Luck of the Irish seals win for Bays
• By Gordon Findlater
CENTRAL DEFENDER Ciaran
Aherne’s first ever league double
has put Ferrymead Bays in
the driver’s seat to become the
first club to win five Mainland
Premier League titles.
The Irish 33-year-old scored a
goal in both halves during Bays’
2-1 win over Nelson Suburbs in
Nelson on Sunday.
His second goal came in the
final minute of the game and
could prove decisive in the team’s
hunt for their fifth MPL title.
“All the lads were on my back
celebrating, but the celebrations
didn’t last that long because there
was three minutes of extra time
left,” said Aherne.
“Being a central defender, they
usually don’t let me past the half
way line and they let me know
about it if I do, he said.
“Our coach Danny Halligan
is usually screaming at me to get
back if it happens.”
The defender moved to
Christchurch from Ireland
six years ago and is in his
second stint with the club after
taking a season off due to work
commitments.
The game was his first in more
than two months, making a
return to the field after being out
for 10 weeks with a groin injury.
Aherne’s first goal was a
well-placed header from a cross.
WINNER: Ciaran Aherne celebrates his match-winning goal
and his first MPL double.
However, his next goal, the most
important of the game, wasn’t as
glamorous.
“It was a bit of a scramble.
There were about six players
going for it, there were arms and
legs and all sorts. I just managed
to get my head on it,” said
MPL standings:
1. Cashmere Technical,
46pts
2. Ferrymead Bays,
44pts
3. Coastal Spirit, 33pts
Aherne.
“It could have gone any way.
We got the luck of the Irish I
suppose.”
The win means the equation
is now simple
for Bays: Win
their last three
games and the
title is theirs.
They are
now two
points behind
competition
leader
Cashmere
Technical.
However,
Cashmere have
just two games
remaining.
Bays came into the latest round
of the MPL in second place, five
points behind Cashmere.
They can thank Coastal Spirit
for defeating Cashmere 2-0 to
win the Hurley Shield at Garrick
Park on Saturday.
Their run to the end of the
season is not an easy one.
Bays will play Universities, who
are fighting to avoid relegation,
on Friday night.
They then have a
short turnaround
before hosting
third placed Nelson
Suburbs on Sunday.
Their final
game of the season
is against bottom of
the table Western
who are likely to
require a win to
avoid relegation.
“We’re probably
still the underdog
in it because we play two teams
in a relegation battle who will be
fighting tooth and nail to win.
We know we have a huge job on
our hands,” said Aherne.
Bays and Cashmere have both
won four MPL titles.
