Coach Tourism Association
There’s something quietly reassuring
about this industry of ours. While the
world speeds on with new-fangled AI
and space tourism press releases,
we’re still boarding a coach with a
flask of tea, a tin of shortbread, and a
firm belief that the best way to
understand a place is to see it
properly – through a windscreen,
with commentary, and a lunch stop.
This issue, we start at the top: the
Coach Tourism Association, who
remain the steady hand on the tiller,
guiding the sector forward while
keeping both feet on the ground.
Their latest updates are more than
admin and minutes – they’re the
breadcrumbs that lead us all to
something bigger: a thriving,
connected future for coach travel.
We turn our gaze, quite literally, to
London, that old friend who always
has something new to show us. From
hidden corners to towering
cathedrals, London is a place that
rewards the curious – and never
punishes the nostalgic.Then, perhaps
after all that sightseeing, a little
refreshment is in order.
Distilleries, breweries and vineyards
have become something of a
For the seekers and explorers among
us, Space & Exploration attractions
add a heady dose of wonder. These
places remind us how far we’ve come
– from standing stones to space
shuttles – and how thrilling it is to
think that coach parties of the future
might be heading to the moon.
But there’s something soul-settling,
too, in the solid silence of churches,
abbeys and cathedrals – places built
for reflection and, thankfully, with
plenty of parking nearby.
We’ve gone deep into
Wonderful Wales and
wandered around
Oxfordshire, both of
which reveal
themselves slowly,
like good
conversation. Their
mix of landscapes, legends and lowkey
brilliance makes them ideal for
excursions that don’t just fill a day –
they enrich it.
And speaking of excursions, this issue
is full of them. Not just in name, but
in spirit. Each feature a reminder of
why we do this: to connect people to
places, and places to
people.
Because in the end,
that’s what it’s all
about.
Till next time,
safe travels.

Front cover. Group -Friendly Lavender Days in Kent
It’s hard to believe,
standing in this riot of
purple, that you’re just an
hour from London. But
there it is Kent.
Lavender’s been grown in
the UK since Roman
times—used to scent baths
and ward off evil spirits.
But it was the Victorians
who truly popularised it,
planting neat rows and
bottling it as a cure for
everything from insomnia
to ‘a touch of the vapours’.
In Kent, they take it
seriously. Castle Farm
grows over 100 acres, and
come midsummer, the
fields burst into bloom.
The air turns rich with
scent—like a perfume
counter come to life.
Coach parking is available,
and pre-booked group
tours can enjoy the fields,
farm shop, and seasonal
refreshments—ideal for a
relaxing summer day out.

Coach Tourism Association
Headed to Norwich for
Business and Broads
Norfolk welcomed the UK’s
coach tourism sector in May
as the Coach Tourism
Association’s Spring
Networking event took place
in and around Norwich. Held
over the weekend of 17–19
May, the event combined
business and product
development with a chance
to explore what Norfolk has
to offer for groups.
Things got underway on
Sunday with a gentle cruise
along the Norfolk Broads,
courtesy of Broads Tours,
giving delegates time to chat,
catch up, and take in the
scenery. From there, the
group headed north to
Holkham for lunch and a
guided tour of the estate –
both elegant and
informative. Transport was
provided by Eastons
Holidays, giving operators a
flavour of the region from a
visitor’s perspective.
The evening brought
everyone together at Holiday
Inn Norwich North – the
event’s host hotel – for
informal networking and
dinner, with entertainment
by CN Live Productions’
West End Crooners, adding a
relaxed, upbeat note to the
night.
Monday’s programme began
with the CTA’s Annual
General Meeting, chaired by
Robert Shaw, followed by a
short presentation focusing
on the opportunities for
coach tourism in Norfolk. It
set the tone for the final
session – the Supplier
Showcase – which saw
hotels, attractions, and other
providers meeting face-toface
with operators and
wholesalers to discuss
itineraries, availability, and
future plans.
Robert Shaw, Chair of the
CTA, said the event had
achieved exactly what it set
out to do: “The line-up of
Norfolk fam trips gave coach
operators a valuable
opportunity to explore new
options for their groups,
while the Showcase helped
connect suppliers directly
with the people planning the
tours. It’s about making sure
we’re all ready for what’s
next.”
With sunshine, good
conversations and a few new
partnerships forming over
coffee cups and brochures,
the Norwich gathering
showed that the sector is
optimistic, collaborative and
quietly evolving. From
historic houses to riverside
views, Norfolk proved a
fitting setting for an industry
that thrives on discovery –
and a good day out.

A big thank you to all
involved in organising our
Fam Trip during the
Excursions Show weekend,
we had a ball.
Sunday was a lovely sunny
day, and we set off eager for
our visits. Bear in mind there
are weight limits on the
bridges around Audley End,
so we had to take a detour.
Once there, we enjoyed a
fabulous tour with our guide.
Everyone enjoyed it.
Potters was a big hit. All
participants said they’d have
liked a free day at Potters to
enjoy all the facilities on
offer. Other than that, we
received a very warm
welcome, staff were friendly
& helpful, food was delicious
and the entertainment
excellent.
Adam at Epping Ongar
On then to Hedingham
Castle. Not suitable for
anyone with mobility issues
due to the uphill walk to the
castle and then the uneven
steps up to and inside the
castle. However, our guide
was excellent and very
entertaining. He even had
one of our organisers dressed
up with a bit of audience
participation!
We called in at Newmarket
on the way home on Monday
and enjoyed a whistle-stop
tour of the National Stud.
An excellent visit.
All in all it was a very
successful weekend and
everyone commented on
how useful it was. I have
listed some comments
below:
‘I'd just like to thank you
once again for organising a
fantastic trip. Ken and I really
enjoyed ourselves. We met
some lovely people and
gained a lot of useful
information. I'm sure we'll
benefit from the whole
experience.’
‘A quick email to thank you
on behalf of Margaret and
myself for a wonderful
weekend away. You must
have put a lot of effort into
organising this and, I assure
you, this was appreciated.
Potters Five Lakes was
excellent, a bit like being on
a cruise ship without the
turbulence, although it was a
pity that we didn’t have time
to enjoy all the facilities.
However, this was more than
made up for by the
excursions, all of which we
enjoyed and to which we
would like to return. One of
our grandsons said that ‘it
was cool’ that we had been
pitch side at Wembley.’

Wonderful Wales

Cyfarthfa Castle: A 200-
Year-Old Masterpiece of
Welsh Industry and
Imagination
Cyfarthfa Castle stands not
only as the most
architecturally impressive
Ironmaster’s house in
Wales, but as one of the
most significant historical
landmarks in the country.
Built in 1825 for William
Crawshay II—scion of one
of the most powerful
families in the Welsh iron
industry—the castle is an
opulent reminder of
Merthyr Tydfil’s global
industrial might during the
nineteenth century.
Crawshay, sometimes
known as the "Iron King of
Wales," spared no expense
in his creation. The result
was a grand, turreted
mansion in the Gothic
Revival style, complete
with crenellated towers and
commanding views over
the town and surrounding
hills. Today, it’s Grade I
listed—a mark of its
exceptional national
importance.
When the Crawshay family
departed in the late 1800s,
the building entered a new
chapter of public service.
Taken over by Merthyr
Tydfil County Borough
Council, Cyfarthfa Castle
was converted into a
museum and art gallery on
the ground floor and a
grammar school on the
upper levels. Although the
school has since moved on,
the museum—established
in 1910—continues to
thrive and remains one of
the region’s most beloved
cultural institutions. Locals
often describe it as a
"hidden gem," and it’s easy
to see why: few expect to
find such an impressive and
varied collection of art and
artefacts tucked away in
this quiet corner of South
Wales.
Inside, the museum and
gallery offer visitors a
journey through time, from
the Roman conquest of
Britain through to the
peaks of the Industrial
Revolution and the modern
era. The collection includes
everything from fine art
and ceramics to costumes,
military memorabilia and
items relating to local life.
Special exhibitions rotate
regularly, and there’s a
calendar packed with
activities—guided walks,
hands-on workshops,
family-friendly trails,
seasonal events and lively
talks that make history
anything but dry.
In 2025, Cyfarthfa Castle
marks its bicentenary—a
rare and remarkable
milestone. To honour 200
years of industrial
innovation, architectural
splendour, and community
spirit, the team is launching
Cyfarthfa200, a year-long
festival of events designed
to bring the castle’s past
and present to life. Visitors
can look forward to an
ambitious programme of
exhibitions, performances
and celebrations that will
shine a spotlight not only
on the Crawshays, but on
the generations of working
people who built Merthyr
Tydfil into a powerhouse of
global trade and
transformation.

dramatic deep-dive into the

Descend by cable railway

Space & Exploration
It’s amazing what you can learn about space without ever leaving the M25. Britain, it turns out, is surprisingly good at
the cosmos. Not necessarily at going “into” it, mind you—but very good at pointing at it, measuring it, naming bits of it
after Victorian astronomers, and then making a nice gift shop.
Start with the National
Space Centre in Leicester,
which looks like a rocket
had a polite nervous
breakdown. Inside, it’s a
glorious tribute to buttons,
blinking lights, and the kind
of audio-visual installations
that feel like they were
installed slightly too early
and never quite fixed. You’ll
find children climbing into
capsules, adults pretending
to understand orbital
mechanics, and everyone
queuing for the
planetarium. The
planetarium is wonderful—
like IMAX in zero gravity,
narrated by someone who
once worked with Brian
Cox and still dines out on
the story.

place.
Bristol’s We The Curious is
basically science with
snacks. Rebranded from
At-Bristol in a wave of
marketing optimism, it’s
full of mist, buttons, lights,
and very enthusiastic
signage. The 3D
planetarium has reclining
seats—ideal for pondering
galaxies or just having a
discreet nap while your
group tries to launch a
tennis ball into low Earth
orbit.
The Winchester Science
Centre is calmer, like
science in a jumper. Lots of
clean surfaces, smiling
staff, and a planetarium
that makes the stars feel
friendly. It’s good for
families, especially the sort
who enjoy being gently
reminded of gravity.
Then there’s Kielder
Observatory, which is less a
building and more a
beautifully designed excuse
to lose phone signal for
three hours. It’s out in the
middle of nowhere, under
skies so dark they make the
Milky Way look like it’s
showing off. You go for the
stars and stay for the
awkward silence of people
trying not to say “wow” too
loudly.
