Reporter Matt Salmons caught up with the keen surfer, snowboarder and man of the cloth Tell me about where you were born and grew up? I was born here in Christchurch and grew up in Spreydon area. I attended Hoon Hay Primary, Manning Intermediate and Hillmorton High School. Spreydon was great, most of my group of friends either lived around the corner or out in Halswell. So I was on my bike most days, biking around the place with them. We had Spreydon Domain down the road where we would play football and all the schools I attended were walking distance so it was a very easy place to get around when I was young. Where do you live now? Sumner. I moved into here when I moved back from Australia’s Sunshine Coast at the age of 23. Living near the beach was a non-negotiable for me. In my role, it is really important to live locally to everyone that your rubbing shoulders with on a day-to-day basis. This creates consistency in the life of the community, It gives you perspective of certain needs in the local community that you might never see if your driving in and out every day, and creates genuine relationships because you’re just doing mundane and fun things in life together instead of the formal side that can very easily take over in roles like mine. What was the transition to Sumner like? There is a great crew of locals around my age in Sumner that made the change very easy. They’re legends. What’s your family like? My family are very mellow. We grew up camping around Christchurch and New Zealand on our family holidays. Our house growing up was a centre point for a lot of our friends, so it was common for us to always have big meals with a lot of people together. I think that shaped why my brothers, sister and I focus more on creating experiences with people, which then creates great friendships and relationships. Do you have any hobbies? I enjoy most things. The small things like mowing a lawn, surfing or snowboarding, hanging with my mum and dad, friends, food. New Zealand is a beautiful place. My dad’s into surfing, so that’s how I got into it. I like that both surfing and snowboarding let me hang out with my mates, meet new people and have fun while doing it. Have you ever travelled for surfing or snowboarding? Yes, I’ve been to Sri Lanka for a month, Indonesia for a month, Mexico, the United States, Hawaii, Fiji, Australia and the North Island. Oh, and Canada, we went to Canada to snowboard. I’ve always gone with a group of mates. I couldn’t say which was my favourite place, they all bring their own flavour really. Have you always have a strong connection to your faith growing up? I started the journey of trying to figure out what a strong faith looks like from the age of 20. Let’s use a tricycle metaphor. Some people might disagree with this, but everyone leads and makes decisions from their experience. So referring to the tricycle, your experience is the front wheel. The back two wheels could be tradition, reason, creation or scripture since we are talking about faith. I kept an ongoing journey of exploring my faith and who God is because there were too many experiences in my mundane life that I couldn’t put down to coincidence. That would just be boring. So, if everyone leads from their experience, then the experiences in my life have kept me on a trajectory towards the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit. I have We will deliver! I think for everyone to have a healthier well-being, people need to work less. How did you get the position you have? I had moved over to Australia to a place called Mudjimba on Queensland’s Sunshine Coast when I was 21. I was working as a barista in a surf shop. We had a bunch of local groms that I had the privilege of taking surfing or skating on a weekly basis, as well as heading into the local schools to help wherever needed. I did that for about two years before I was asked to come back to Christchurch and do the same in Sumner. I’d actually got an email which I didn’t see for months. He thought I’d be perfect for the role. I thought about it for a while, but in the end, I decided to do it. He wasn’t surprised that it took me so long to respond. You know what it’s like, everyone’s a bit useless in communicating. What was your first sermon like? I’ve done a few talks up the front, my first one was an absolute shocker. I mumble quite a bit so I’m not too sure if anyone ever understood what I was saying. Our new vicar Thomas is a phenomenal speaker so he has given me a few tips but also encourages me to bring my flavour in whatever I am saying. What is your favourite part of being a youth pastor? I’ve got many favourite parts in my role, but to put one down on paper, that would be witnessing and being a part of a youth community. Part of something where young people are serving and investing in Showers at Wholesale Prices other young people. Creating friendships, memories and experiences through every day life stuff and activities they love like surfing, skating, snowboarding and mountain biking. Because of this, when there are hard times young people have multiple people in their life that they can turn to for help and know someone is willing and happy to sit and listen to what is happening in their life. That is actually one of my favourite things in my life in general. What’s the hardest part? One of the hardest things is to always have an understanding of every situation. As we get older we think more logically than emotionally, but young people are led by their emotions and experiences the majority of the time. It is so important to listen and learn to have a deep understanding of young people’s situations, instead of thinking we know best or assuming the right outcome for a situation. Listening to everyone will always be something that is hard. The calf was not shy as passengers, including two school groups, spotted it and its mother around 11.30am on Wednesday. Black Cat Cruises skipper Julian Yates said it was “really wonderful” to see the newborn calf. “Especially as it approached us with its mother while we sat with our engines switched off. “We should now start seeing more Hector’s dolphin calves during the next couple of months, along with baby seals who are being born around now and should appear in the next three to four weeks.” Hector’s dolphins head to the sheltered waters of Akaroa Harbour to give birth during their breeding season, making it important for boaties to act accordingly. The dolphins only give birth every three to four years, meaning a slow recovery rate for the endangered species. •From page 1 “I think it’s important for them [the pupils] to have a part in that.” Mrs McInerney said work would likely continue into December as the remaining admin block and classrooms were demolished.
