Louis Day caught up with<br />

the veteran shift manager<br />

Where did you grow up?<br />

I was born in Lyttelton<br />

and grew up there. I went to<br />

Lyttelton West School and then<br />

Hagley High School. I moved to<br />

Governors <strong>Bay</strong> about 22 years<br />

ago.<br />

Tell me about your family.<br />

I come from a large Lyttelton<br />

family. I am one of seven kids,<br />

my father worked on the wharf<br />

for the Lyttelton <strong>Harbour</strong> Board<br />

as a crane driver. My mother<br />

died when I was a young kid. I<br />

am married to Rita, who is the<br />

school secretary at Lyttelton<br />

Primary School, and I have got<br />

a daughter Anita who works at<br />

Ferrymead Pharmacy. I also have<br />

a son Alex.<br />

Alex works in communications<br />

alongside me, he is on a different<br />

watch but he works in there.<br />

Both Anita and Alex are also<br />

volunteer firefighters like myself<br />

in Governors <strong>Bay</strong>. Anita has been<br />

a volunteer for six years and Alex<br />

has been one for three years.<br />

What has been your biggest<br />

challenge?<br />

Probably the harder times<br />

were during the earthquakes.<br />

I was on duty for four of the<br />

five big earthquakes in the<br />

communications centre. The<br />

February one was one of the first<br />

times we were under-resourced<br />

because of the number of jobs<br />

we had. When we dispatched<br />

fire crews to jobs most fire<br />

crews were stopped or flagged<br />

down when responding so they<br />

never got to the jobs they were<br />

contemporary dispatched to. It was one of the<br />

first times we used a system<br />

called ‘taxi-ranking’, where we<br />

that the Fire Service resources,<br />

being fire crews and engines and<br />

all that sort of stuff, respond in a<br />

timely fashion to any emergency<br />

in the South Island and to<br />

provide technical back up should<br />

any crews require it.<br />
