Fashion, f lare
& fierce ideas
Morgan-Lee Bam is already turning heads – not only for what she’s
wearing, but for what she’s making happen behind the seams. With an
eye for style, a love of statement silhouettes, and a hands-on approach to
everything from fabric picks to photoshoots, this rising trendsetter is carving
out her space in the fashion world … one chic outfit at a time.
Text: RIALIEN FURSTENBERG. Image: WILLEM BOTHA.
While most teens are stressing about
TikTok trends and trig tests, 17-yearold
Morgan-Lee Bam is busy building
a fashion empire from her lounge.
One minute she’s approving fabric
swatches with her mom, the next
she’s juggling online orders. Oh. And
she’s also in matric.
From matric learner to
haute couture
It all started three years ago, when
Morgan-Lee was still walking the
corridors of high school, daydreaming
not about parties, but about puff
sleeves and power suits. The spark?
Watching her mom, Maritza Bam, run
her own clothing brand.
“That’s really where the love for
fashion developed. I didn’t exactly
plan to start a brand at that age, but
once I started playing around with
designs and fabrics, it just clicked.
Fashion felt like home.
”Her very first online launch included
just 10 garments – and though small,
it was mighty. That collection marked
the start of something beautiful.
And then there’s the name – Boslief.
It’s playful. It’s proudly South African.
And it’s full of heart.
“In Afrikaans, boslief means sweetheart
or darling. It felt like something our
customers could connect with,
familiar, local, and warm.”
It’s also a subtle nod to her love of the
bushveld, where nature, simplicity,
and quiet beauty reflect the essence
she hopes to bring to each design.
12 Get It Magazine July 2025
One girl boss, one glam mom
Morgan-Lee may run the show, but
she’s got her mom right by her side -
her biggest supporter, go-to sounding
board, and all-around wingwoman.
“Working with my mom is amazing.
We’re so similar but also totally
different … which weirdly works. You
learn a lot about someone when you’re
building a brand together!”
It’s a partnership built on trust,
late-night chats, lots of coffee and a
shared love for creating something
meaningful. And it gets even
better. Her mom also models the
Boslief pieces.
“It’s so special seeing my mom wear
the pieces we’ve worked so hard on.
She’s beautiful, and she just gets the
brand. Plus, it shows that Boslief is truly
for women of all ages.”
Fashion with a purpose
In a world bursting with fast fashion
and fleeting trends, Boslief is
something refreshingly different.
“We design for women who want to
feel confident, comfortable, and classy.
Our style is all about statement and
timelessness. We don’t follow trends.
We want to create pieces that stay
beautiful and relevant. Today, next year,
and beyond.
Think classic silhouettes, quality fabrics,
and effortless flair. Whether you’re on
safari, running errands, or heading to
a glam event, a Boslief piece should
make you feel like you … just a little
bit elevated.”
Her fave part of the process? The
creative bits, of course.
“I love curating the designs and
figuring out which fabrics will bring
them to life. We go for quality over
quantity. Always.”
Creative director. Stylist.
Slay queen.
But fashion design is only half of what
she does. Morgan-Lee also wears
the hats of creative director, stylist,
shoot producer, and content curator.
Sometimes all in the same day.
She plans and styles Boslief’s
photoshoots, books photographers,
scouts venues, coordinates hair
and makeup, and directs the
entire aesthetic.
“I love the creative chaos of shoot days,”
she says, clearly in her element. “It’s a
Soft, snug and feminine — this rib-knit
dress hugs in all the right places with
gentle stretch and all-day comfort. The
off-shoulder neckline, waist-defining fit
and subtle slit bring just the right touch
of elegance. Style with boots by day,
heels by night. Image: RDK Photography.
Hair: Antoinette de Beer, EA Academy.
lot of planning, but seeing it all come
together is the best feeling.”
Her hands-on approach ensures
Boslief’s look and feel are consistent,
considered, and completely true to the
brand’s ethos.
Business plans & school notes
Let’s not forget, Morgan-Lee is still
in high school. While her classmates
stress about finals, she’s managing
orders, planning shoots, and answering
customer queries.
“It’s a balancing act, for sure,” she
laughs. “But homeschooling definitely
helps me juggle everything better.
I get to plan my days around both
Boslief and my studies.”
And she’s not slowing down anytime
soon. Her future plans include
studying child law, psychology, or
business law. Fields that connect
with both her interest in people and
her entrepreneurial spirit. “Whatever
I choose, I’ll keep growing Boslief
alongside it.”
The grit behind the glam
Behind the dreamy photos and
polished pieces, there’s a real
challenge. Being taken seriously.
“People sometimes assume that
because I’m young, I can’t possibly
know what I’m doing. But I’ve learnt
to use that doubt as motivation. I’m
not here to prove anything. I’m here to
build something.”
One of her biggest mindset shifts
came from reading High Performance
by Jake Humphrey and Prof
Damian Hughes.
“It really changed how I think. It helped
me realise that I can conquer anything
– if I put in the work and believe
in myself.”
Quiet strength, big vision
Despite her confident presence as
an up-and-coming businesswoman,
Morgan-Lee describes herself as “quiet
and reserved … but with a sharp sense
of humour.” And if you know her, you’ll
know that’s spot on.
Her personal style? “Comfortable, but
still classy. Off-the-shoulder knitwear
is a staple. And I’m hoping low-rise
jeans never make a comeback. (Same,
girl. Same.)
She’s inspired by brands like Ukraine’s
Miss Diamond, known for their strong,
feminine designs and attention to
detail. But her ultimate goal?
“To help women of all ages feel
amazing in what they wear. Clothing
isn’t just something we throw on. It’s
a form of self-expression. It should
mean something. It should make you
feel powerful.”
Advice from a young
trailblazer
For other young dreamers out there,
Morgan-Lee keeps it real. “Go all in!
Chase those dreams and work hard
for them. Just know, not everyone will
cheer you on. And that’s okay. You’re
not here to please everyone. Stay true
to why you started.”
Her go-to mantra? “All waves eventually
pass. Every challenge, no matter how
tough, is temporary.”
As Morgan-Lee balances textbooks
with textiles, one thing’s clear. She’s
not just stitching together a brand
– she’s tailoring a legacy. With quiet
confidence, fearless ambition, and
a wardrobe full of bold moves, she’s
turning the fashion world into her own
personal runway.
Watch this space … her best looks are
still to come.

Manufacturing and Technical Manager at Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) – South Africa
Khethelo Maphalala
Khethelo Maphalala leads with a focus on quality, people, and performance. He emphasises scientific
quality assurance, operational discipline, and leadership that empowers teams, all while preparing for a
future where AI and human collaboration will shape manufacturing excellence.
Khethelo has a dual background in mechanical
engineering and finance. His professional journey
has spanned roles in packaging engineering,
private equity, and supply chain technology
before taking on his current position, where he
leads manufacturing operations for one of the
country’s most high-profile beverage companies.
Khethelo believes that working for Coca-Cola
demands a global standard of excellence. “If you
are the operator at a filling machine, you should
be trying to be the number one operator in the
world because you are filling the number one
brand in the world,” he said.
This mindset is reflected in how teams are
developed and performance is measured.
According to Khethelo, striving to be number
one drives growth at both individual and
organisational levels. “If we hire the right people
and invest in them properly, they deliver the best
performance, and that performance ensures
customer satisfaction and protects our market
share.”
Product quality is a core part of his mandate.
Khethelo distinguishes between quality control
and quality assurance, preferring the latter
for its focus on systems that build long-term
confidence.
“Our job is to make sure that the products
we produce tomorrow will meet customer
requirements. That requires a scientific approach.
We need to empower our quality specialists,
especially microbiologists, to apply their training –
not just do admin.”
In his view, modern manufacturing requires more
than firefighting. “We need to move away from
breakdown management and towards focused,
continuous improvement,” he said.
Drawing comparisons with routine car
maintenance, Khethelo emphasises
standardisation and preventative maintenance
as essential elements of a reliable production
environment. “We expect our cars to work
because we drive them consistently and service
them on schedule. The same logic should apply
to factory equipment.”
On sustainability, Khethelo frames environmental
responsibility as an operational efficiency
issue. “Less waste and better energy and water
usage ratios naturally reduce environmental
impact,” he said. But he also stresses the
social and governance aspects of ESG. “We
focus on diversity in teams and promoting
from within. Governance is binary – you’re
either compliant or not – but inclusion and
operational efficiency take ongoing effort.”
Khethelo’s view is that leadership must
balance high expectations with support. “My
style is to define the end goal and let
people find the path – but
the key is adapting your
approach to fit the person
you’re leading.”
Looking ahead, he sees
the rise of AI-human
collaboration as a
defining trend. “Jobs
won’t be taken by
AI, but by people
who use AI. We
need to ensure
our people
are equipped
to keep pace
with this shift.”
For young
professionals,
his advice is
simple: “Excel
where you
are. That’s
what gets you
noticed. Just
deliver in your
current role.”

Human Resources Business Partner at Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) – South Africa
Willie van Wyk
ADVERTORIAL
Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) has been named a Certified Top Employer, recognised for
its inclusive culture, leadership development, and commitment to employee growth, wellbeing, and
sustainability offering more than just jobs, but purpose-driven career opportunities.
Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa (CCBSA) has officially
been recognised as a Certified Top Employer, a prestigious
accolade that reflects the company’s commitment to
building a dynamic, inclusive, and future-ready workplace.
“Being recognised as an Employer of Choice is a reflection
of our commitment to building an inclusive, developmental
culture – a place where people want to join, stay, grow, and
build careers,” said Willie van Wyk, Human Resources Business
Partner at CCBSA. “It’s a positive reflection of how we support
our people and create opportunities.”
The Top Employer certification is awarded following a
rigorous evaluation by the Top Employers Institute, which
assesses companies based on their people practices.
According to Willie, CCBSA’s successful certification stems
from its ‘People First’ strategy, which emphasises leadership
development, employee wellbeing, and equal opportunity.
Key initiatives that led to the recognition include CCBSA’s
comprehensive employee engagement surveys. These
are conducted annually, completely anonymously, and
help identify areas for improvement across the business.
“These surveys help us understand how our employees feel
and where we can improve,” said Willie. “We then turn that
feedback into real, actionable change.”
The company also boasts strong leadership development
and career growth programmes. From mentorship to
monthly performance conversations and structured
development plans, employees are encouraged to grow
professionally. “We offer more than just a job – we offer
purpose and long-term career paths,” Willie expressed. This
includes opportunities for international mobility and access
to education for employees and even their children.
Diversity and inclusion remain central to CCBSA’s HR strategy.
More than half of the company’s leadership roles are filled
by women – a point of pride for Willie. “We aim to reflect the
communities we serve,” he said. “Whether it’s in major cities or
small towns like Kuruman, we are committed to developing
local talent.”
Despite challenges – including aligning national strategies
with local conditions across wide regions like the Free State,
North West, and Northern Cape – CCBSA has maintained high
engagement through robust planning and communication.
“We rely on strong leadership and ethical decision-making to
guide us,” Willie explained.
The road ahead, according to him, includes preparing the
workforce for rapid technological shifts. “We must align our
people strategy with emerging trends, especially around
digital skills and artificial intelligence,” he said. “Our youth
development programmes are key to building a workforce
ready for the future.”
Willie added that sustainability remains a top priority –
from environmental practices like water conservation and
recycling to broader social impact. “We aim to refresh Africa
every day, not only through our products, but by building
stronger communities.”
He concluded: “Our goal is to be the most admired company
in Africa. That starts with serving our customers and
communities with integrity, passion, and a relentless focus on
doing the right thing.”

Cola Beverages South Africa, Gareth
Brandon, is a logistics veteran with a
mission to transform supply chains
across Africa.
With 24 years in the field, 23 spent
within the Coca-Cola system, his
journey began as a teenager, inspired
by his father’s delivery business. “My
father ran a logistics company between
Johannesburg and Durban for 18 years,”
he recalls. “My brother and I worked as
truck helpers during school holidays
from age 13. That exposure pushed me
to follow in his footsteps.”
For Brandon, logistics drives economic
growth. “Logistics can be a significant
growth enabler for businesses in Africa
by enhancing supply chain efficiency,
reducing costs and delivery time,
and increasing access to markets,”
he explains. Streamlined operations
and technology adoption are key to
unlocking Africa’s trade potential.
Logistics also shapes corporate
reputation. “Ensuring on-time deliveries
with accurate tracking, handling
products with care, and offering flexible
delivery options builds customer
satisfaction and trust,” Brandon
says. Aligning with brand values
requires sustainability standards and
transparency. “By integrating brand
values into logistics, companies can
enhance their reputation and create a
competitive advantage,” he notes.
Brandon champions Coca-Cola’s “Zero
is Possible” philosophy. “Zero harm. Zero
fatalities. Zero compromise when it
comes to the safety of our people and
communities,” he states. Achieving this
involves optimised processes, AI, data
analytics, and collaboration. “Crossfunctional
collaboration and strict risk
management are key to mitigating risks,”
he adds.
Sustainability is central to his work. “We
focus on reducing carbon emissions
through route optimisation and
lowering fuel consumption,” Brandon
says. He sees AI-driven tools and
warehouse systems revolutionising
African logistics. “These innovations can
optimise routes, predict demand, and
reduce waste, delivering efficiencies and
cost savings,” he predicts.
Despite challenges in Africa’s logistics
environment, including poor road
conditions, complex regulations, and
slow technology adoption, Brandon
remains optimistic. “Investment in
infrastructure, streamlined regulations,
and digitalisation can make the sector
more efficient and competitive,”
he suggests. Emerging trends – AI,
e-commerce, and eco-friendly practices
– offer opportunities. “Companies
must embrace these trends to
stay competitive,” he advises.
Brandon’s advice to young
professionals is practical:
“Add value through
problem-solving, stay
curious, and embrace
technology. Build
resilience and strong
relationships.” He
values integrity
and decisiveness,
urging
newcomers to “start
at the bottom, be open
to learning, and you’ll
set yourself up for
success.”
Collaboration fuels his
success. “Partnerships
enable improved
efficiency, innovation,
and economies of scale,”
he says, citing third-party
logistics and industry
associations as examples.
His vision is clear: “My vision
is efficient supply chains with a
strong emphasis on sustainability
and innovation.” Leading by example,
Brandon is shaping Africa’s logistics
future.

Commercial District Manager at Coca-Cola Beverages Africa (CCBA) – South Africa
Amos Ngobe
Commercial District Manager at Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa, is
driving local economic growth through innovative thinking and sustainable partnerships.
ADVERTORIAL
Reflecting on his journey as
Commercial District Manager at
Coca-Cola Beverages South Africa
(CCBSA), Amos Ngobe shares that
seeing their customers achieve
ongoing success is what motivates
him, as it affirms they are heading in
the right direction.
“Seeing the customers we have
helped and developed, today
owning a supermarket is rewarding.
There are guys who started as
hawkers, we came into their lives
helped with the trade applications
and the necessary skills to manage a
business. Now that person has a fully
operational supermarket.”
Ngobe emphasised that prioritising
their customers has played a crucial
role in their business strategy. He
noted that involving customers
in the planning phase fosters a
sense of partnership, which in turn
encourages more innovative ideas.
“So what we’re doing now is that
instead of sitting alone in my office,
I go to the customer and together
we develop a joint business plan.
I give my input, the customer
does the same, and then together
we formulate an execution plan,”
Ngobe mentioned.
For Ngobe and his team, involving
customers in the planning phase is
just the beginning. He explains that
they also support their customers by
providing them with the essential
training needed to successfully
run their outlets. According to him,
“we always align our commercial
objectives with our customers’
needs. That simply means that our
marketing programmes are tailored
to our customers’ marketing needs.
We also have a huge investment
in developing the local market.
For example, we have Grow My
Business, where we empower small
outlets with the necessary skills and
knowledge on how to operate their
business. We also provide signatures
for their outlets and place coolers as
well.”
Given how competitive the market is,
Ngobe mentions how important it is
to stay ahead of their competition by
initiating innovative strategies. “I have
seen the rise of digital integration
in informal trade. So, what we have
done is establish WhatsApp ordering.
So our customers can easily place
an order on WhatsApp, and in 10
minutes the order will be captured,
they would then receive an order
number and a date of delivery,” he
also touches on how important it is
to build and maintain trust with their
customers by establishing methods
to keep them happy. “We have also
upsized our cans from 400ml to
500ml without a price increase for
the consumer.
While discussing their marketing
campaigns, Ngobe shared a
recent campaign that was
warmly received across the
country, bringing smiles
to many faces, saying “the
Share a Coke campaign
really brought a lot of
excitement in the
market, it showed
real engagement
from people.
You would
get people
rushing to
outlets to
purchase
the Coke
that has
their
name.
Social
media has
also played a
huge role as more people post with the cans
that have their names.”

A feast with friends or dinner à deux ... we’ve got you covered.
Compiled by: KYM ARGO
Aubergine and courgette parmigiana with Spier’s 21 Gables Pinotage
If you’ve non-meat eating guests joining
you for dinner or a braai, this is a brilliant
option ... one that doesn’t skimp on
richness or flavour? Think roasted tomato
sauce, roasted veggies, and glorious
melted cheese ... this parmigiana delivers
all the comfort of lasagne or pizza, without
the gluten and meat. Serves four to six.
You’ll need: 30-45ml olive oil (plus extra), 2
medium-large aubergines, cut into 1cm
slices, with end stubs removed, 400g
courgettes, cut in half lengthways and
trimmed, salt & pepper to taste, 2 or 3
cloves garlic, finely grated, 660ml tomato
passata, 30ml (2 Tbsp) tomato paste, 5ml
(1 tsp) dried origanum, 10ml (2 tsp) sugar;
2 to 3 cups grated mozzarella cheese, 1
cup grated parmesan cheese, fresh basil
leaves for serving
To make: Heat the oven to 220°C. Brush
a large baking sheet (or 2 medium
sheets) with oil, then arrange the slices
of aubergines and courgettes in a
single layer.
Brush the vegetables lightly with more oil,
season with salt & pepper, then roast for
about 15 minutes until soft and the edges
start to brown slightly. Remove from the
oven and set aside.
In the meantime, add 30ml of olive oil and
garlic in a medium pot over medium heat,
stirring for a minute.
Add the passata, paste, origanum and
sugar, and season with salt & pepper,
stirring. Bring to a simmer and cook for 10
minutes, then remove from the heat and
set aside.
Lower the oven to 200°C.
To assemble, place a layer of roasted
vegetables in the bottom of a deep
medium oven dish, top with half the sauce
and half the mozzarella and parmesan,
then repeat with a second layer of
everything, ending with parmesan. Bake
for 20 to 25 minutes until golden brown
and bubbling. Remove and serve hot,
scattered with fresh basil leaves.

The wine ...
With a robust bouquet of violet intermingling with ripe blackberries
and cherries and accented with graphite notes, Spier’s 21 Gables
Pinotage is a match made in heaven for the robust flavours of this
Parmigiana. On the palate, it mirrors the dish’s decadence with its
full-bodied nature, generous ripe Black Forest cake-like flavours,
and velvety, dense tannins for a surprisingly opulent finale. R400

Skillet-fried chateaubriand with truffled aioli and sage-salted fries with Spier’s 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon
The wine ...
With this dish, we’d serve the 21 Gables Cabernet Sauvignon, a classic and
perfect with the richness of the steak. With a sumptuous, aromatic profile
of cassis and violet with a hint of cedar and pencil lead, this full-bodied and
concentrated wine has a smooth finish, making it a perfect match for this
exceptional dish. R400 a bottle from spier.co.za
Prime steak like Chateaubriand calls for
a touch of culinary finesse. With this
in mind, the preparation of this dish
has been kept simple, allowing the
excellent flavour of the meat to take
centre stage. This is the perfect dish for
a shared celebration meal for two.
You’ll need:
For the aioli: 2 XL egg yolks, 10ml Dijon
mustard, 1 small garlic clove, a few
drops of truffle oil, 30ml (2 Tbsp) fresh
lemon juice (or apple cider vinegar), a
pinch of salt, about 100ml canola oil
For the sage-salted fries: 30ml (2 Tbsp)
salt flakes, 3 to 4 sage leaves, finely
chopped, 2 to 3 cups oven-bake potato
fries, cooked to your liking, for serving
For the steaks: About 500 to 600g
mature Chateaubriand steak at room
temperature, 60ml butter, 2 to 3 sprigs
thyme, 1 clove garlic, bruised
To make: Start with the aioli. Add the
yolks, mustard, garlic, truffle oil, lemon
juice, and salt to a cup that fits a stick
blender. Blend briefly with a stick
blender, then add the oil in a thin
stream while blending continuously.
Continue mixing and adding the oil
until you have a thick mayonnaise.
In a pestle & mortar or small blender,
blend the salt and sage until you have
a pale green herb salt. Set aside. Before
serving with the steak, bake your fries
until golden brown, then season with
the sage salt as soon as they come from
the oven.
Preheat the oven to 180°C.
Use kitchen string to tie the steak into
a neat thick round so it doesn’t flap
open, then season both sides with salt
and pepper.
Heat a skillet to the smoking point, add
the butter and thyme and immediately
add the steak. Char on each side until
crusty (about 3 minutes a side), then
carefully transfer the skillet to the oven
to cook for 7 to 10 minutes, depending
on your preference.
Remove from the oven and transfer
the steak to a plate for resting at least
10 minutes before slicing and serving.
Serve hot with the sage-salted fries and
aioli on the side.

Take one
rotisserie chicken ...
When you’re late home from the office. When you’ve unexpected guests. Heck, when
you just can’t be bothered fussing ... a rotisserie chicken is a life saver. Dinner’s served!
Compiled by: Kym Argo and megan brett
Chicken pie
A chicken pie without any fuss. The family will ask for this on repeat again and
again. Serve with a green salad, or petits pois and corn kernels. Easily serves four,
or six if there are young children at the dinner table.
You’ll need: One rotisserie chicken, (skin and bones set aside), meat shredded
into bite size pieces. One packet each of portabellini mushrooms and button
mushrooms, sliced. Two large white onions, or one onion and equal parts leeks,
chopped. 4 tablespoons butter. 250ml chicken stock - home made is best, but
a cube is fine. 250ml fresh cream. Four heaped tablespoons each of butter and
flour. Two teaspoons each fresh thyme leaves and rosemary (stalks removed,
roughly chopped), or three-quarters of a teaspoon each of dried. Salt and pepper
to taste. One packet store bought phyllo pastry, and an egg yolk mixed with
a tablespoon milk to make a wash.
To make: Pre-heat your oven to 180 deg.
Melt the butter in a large pan, and gently fry the onions and leeks until soft. Fry
the mushrooms in the same pan until lovely and browned. Once veggies are
cooked, add the chicken stock and cream, and bring to a simmer.
Make a roux with the butter and flour, add to the pan and stir until thickened.
Add your shredded chicken, and spoon everything into an oven proof dish.
Cover with phyllo pastry, brush with the egg yolk and milk mixture, and make a
few slits in the top of the pie. You can, if you feel like going fancy, decorate the
top with extra pastry.
Bake for 20 minutes, or until pastry is golden brown.
Don’t waste those bones!
Home-made chicken stock tastes incredible ... and it’s so easy. Every time you
have a whole chicken, roasted or rotisserie, keep the bones and make stock,
which you can then pop into the freezer for when you need.
When you’ve removed the meat from the bones of your rotisserie chicken, put
the bones and skin into a heavy based saucepan along with one peeled and
quartered onion, three carrots, unpeeled and chopped into big chunks, two
stems celery, with the leaves, a couple of parsley springs and half a tablespoon
of black peppercorns. You can add one or two bay leaves, if you have on hand.
Cover completely with water - three litres should do it. Bring to the boil, then
turn down heat and gently simmer for an hour before checking ... it should have
reduced by half. Strain through a fine sieve. Leave to cool, and then scrape off the
fat on the surface, before storing in the fridge if you’re using within a day, or in
the freezer in a well-sealed container.
Chicken stroganoff
Rich, delicious, and on the table in
less than half an hour. Serves four.
You’ll need: One rotisserie chicken,
(skin and bones set aside), meat
shredded into bite size pieces.
One large onion, chopped. One
packet mushrooms - button or
portabellini, sliced. 59ml fresh
chicken stock. 125ml fresh
cream. 125ml sour cream. One
tablespoon Dijon mustard. Paprika,
salt and white pepper to taste.
Chopped parsley for garnish. Pasta,
egg noodles or mashed potatoes,
and one lemon, quartered, to
serve.
To make: In a large pan over
medium high heat, melt butter
and cook onions for a minute or
so. Add the mushrooms and cook
until deeply golden.
Add the chicken stock and fresh
cream, stir well, then add the Dijon
mustard, a generous shaking of
white pepper and paprika, and salt
to taste.
Bring to a simmer and let reduce
for five minutes or so, stirring every
now and then.
Add the shredded chicken, heat
for a minute, then add the sour
cream and adjust the seasoning
to taste.
Remove from heat, sprinkle with
parsley and serve with pasta,
egg noodles or mash and a
lemon quarter for each person to
squeeze over before they tuck in.

Red hot
Adding warmth to Winter ... peppery radishes, fiery coloured
flowers and red heart shaped leaves
If you are looking for a little culinary heat, grow radishes in a deep window box
on a sunny windowsill or any sheltered, sunny place. Radishes need warm soil
for germination so positioning is important. A good option is a Gusta Garden
planter with a cultivation hood so that growth can be started in a sunny room
indoors. The hood provides a warm, moist microclimate and when temperatures
rise, the planter can be taken outdoors.
Radishes grow so fast that it’s a great way to get kids excited about gardening
and growing their own food. Seeds germinate in three to eight days and are
ready for picking in three weeks. The nicest radishes are pulled before they are
fully grown. Regular watering will produce crisp, tasty radishes but water in the
morning so that the leaves are dry by the evening.
Try these:
• Radish Cherry Belle is the perfect quick nibble or salad ingredient. This cherry
red radish has snow-white flesh.
• Radish Sparkler is round in shape with a deep red colour and a distinct white tip
covering the lower part of the root. It is crisp, juicy and solid.
• Radish Watermelon has crunchy white flesh with bright pink to magenta centre.
When cut, the radishes look like tiny watermelons. The flesh has a mild, slightly
sweet flavour. Slice thinly to display their vibrant colour.

We’re planting …calibrachoa Bakari for its fiery, flame
coloured flowers that spill over hanging baskets and
containers. It’s warm on the eye, just what’s needed
to brighten the patio. This vigorous calibrachoa grows
into a mounded and trailing plant, 25 to 40cm high

its full colours and keep it sheltered from draughts.
Keep the soil lightly moist and feed monthly with a
liquid fertiliser for flowers.

Garden tasks for July
• Prune bush roses from mid-July.
• To prevent frost damage or disease, water plants in the
morning so that the leaves are dry by evening.
• Water spring-flowering bulbs once a week for at least
40 minutes.
• Cover tender shrubs, flowers and veggies when frost
is predicted,
• Strengthen veggies to withstand the cold by feeding
with a liquid kelp fertiliser.
Indoor plant
of the month
Alocasia Red Secret is
one of the more unusual
members of the ‘elephant
ear’ family. The large
heart-shaped leaves have
a metallic bronze glow, but
its secret is the burgundy
red underleaf. It is easier to grow than
it looks and its strong point is that it
adapts to different light conditions,
growing faster with bright light and
slower with low light. Water when
the soil feels partially dry. This unusual
Alocasia originates from Asia and Eastern
Australia and is found beneath the
forest canopy.

The rooms
reasons to visit
De Oude Kraal
Stay in one of the two dozen or so luxury rooms or
garden suites, or the Merino Farm rooms - around 500m
from the main house, these offer the option of selfcatering,
with private outside braai areas with glorious
views of the farm. The rooms are super comfy, with
sofas and fireplaces and coffee stations ... it’s all four-star
rated accommodation with country-style hospitality
and atmosphere.
If you’re travelling down to the Cape later this year,
the perfect - and we do mean perfect - stopover
is De Oude Kraal Country Estate and Spa, just
outside Bloemfontein. In fact, we’d suggest a two
night stop-over, since there’s just so
much to enjoy at this brilliant
estate, which is at the
centre of a 3000 hectare
working merino
sheep farm.
The spa
Could there be anything more enjoyable after a long drive than a
full body massage? We think not. The award-winning spa - set in
the gardens - has single and double treatment rooms, where you
can lie back and relax with a massage, facial, or wrap. There are all
the treatments you expect - manis and pedis and waxes - as well
as a Swedish and infra-red sauna, a steam room, pool and Jacuzzi.
Packages and journeys, too ... well worth pre-booking.
The activities
There’s something for absolutely every guest.
From an hour long horse ride with a guide
to a half hour hand-led ride for the children
to bird watching, and clay pigeon and .22
shooting. There are mountain bike and hiking
trails, a sheep farm tour - two hours on the
farm bakkie - besides sheep, the farm as cattle,
horses, chicken, pigs ... it’s the most marvellous
two hours for children. There are also eco farm
runs and sundowner drives and farm safaris,
where you can look out for the Springbuck,
Blesbuck, Sable, Njala and Gemsbuck, who
aren’t shy ... often grazing just outside the
rooms. The ostriches came over for a sneak
peek at us too, and there was a peacock
showing off his fine colours on our veranda for
much of our stay.

Let’s talk food. It is the highlight of a venue where highlights are plentiful.
Owner Marie Lombard is passionate about her food, and it shows on
every plate. She’s all about using the freshest, locally sourced produce,
sustainable and ethical farming practices, simplicity done perfectly. The
four course fine-dining experience served in the main farmhouse each
evening is a treat ... we enjoyed a pork belly in a coke sauce with apple
mousse and a bacon chip to start off with, a glorious hake and mussel
seafood course with black risotto, followed by aged fillet with a nettle
sauce and slow baked lamb from the farm, along with three proper
old-school Afrikaans farmer veggie side dishes (another highlight!), and
a crème brûlée pud that finished the evening off sweetly. There’s also
an a la carte restaurant, with easy but no less impressive dishes ... if you
order a pizza, burger or salad, know it’s going to be extraordinary! A
great option if you’ve youngsters, but plan accordingly since it’s open
only from 11am to 3pm, with a three-course set-menu lunch on Sunday.
You may, if you’re lucky, have your visit coincide with one of the special
events the hotel’s known for ... wine makers dinners and festivals and
special occasion celebrations. The rate includes a full, and jolly hearty,
breakfast, and afternoon tea and cakes, served at the main house daily.
