, so a professional evaluation can help pinpoint the
cause.
A Team Approach to Treating Anxiety
Helping an anxious pet is often a team effort. At Kowhai Vet
Clinic, we believe a combined approach can make a real
difference.
• The Owner: Owners are essential in observing and
managing their pet’s environment and applying training
techniques at home. Your involvement is key to making
changes that support calmness and confidence.
• The Veterinarian: Your vet can help rule out medical
causes, recommend treatments, and guide you to
additional support when necessary, including behavioural
specialists or medication.
• Behavioural Trainers: Trainers can teach you and your pet
specific techniques to ease anxiety triggers, including
desensitisation exercises (gradually exposing your pet to a
fear-inducing stimulus) and counter-conditioning (helping
your pet associate a positive experience with a previously
negative trigger). These techniques can help pets learn
that certain situations are safe.
• Veterinary Behaviorists: Veterinary behaviourists are
veterinarians with advanced training in animal behaviour
and can offer more advanced guidance for severe cases.
How Our Behaviour Can Influence Pet Anxiety
Many pet owners may not realise that their own behaviour can
inadvertently reinforce their pet’s anxiety. Our responses - such
as providing excessive comfort or reacting anxiously ourselves
- can validate their fears, which may intensify their stress. It’s
natural to want to comfort a pet who seems distressed, but
doing so at heightened moments of anxiety can accidentally
reinforce that stress. In fact, while training techniques for the pet
are essential, learning how to manage our own responses can be
just as impactful. Owners can work with a trainer or behavioural
specialist to learn techniques that encourage confidence and
resilience in their pets. These might include:
• Modelling Calmness: Animals are highly perceptive, and
pets often mirror the energy of those around them.
Projecting calmness can signal to an anxious pet that
all is well.
• Avoiding Over-Attention During Anxiety: While it’s hard
not to comfort a stressed pet, showing extra attention at
anxious moments can reinforce the behaviour. Instead, try
rewarding calm behaviour, so they start associating peace
with positive outcomes.
• Building Positive Associations: Rewarding a pet with
treats or praise during non-stressful moments helps them
associate the environment with positive experiences.
This approach not only benefits your pet but also strengthens
the bond and communication between you.
Practical Tips for Easing Pet Anxiety
Here are a few strategies that may help your pet feel more
secure:
1. Create a Safe Space: Designate a quiet, cosy area for your
pet to retreat to, especially during loud events. Utilise
barriers such as pens, window film and baby gates to give
your pet the option to feel included in the home
environment, without the opportunity to interact with
people or other animals they may be having problems
with.
2. Use Calming Products: Pheromone diffusers, sprays, and
collars can help many pets feel more relaxed.
3. Behavioural Training: Techniques like desensitisation and
counter-conditioning can help pets learn to associate
calmness with anxiety-inducing situations.
4. Regular Exercise and Mental Stimulation: Physical
activity and engaging toys can relieve stress and keep their
minds occupied.
5. Consider Medication When Necessary: In severe cases,
medication may be a helpful supplement to behavioural
training.
It’s OK to Ask for Help
Addressing anxiety is a journey, but with a team approach and
mindful owner involvement, you can make a big difference.
If you’re concerned about your pet’s anxiety, Kowhai Vet Clinic
is here to guide you every step of the way.
Decorate your Christmas tree like a pro
Trimming your tree can be one
of the highlights of the festive
season, but if you’re feeling
daunted by decorations and
bamboozled by baubles, then read
on for our top tips to dress your
tree like a professional.
Choose a theme
Kick things off by choosing
a theme for your tree. This can
be as elaborate or as simple as
you like – from a basic colour
scheme right the way up to a fully
coordinated theme.
Tree time
With an idea in mind for a
theme, it’s time to get your tree
out. If you’ve gone for an artificial
tree, then make sure you fluff
and shape the branches to make
it look as lush and realistic as
possible.
Before you start, put on some
gloves to protect your hands and
then start fluffing the branches
from the inside, working your
way outwards. Tackle the tree in
sections, starting at the bottom
and working your way up – if you
have a taller tree fluff up the top
section before putting it in place.
Light it up
Before you start hanging up
your ornaments, string your
lights; this will make it much
easier later on.
Save yourself some time – and
frustration – by checking your
lights are working before you put
them on.
Start at the bottom of the tree
and weave your way upwards, in
and out of the branches – with
one bulb over the branch and the
next under the branch.
One piece is never enough!
Build up your baubles
Start placing your ornaments
from the top down. It can be
helpful to view your tree in three
sections: top, middle and bottom
and tackle each section on its
own.
Use a mix of large and small
ornaments, that fit your theme,
and place the larger ones deeper
within the branches, while
hanging the smaller ones on the
edges to create a layered look.
To create a balanced-looking
tree, buy your baubles in threes,
sixes, or twelves, and place them
in a gentle curving S or Z shape.
Fill in any gaps with picks or
foliage sprays, which are an ideal
way to add more texture and
fullness.
Add a finally finishing touch
with a festive tree topper and
you’re done!
KFC and Krampus: unusual Christmas
traditions from around the world
With the weather warming up as 25
December approaches, most Kiwis’
Christmas traditions include barbecues,
trips to the beach, days out and picnics.
However, around the world there’s a
whole host of unusual Christmas staples.
Here’s some of our favourite Christmas
traditions from across the globe – maybe
you can incorporate them into your
celebrations this year.
Roller-skating to mass in
Venezuela
Residents of the Venezuelan capital
of Caracas don their roller-skates every
Christmas and roll their way to mass.
Much like us Kiwis, Venezuelans enjoy
warm Christmases, meaning it’s the ideal
time to get your skates on.
Over the years, the tradition has grown
so large that local authorities have been
known to officially close down streets to
allow people to take part.
KFC in Japan
Yep, as weird as it sounds, millions of
people in Japan head to their local KFC to
grab themselves a Christmas Party Barrel
over the festive period.
While, Christmas isn’t widely celebrated
in Japan, this enduring tradition kicked off
back in the 1970s and was boosted by an
ad campaign that proclaimed ‘Kentucky for
Christmas’.
Since then, its popularity has grown, and
now huge queues form outside of KFC
joints throughout Japan during December.
The Christmas Pickle
The origin of the Christmas Pickle
isn’t clear, with some folks believing
it originated in Germany and others
suggesting it was the US or Spain.
Whatever its history, the Christmas
Pickle is widespread and involves hiding
a pickle ornament somewhere on your
Christmas tree with a present for the first
child to find it.
The tradition is so well-loved that you
can now buy Christmas Pickle ornaments
online and in shops across New Zealand.
Get creeped out by the Krampus
in Austria
Most of us our familiar with the sight
of jolly old St Nick at this time of year, but
over in Austria they have a much more
ghoulish character who appears at this time
of year: Krampus.
According to the legend, the Krampus
is a half-man half-goat who is said to
accompany St Nicholas on his visits to
children in December.
While the good boys and girls get
presents from Santa, the naughty kids get
Jim’s in his element at Kite Day
A QUIET hero of the annual
kite-flying event, Jim Nicholls
returns to New Brighton beach
each summer to delight crowds.
The 84-year-old kite-flying enthusiast
and YouTuber said ever
since he started flying – about
15 years ago – he’s encouraged
others to do the same.
“To understand the pleasure
that kites can provide, you need
to actually experience it, so I
encourage as many people as
possible to bring a kite and join
with other fliers – it’s a lot of
fun,” Jim said.
“Unlike some kite festivals,
which are merely spectator
events, Kite Day is open to
participation by anyone. I enjoy
seeing people, especially children,
who don’t usually fly kites
taking part and having a lot of
fun,” said Jim.
Jim has attended all but one
Kite Day since he started flying,
and has amassed a wide array of
kites.
“On Kite Day I try to fly kites
that appeal to children, as it’s
really their day, I feel. I’ve flown
SpongeBob, Mickey Mouse,
teddy bears, and various cartoon
and game characters, as well as
other colourful and attractive
kites, including large octopus
and other sea creatures,” he said.
With the ability to fly large
groups of kites all at once, Jim
puts on a spectacularly colourful
show.
“What kites actually get flown
depends a lot on the wind conditions.
Last Kite Day was probably
the best we’ve ever had, with
sunshine and a steady easterly
breeze all day.”
Great weather conditions also
assisted Jim in achieving his personal
kite-flying record in May
2017, when he flew over 50 smiley
kites on New Brighton beach
to celebrate his 1000th YouTube
kite video.
“It was fun until the time came
to pack them all away,” he says.
Jim’s channel has more than
11,000 subscribers, about 7
million views, and is watched by
people around the world.
“I have made many overseas
friends because of it.”
Kite Day is a free event for
all ages, with entertainment
hosted by The Hits, including
a sandcastle competition. Food
trucks and a kite shop will also
be onsite at the event hub.
• Kite Day will be held on
Saturday, February 1,
from noon to 4pm, at New
Brighton beach,
with the event’s hub
at the car park south of the
New Brighton Pier and the
adjacent beach front
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Bert Herdman and moonlighting at
the Excelsior Lounge’s dance nights
• By Steve McKelvey
YOU MIGHT remember the
rails set in the footpath opposite
today’s Lyttelton Health Centre
on Oxford St. They were used for
transporting bread between the
bakehouse behind the Excelsior
Tearooms and the street. The
rails led down an alleyway and
if you turned left and went up
the external stairs you would
arrive at the Excelsior Lounge,
a second-storey dance and
function hall, very popular from
the 1920s to the 1950s.
Trinity Hockey Club regularly
hosted Saturday night dances in
the Excelsior, starting at 7.30pm,
pausing around 10.30pm for a
supper of sandwiches, cakes, and
a cup of tea, then continuing
until midnight.
Hockey Club founding
member Herbert (Bert) Herdman’s
band The Herdman Fisk
Orchestra was a popular act at
the Excelsior in the early 1930s
– Stan Dwight on tuba, Reg Fisk
as drummer, Horace Barsley
playing trumpet, Ron Brundle
and Dave McFadden playing
saxophone and clarinet, and Bert
himself on piano. The orchestra
had formed around 1929, playing
evenings and weekends at local
dances and functions in Lyttelton,
Christchurch, Timaru and
Greymouth.
Herdman, born 1901, learned
piano as a boy while living in
Ripon St. He sat Trinity College
of Music exams and played at
local City of Norwich Lodge
functions, and for the Holy Trinity
young men’s bible class run
by Dr Charles Upham. He later
became sought after for sports
club dances, sometimes accompanied
by his wife Una as vocalist.
In 1924, he became a concert
pianist for Christchurch radio
station 3YA. Bert did not follow
a professional career in music; he
worked as a shipping agent and
later manager for Holm and Co
Ltd, while moonlighting at the
Excelsior.
For those in Lyttelton wishing
to improve their dancing, there
was no shortage of lessons
available. Una Herdman’s niece
Laurel Sinclair remembers Lylla
Wilman holding lessons in her
parents’ house on the corner of
Exeter and St Davids Sts from
the late 1930s to the early 1940s.
Laurel also remembers a dance
for returning soldiers in uniform
at the RSA hall beside the present
road tunnel entrance in 1946.
As a teenager she played piano,
accompanying local vocalist
Aileen Gilmour at that event.
Miss Ziska Zander’s classes
were in the wide hallway of the
old stone Bank of New Zealand
building. Her father was the
manager of the motor garage
next door, which still stands on
the corner of Norwich Quay and
Dublin St.
If creative dance was something
that interested you, there
was Miss Swaby’s Dance Studio,
accessed by stairs leading down
from behind the counter in her
family’s paint and wallpaper
shop on London St. Once a year,
Miss Swaby’s spectacular dance
show extravaganza with exotic
costumes and innovative props
and lighting was held on stage in
the Harbour Light Theatre.
From the 1920s to the 1950s,
there were dances on every night
of the week in Christchurch. In
the 1940s, the Christchurch Star
ran a regular column ‘Around
the dances’ that advertised the
events of the coming week. Each
had a different theme – Back to
Childhood, Shipwreck, Monte
Carlo – often with competitions,
streamers, balloons, lucky spots,
and sparklers. There was also a
regular Wednesday night dance
in the RSA hall in Lyttelton in
the late 1940s with the Terry
Minson Orchestra often playing.
For a change of venue on
Saturdays, Lyttelton boys would
ride their bicycles over Evans
Pass to the Sumner RSA, where
the Arthur Bierman Band was
playing. Dances at that time were
alcohol-free, although bottles
of beer were hidden in the coal
heap of the adjoining Sumner
gasworks. At midnight, the long
push back up the Sumner hill to
Lyttelton took place.
The Trinity Hockey Club along
with the Trinity Tennis Club,
which had two courts on the
site of the present-day Lyttelton
Recreation Centre, were initially
formed by members of the
Holy Trinity Anglican Church.
Although hockey was played in
Lyttelton from the late 1890s,
the Trinity Hockey Club wasn’t
formed until 1923 – at its peak
it boasted at least 10 teams from
under 15 years to seniors, mostly
competing in Christchurch.
Social events including the
Saturday dances in the Excelsior
with bands like The Herdman
Fisk Orchestra were a large part
of the club activities, but with the
growing popularity of rugby in
the port in the early 1950s, the
club closed and remaining players
joined Christchurch teams.
One of the last bands to play
at the Trinity Hockey Club Excelsior
dances was the Rhythmic
Trio, which included local drummer
Terry Oakley.
The owner of the Norton’s
Buildings, which housed the
Excelsior Lounge dance hall, was
James Talbot Norton (of Norton’s
Premier Egg Preservative fame).
He is also remembered as the
1915 president of the bowling
club on a plaque in Oxford St,
opposite the site of the Excelsior.
The Norton’s building was
demolished following significant
damage in the earthquakes.
Forester obvious backcountry choice
NOW THE elder statesman
of the Subaru NZ family, the
passing years haven’t diminished
the appeal of the latest
generation of the Forester SUV,
the perfect vehicle for active kiwi
lifestyles.
Versatility, practicality, advanced
safety technology and
its go-anywhere AWD provides
owners with the peace-of-mind
and confidence to explore out
back and beyond. Now almost
6-years-old it still remains a
hugely capable and roomy SUV
- it was good enough to win the
2018 NZ Motor Writers Guild
car of the year award, with its
already much-admired symmetrical
AWD. A big safety game
changer for this model back then
was Subaru’s first-ever Driver
Monitoring System.
The system is pure genius
with its ability to set the
preferences of the driver around
those small but important
things, such as the position the
wheel for seat position, door
mirrors, air-conditioning and
some instrument displays,
by using facial recognition
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
technology. Within seconds of
the driver getting behind the
wheel, it recognises them and
automatically adjusts to their
preferences. The system can
register up to five drivers and
greets each of them, and has a
Wandering Gaze Warning. If the
driver continues to look away
from the road ahead the system
warns both passengers and the
driver through a visual and
audio alert.
Its bag of tricks doesn’t end
there. The system can also
detect if the driver is getting
drowsy. Again facial recognition
technology fires off an audible
warning to the driver in what
could be a life saving call.
Drowsiness is detected by
calculating the time ratio the
driver’s eyes are closed. Creating
this innovative technology was
a huge coup for Subaru and a
precursor to how AI is making
our vehicles safer.
Like all vehicles the Forester
has gone up in price. Even its
most affordable iteration the
Sport has raised by $7000 since
2020. Next step up the model
ladder is the $51,990 X-Sport
with its distinctive orange
exterior and cabin accents,
making it the real standout in
the range. Carrying the luxury
model mantle and with ease is
the Premium priced at $56,990.
Hybrid options are offered from
$52,490. For this road test, we
checked out the price leading
Sport, ahead of a larger and
more sophisticated replacement
arriving here in the first half of
2025 (well after it debuted in the
USA last November).
If a long new vehicle warranty
is important to you the Forester
comes up short with a three-year
unlimited warranty, leaving it
languishing behind most of its
competitors, where a five-year
warranty is now the norm.
Under the bonnet is a new but
hardly groundbreaking normally
aspirated 136kw 2.5-litre motor
that continues to adopt Subaru’s
signature horizontally opposed
4-cylinder boxer engine layout.
However, the new motor offers
ample rather an abundance of
performance. It doesn’t take long
behind the wheel to appreciate
what a smooth and refined
motor it is, especially during
open road driving. Engine noise
is well muzzled, although it
sounds thrashy when worked
hard at higher revs, and is a
motor that doesn’t really enjoy
the driver bullying it past the
Rating out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 7; Build Quality
7; Comfort 6; Space 8; Styling 6; Fuel Economy, road test
average consumption 7.6. L/100km; Value for money 8;
Safety, ANCAP 5-star crash test rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7.5
5000rpm mark.
Compared to Subaru flat fours
of old, this one is a major leap
forward and is used on overseas
markets where the next generation
model is sold, where it has
a maximum power output hovering
around the 136kw mark.
Subaru’s have earned plenty of
accolades over the years for their
exceptional low-speed pulling
power, and this version is earning
plenty more. It’s hard working
work ethic in the lower rev is
the key to delivering an effortless
driving over hilly undulating
roads, with brisk acceleration
from standing starts.
The motor drives through a
proven Lineartronic Continuously
Variable Transmission,
isone of the best all-round CVTs
in the mid-sized SUV class. Subarus
have done a fine job refining
this gearbox for over 15 years,
with each new iteration noticeably
better than the one before.
Unlike some CVTs, this one is
smooth, responsive and doesn’t
spiral off into aimless bouts of
high revving. In fact, it’s so good
that most the time it performs as
well if not better than a conventional
automatic.
This Forester is the roomiest,
most versatile yet, with
impressive cabin comfort
and extensive use of quality
materials, while those getting in
and out of the vehicle appreciate
the wide door openings. A larger
and wider cargo area add to
the vehicle’s appeal and loadcarrying
credentials.
There’s plenty of evidence
that cabin has been designed
and equipped with driver and
passengers in mind. A couple
of ‘for instances’ are two rear
fast-charging USB ports and a
faster-operating, powered rear
tail gate – almost twice as quick
as the previous model. There is
plenty of in-cabin convenience
and entertainment in the form
of Apple CarPlay and Google
Android Auto connectivity.
The suspension in unison with
the symmetrical AWD offers
confident and reassuring road
hold on a raft of different road
surfaces, typically in this neck
of the motoring woods. With
its balance, poise and agility the
Forester is hard to ignore if you
are in the market for an excellent
all round mid-sized SUV, and
thrives in our confronting
driving conditions. The ride
tends to become a bit fidgety over
high frequency bumps opening
the door for some unwelcome
suspension noise.
A class leading 220mm of
ground clearance means you
will be going off road in places
that other SUV would not even
contemplate. This, together with
the Foresters X-Mode system to
manipulate the AWD, means
you are in a vehicle with genuine
cross-country capabilities that
open up new adventures in outof-the-way
places.
Meet your mortgage adviser
Antonia McAtamney
Antonia can help potential buyers get the right finance in
place and secure the property they want whether they are
first home buyers, investors or owner-occupiers moving
home. Exposing your property to a pool of educated, and
where possible, pre-approved purchasers, who are ready to
make an offer or bid, increases the likelihood of getting your
home sold and settled on time and at the right price.
Antonia can even assist you with your own home
finance options. As one of the largest home finance
brokerages in Australasia, Loan Market enjoys
industry links and contacts that mean they are
better placed to negotiate on your behalf with
major banks and secure lenders. They may even be
able to find you a better deal with your own bank.
