Film star’s life of disco balls,
emus and quiet reflection
• By Dylan Smits
IN THE tiny settlement of
Birdlings Flat, Patrick McNulty
spends his advancing years
tending to a menagerie of emus,
pigs and chickens and reflects on
his life’s loves and losses.
Little did he know he would
become the star of a short film.
First time director Loren Kett,
29, met the bearded man in his
70s about five years ago when
his colourful property caught
her eye during a visit to the
settlement.
“He was the most gentle and
sweet man, living his fullest
life blasting Irish music from
the porch covered in disco
balls, showing me the sewing
machines he’d fixed up, all of his
polished gemstones, even introduced
me to his emus,” she said.
She had climbed over the fence
to give his kunekune pigs a pat.
Although the house looked
a little scary from the outside,
covered in bicycles and
other knick-knacks, she was
completely drawn to it.
“I don’t do my house up for
people to think ‘oh what a lovely
house.’ I just put in what I think
I want and it’s mine. It’s like my
own little castle,” McNulty says
in the film.
Called My Dying Place, the
film was accepted into the Show
Me Shorts Film Festival which
runs from October 11-23.
• Turn to page 8
STAR: A short film showcases the daily life and past ups and downs of Patrick McNulty
from Birdlings Flat. The film, My Dying Place, asks viewers to ‘not judge a book by its cover’
and examines McNulty’s loves and losses as he gets older in the quiet settlement.

How much Crocs really cost
A FAMOUSLY ugly shoe is
trending in the wrong direction
when it comes to safety, data
shows.
So far this year, ACC has
paid out nearly $2 million to
people with ‘fall related’ claims
involving Crocs, jandals and
high heels alone.
The total number of Crocrelated
accidents in the year to
September has already surpassed
2023’s figure, up to 128 from 109.
The number of jandal-related
accidents is decreasing, while
high heel accidents have
remained steady over the past
four years, the data shows.
Losing balance or skidding on
foot was the most common way
for people to sustain injuries in
both Crocs and jandals.
A twisting movement was the
most common way to be injured
wearing heels – 70 people were
injured in this fashion over the
past nine months.
Meanwhile, at least 10 people
were “struck by a person or
animal” while wearing Crocs,
jandals and heels, causing a
significant enough injury to
require ACC.
For the year to date, more than
$1.3 million has been paid in
active costs relating to the 495
people who needed to recover
from jandal accidents.
While some people might
need more assistance than
others, that cost about $2700 on
average per jandal accident.
For high heel injuries, about
$472,720 was paid out, and for
Croc-related accidents, $63,797
was paid out.
The number of people hurt
while wearing Crocs tripled between
2022 and 2023, while the
cost to ACC of treating those
injuries doubled.
On the numbers and costs
alone, the humble jandal appears
to sustain the most damage
to the wearer. High heels
come in second, with Crocs
climbing the ranks to third.
ACC said the data for this year
was not definitive.
When people hurt themselves,
they had options to describe on
the form how it happened.
“This field is not mandatory
to complete and not every client
does so. Also, when the field is
completed, there is considerable
variation in the way accidents
are described.”
That meant there could be a
much larger number of people
who had footwear-related
injuries who had not noted the
type of footwear on the form.
The Strategists
Churchill, Stalin, Roosevelt, Mussolini and Hitler
– How War Made Them, And How They Made War
by Phillips Payson O’Brien
A compelling revisionist history which explores
the impact of WW1 on the mindsets and strategic
decisions of WW2’s most important leaders If we
want to understand military strategy, we must first
understand the strategist. In THE STRATEGISTS,
Professor Phillips Payson O’Brien delves deep into
the psyches of five of the most impactful leaders in
modern history - Churchill, Hitler, Stalin, Mussolini
and Roosevelt - and their respective strategic methods
and choices. Payson O’Brien shows how the views of
these leaders were forged in World War One and the
Russian Civil War, and that these views are crucial to
understanding how they fought World War Two. The
implications of the power of leaders remain with us
to this day- to truly understand what is happening in
Ukraine, for example, requires us to know what has
influenced the leaders involved.
Top trout play
hard to get as
young anglers
cast their lines
• By Geoff Sloan
SPARKLING weather drew
more than 5000 fishing fans to
the Groynes fishing lakes on
Sunday, in the hope of catching
the big one.
The free nationwide Take a
Kid Fishing initiative aims to
encourage young people to experience
the joy of fishing.
A special whole-of-site licence
allowed event participants to
fish without a licence for the day,
with a limit of one fish for each
child.
Free fishing rods were provided,
along with bait worms,
and volunteers were on hand to
assist with the set up, and help
untangle lines.
The free annual event was
organised by the Kids Fishing
Charitable Trust, with members
running casting lessons and
tackle demonstrations for the
assembled anglers.
An executive chef was also
on hand to demonstrate how to
fillet and cook the fish, for those
lucky enough to haul one out of
the lake.
About 800 rainbow trout were
released into the lakes in preparation
for the event .
Anglers were able to reel in
about 350 fish on the day, with
many of the larger fish managing
to evade the multitude of
hooks.
Organisers said they were
pleased with the number of
young anglers who attended, a
sign the future is looking strong
for the sport.
Unique home a deer hunter’s dream
A TAI TAPU couple spent an
unexpected decade developing
their own Grand Designs-style
home where they can stand on
their deck and shoot wild deer
roaming in a private valley.
While Jason and Megan Wood
opted for their ambitious project
to stay off the TV, they did enlist
the expert help of builder Clive
Barrington who was well used to
building elaborate homes.
But due to delays with the
design and build, the Woods have
spent more time planning and
building their home than they
have lived in it, OneRoof reported.
They are now selling their labour
of love at 4/82 Heaton Drive,
Tai Tapu, which tested both their
patience and budget, to be nearer
to their teenage daughters’ school
and activities in Christchurch.
The couple first fell in love with
the 4.38ha bare section in a sun-lit
valley-within-a-valley near Tai
Tapu after the earthquakes in late
2010 and early 2011.
It was their second time building
a home and they had set ideas
about how they wanted the house
to look.
“I had always wanted to build
something cool – I don’t know
if I would ever do it again. The
last house I built, it was a nice
house but it wasn’t a dream house
and this was,” Jason Wood told
OneRoof.
GRAND DESIGN: A luxury fivebedroom,
three-bathroom
mountain lodge-style home
on Heaton Drive, Tai Tapu, is
for sale for the first time.
To realise their ambitious vision
of a chalet-inspired home with
large windows and high ceilings
in the foothills, they first enlisted
the help of a draughtsman and
then an architect.
But after several years and tens
of thousands of dollars in fees,
Wood said neither had been able
to pull it off and they eventually
found Stephen Fitzgerald, of SFA
Studio, who spent two years completing
the plans.
Wood said having three different
people attempt the plans had
been a large part of the delays and
why the home which they had expected
to take them three to four
years to design and build ended
up taking 10.
The actual build took just under
three years and the family finally
moved in just before the country
went into lockdown in 2020.
Wood told OneRoof he couldn’t
have been happier with the
“phenomenal” build.
The result was a luxurious
five-bedroom, three-bathroom
home with a gourmet kitchen,
top-floor master bedroom, guest
suite and an upstairs living and
library area.
While the property ended up
ticking every single one of their
boxes and was meant to be their
forever home, Wood told OneRoof
the delays meant the home they
had planned for their children to
grow up in hadn’t been ready until
they were almost teenagers.
“It’s a bittersweet thing to be
selling and moving to be honest.
We know we are giving up a lot,
but both the kids go into town to
school every day and they’ve only
really known living out in Tai
Tapu or on that piece of land.
“They are chomping at the bit to
get into town and I guess we are
just doing it for family,” he said.
It was a home that would suit
both families and downsizers who
wanted enough room for family to
stay, Wood said.
“You feel like you are away from
it all. It’s amazing. At night you
don’t see any light – it’s completely
black. I always thought you would
feel isolated, but you feel safe.”
The wildlife was “insane”,
Wood said, adding that at certain
times of the year, wild deer can be
seen roaming the property.
“I shot three (deer) in one night
just sitting on the deck.”
Bayleys agent Chris Jones told
OneRoof it was a unique property
and he hadn’t seen anything like
it before.
“It’s unusual in a great way. A
lot of people just end up taking a
normal home and making it a bit
bigger and a bit fancier – this is
something pretty unique.”
So far interest had come from
expats in the United States, people
wanting to move from the CBD
for more space and Aucklanders
looking to relocate, Jones said.
“Don’t judge a book by its cover”
• From page 1
The festival, held in cities
nationwide, features 85 films
including 26 made by New
Zealanders.
My Dying Place will be
showcased during the festival’s
Christchurch opening night at
Alice Cinemas.
Kett, from Christchurch, is a
freelance editor, with eight years
of experience working on commercials
and music videos.
“I’ve always enjoyed messing
around with a camera. When
I was little, I always had a film
camera on me,” she said.
The film initially follows
McNulty’s daily routine with his
sometimes demanding animals.
Then the story delves into his
experience with depression and
anxiety, mostly brought on by
his brother’s untimely death in a
car accident.
“Those are hard things in life,
but it just makes you tougher,”
he said.
McNulty spends much of the
film reflecting on life at an older
age in his quiet sanctuary.
“Memories, they’re all locked
away. You can sit out here and
think of them all.”
After moving to Birdlings Flat
from Christchurch nearly 30
years ago to escape the busy-ness
of the city, McNulty started
collecting his animals.
“Birdlings Flat, it’s unusual.
There’s nothing like it anywhere
in New Zealand. It’s like there’s
an atmosphere that calms you
and the township has all sorts of
people,” he said.
He now has more than 50
chickens, a flock of ducks,
two pigs, three piglets, three
peacocks, and a shih tzu dog.
“They rule my life,” McNulty
said.
Two of his most prized animals
are his emus which were
close to laying eggs during
filming.
Kett was encouraged to pursue
her interest in directing by
colleagues in the film industry
and realised McNulty would be
the perfect subject for a short
documentary film.
“When I stumbled across
Patrick’s property my gut
instincts told me there was a
TEAMWORK: The makers of My Dying Place. From left to right,
director Loren Kett, director of photography Julian Vares, star
Patrick McNulty and producer Julie Gursha.
CARE: A focus of the film is McNulty’s care for his animals. He has an eclectic collection of
pets including chickens, pigs and emus.
great story to be told here.”
The short film has also been
selected to screen as part of
the Kerry International Film
Festival in Ireland which starts
on October 17.
“That’s where Patrick is from
so that was a really, really special
one for us,” Kett said.
McNulty was born in Ireland,
but grew up in Christchurch.
After his brother’s death,
he escaped back to his birth
country for a time before
returning to New Zealand and
getting married.
“That didn’t work out,
probably me again. I thought we
were happy,” said McNulty.
Kett sat on her film idea for
more than two years after first
meeting McNulty, but eventually
got up the courage to approach
him with the idea.
“He had opened up to me about
some pretty deep stuff. So he
definitely left a mark on me which
made me want to go back to it,”
Kett said.
“As soon as we reached out he
“As we began talking about life it was so clear to
me that human judgement is rife. People would
see his house and automatically assume he was
perhaps a little scary.”
– Loren Kett
said he was keen. He was really
welcoming. He invited us around
for a cup of tea and a chat and we
got to know him better.”
Kett and McNulty then spent
the next two years filming the
documentary over 10 visits.
“As we began talking about life,
it was so clear to me that human
judgement is rife. People would
see his house and automatically
assume he was perhaps a little
scary,” said Kett.
“I wanted to show that beauty
can be found everywhere, and
delve into the cliché ‘don’t judge a
book by its cover’.”
Kett initially viewed making
the film as a part-time hobby
before positive reactions from
friends and colleagues convinced
her to submit the film to Show
Me Shorts.
“I’d never meant for it be a
festival film. When I found out I
literally screamed in my office and
was jumping and running around.
Patrick was really pleased as well.
He’s excited to share his story with
people.”
Another boon from making
the film has been the blossoming
connection between Kett and
McNulty.
“We’ve got a really lovely
friendship which is so special. I
think it ended up being a little
bit of therapy for both of us, just
talking about life.”
Kett says she and McNulty are
“extremely proud” of the film.
“It’s sort of his legacy. When I
showed him a cut he said he can’t
wait to leave something behind.
He’s going to leave his mark on
people through the film.”
Greyhounds gather for great walk
• By Ella Jenkins
GREYHOUND owners and their
dogs strutted their stuff at Hagley
Park on Sunday as part of the
Great Global Greyhound Walk.
About 80 people took part this
year, slightly up on last year when
71 walkers and their dogs joined
almost 12,000 from around the
world, walking with the aim of
promoting the breed as a pet.
Christchurch organiser Kieran
Doyle says it is great to be a part
of the greyhound owners’ community
and to “organise some
fun adventures for everyone to get
together”.
Doyle was walking with his dog
Artey.
A greyhound wasn’t his first
choice of breed, but he found they
were a good fit for his townhouse.
Kieran adopted Artey four years
ago, while still living in Auckland,
through adoption agency Greyhounds
as Pets.
Doyle said Artey “wasn’t a
particularly great racer, but he has
become a fantastic pet”.
“They do like their little runs,
but they’re mostly just couch
shadows,” said Doyle.
Suzie Kerr, owner of greyhounds
Bud and Rosie, was drawn
to the breed after dog-sitting a few.
Kerr is also fostering another
greyhound, Harper.
She said her family couldn’t just
look after a greyhound, as they
would miss it too much when it
left.
The loving, gentle nature of
the breed is what endears Kerr to
greyhounds the most – and the
way they curl up on the couch
with her after a long week at work.
“It was the best decision we ever
made to get a greyhound. I pretty
much think we have a life of greyhounds
ahead of us.”
For those looking to adopt one,
Kerr says to “just get one, don’t
wait any longer”.
For Faye Barnes, the dogs’
GLOBAL WALK:
Christchurch greyhound
owners and their dogs took
to Hagley Park to promote
how good greyhounds are
as pets.
part in the walk.
elegance and clean nature drew
her to the breed. Gold Star Jojo
is her first greyhound, and in
a month she will be getting a
second.
Like Barnes, Deborah Callahan
is a first-time greyhound
owner and took part in the walk
with her dog Phoebe.
She said Phoebe was “probably
be the easiest dog I’ve ever had”.
She said greyhounds are a breed
that requires little stimulation or
exercise.
“They are the biggest goofs, but
also really graceful.”
RISING STAR: Motorsport driver Louis Sharp, 17, won the GB3 championship
title at the weekend.
Young driver repeats
Ayrton Senna’s feat
• By Daniel Alvey
CHRISTCHURCH teenager Louis Sharp
has secured a key victory on his road to
Formula 1.
The rising motorsport star won the 2024
GB3 Championship title at the weekend.
The GB3 rookie secured five wins across
the season with the final victory coming
in race two of three at the Brands Hatch
Circuit near London.
A 10th place in the reverse grid race
three secured the title for Sharp.
The 17-year-old said he was “so grateful
to be in this position”.
“I don’t think very many people go
F4 and then the next year win the GB3
championship, so I’m very lucky and very
happy.
“I’ve got to give a big thank you to the
whole team – my dad, who’s been over
here with me the whole step of the way.
My success is down to him and my family
and friends, not only in New Zealand but
the UK as well.”
Sharp has won back-to-back junior
formula championships, having claimed
the British F4 series last year.
He joins Brazilian Ayrton Senna, who
achieved the feat in the 1980s, and went
on to win three F1 world titles.
As a result of winning the GB3 title,
Sharp has secured a test drive in an FIA
F3 car, the logical next step.
Despite the test he is yet to reveal what
his plans will be for next year.
“I can’t give too many secrets away just
yet, but we’ll be moving on from GB3 and
taking that next step up, so we’ll just have
to see what it is.”
Last week, Sharp was named as one
of four finalists in the Autosport BRDC
Young Driver of the Year award. The
winner will earn a test in an Aston Martin
F1 car.
Sharp also won the Jack Cavill
Pole Position Cup, and his team
Rodin Motorsport took out the teams
championship title.
TREASURES FROM THE PAST
Gladys Boyd’s unflagging service
• By Liz Grant
THEY SIT MODESTLY at the
corner of Winchester and Oxford
Sts in Ōhinehou Lyttelton. But
the four red brick cottages, built
in 1965, add to much-needed
social housing for the town’s
residents.
‘Boyd Cottages’ proclaims a
blue plaque, honouring local
woman Gladys Ethel Boyd.
Boyd was born in Lyttelton in
1898, the daughter of Richard
and Frances Meyrick (née
Loader). She went to Lyttelton
District High School and lived in
Lyttelton all her life.
In 1916, when she was 18-yearsold,
she married Donald John
Boyd (1881-1962), who had come
to New Zealand from Scotland
and worked at the port. They
lived at 44 Cornwall Rd.
Throughout her married life,
Boyd volunteered much of
her time working for the community,
in Lyttelton and in
Christchurch.
DEDICATION: Boyd Cottages are named after the tireless Gladys Ethel Boyd.
In 1947, she and Mrs J.A
Gilmore were the first women to
be elected as Lyttelton borough
councillors.
Boyd was a member of the
council for 18 years and consistently
got a high number of votes
in elections.
In the election of 1959, both she
and her husband Donald stood as
candidates. Boyd got elected with
753 votes, but Donald, with 514,
missed out on a place because
there were only nine vacancies
that year.
Boyd became chair of the
council’s health and sanitation
committee and the traffic committee.
She was also the council’s
representative on the allocation
committee for state housing, and
on the patriotic committee.
Women’s Patriotic Associations
were formed during WW1 and
continued during WW2. Their
primary focus was to provide
parcels for soldiers, containing
clothing, food and tobacco.
Thousands of women throughout
the country were involved.
Gladys did not stop there.
She was a member of the North
Canterbury Hospital Board
for 12 years, representing the
combined district of the County
of Heathcote and the Borough
of Lyttelton. She served on its
benevolent, building, and public
health committees.
Boyd was 68 when she died on
December 6, 1966.
As a mark of respect, the
Lyttelton Borough Council’s flag
was flown at half mast.
Her obituary, published the
next day in The Press, cited the
many other organisations she
was involved in:
• Save the Children Fund
• Lyttelton sub-centre of St
John
• New Zealand Child Health
Council
• Urban Fire Council
• Rāpaki Women’s Welfare
League
• Canterbury School
Committee Association (of which
she was president for a term).
To top it off, Boyd also served
as a Justice of the Peace for
12 years.
Celebrating 30 Years
of the Curtain Bank
This was a celebration that saw a
community come together to
acknowledge all those who had a
vision 30 years ago to establish the
Curtain Bank for families across
Canterbury and the West Coast.
Guests arrived to share memories and
to appreciate all those who have
worked tirelessly to warm the hearts
and homes of families in need.
Speeches were made, Long Service
Certificates were awarded to volunteers
and employees for many years of
loyalty to a wonderful cause. Afternoon
tea was enjoyed with a celebratory cake
shared amongst the guests.
Les Norris, Gayle Katene, Ian
McChesney, Jenny Small, Delle
Small and Lachlan Knighton.
Distinguished guests were Delle
Small and Ian McChesney the
creators of the Curtain Bank, both
were instrumental in the growth,
along with Delle’s daughter, Jenny
Small as CEO. As a Member of
EECA’s Advisory Group, CEA
helped to establish the original
Energy Saver Fund in 1995. Since
then, CEA has successfully received
funding to support a range of
Community Projects. We continue
to be enormously grateful for the
work of these visionaries.
We welcomed representatives from
Les Norris, Gayle Katene, Ian McChesney, Jenny Small, Delle Small & Lachlan Knighton
Community Energy Action - Curtain Bank
our Partners at Orion, Meridian, City
Mission and Lachlan Knighton from
our Board of Trustees.
CEA knows that insulation is a priority
and so are curtains which reduce heat
loss from windows and add colour
and cosiness. The Curtain Bank
became a success story and is still
going strong to this day. In the first six
months of 2024 they have provided
curtains to 340 homes across Canterbury
and the West Coast.
The Curtain Bank Coordinator,
Gayle Katene has been there for 20
years and spoke about how it has only
survived all this time by relying on the
generosity of Volunteers who have
turned up every day, bringing with
them their sewing skills, patience and
kindness while they work with families
to create the warmth they deserve.
The Curtain Bank relies on donations
from the public, so if you are spring
Jenny, Delle, Ian and Gayle joined by some of the dedicated CEA Curtain Bank team.
cleaning or renovating, please think
of us before you throw away useable
curtains. Every curtain we receive is
recycled, nothing is wasted, as there
is a home for everything. We are
grateful for all the support we receive.
Jenny, Delle, Ian and Gayle joined by
The Boyd Cottages were damaged in the
February 22, 2011 earthquakes but were
able to be repaired.
On June 15, 2012, they were rededicated
by Ruth Dyson, who for many years was
the MP for Banks Peninsula.
Not long after, speaking in Parliament
on the centenary of New Zealand
women winning the right to stand for
Parliament in 1919 (26 years after women
got the vote), Dyson had an amusing story
to tell.
Gladys and Donald had six children –
four daughters (one died at the age of 18)
and two sons – so there was a lot going on
at Cornwall Rd.
Dyson recounted: “At the reopening
ceremony for (the cottages) recently,
after their post-quake repairs were
completed, a family member told a story
of Gladys’ husband walking back from
the waterfront where he worked, and his
mate yelled out from across the road: ‘So
where’s Gladys tonight?’ And he said, ‘I
don’t know. She’s on every board except
the blimmin’ ironing board’.”
Stylish Yaris Cross brings green credentials
TOYOTA’S decision to create
an SUV version of its smallest
car, the Yaris, has been a master
stroke, although naming it the
‘Cross’ less so, although even
that hasn’t stopped it becoming
one of the company’s best selling
small vehicles.
Despite being around for more
than three years and our new car
market moving down through
the gears as demand slows in
response to tighter economic
times, buyers still face wait
times.
The Yaris Cross shares
the same well-proven and
engineered chassis, suspension
and powertrains from the
fourth generation Yaris. The
end result is a highly competent,
functional, stylish and packed
with a full suite of safety and
driver assist technologies.
Practicality, more room and
style make even its higher price a
more desirable vehicle for many
compared to the diminutive fivedoor
Yaris.
There is a sizeable difference
between the Yaris hatch and its
new Cross sibling. Overall, it’s
240mm longer has 50mm more
front overhang and a whopping
Motoring with Bob Nettleton
180mm at the rear. It has an
additional extra 30mm worth
of ground clearance and stands
90mm taller, enabling the Yaris
Cross to stand tall in the mini
urban SUV class.
Since its launch nearly four
years ago, the Yaris Cross has
morphed into a three strong
petrol-hybrid only range and
inline with all Toyota NZ
passenger vehicles that are
now low emission and low fuel
consumption hybrids.
The hybrid powertrain is
a cut-and-paste job from the
original Yaris, pairing a 1.5-litre
naturally aspirated threecylinder
petrol motor and petrol
electric hybrid system.
First step on the Yaris Cross
ladder is the $38,990 GX. From
there it’s a sizeable monetary
leap to the $45,190 GR Sport,
and a more modest $1k jump
into the flagship Limited. You
can personalise for a further $1k
with a nifty two-tone paint job.
If you’re serious about
reducing you carbon footprint
by driving something cleaner
and greener, the distinctive
Yaris Cross makes a compelling
case with super low CO2 engine
emissions of just 76g/km.
The 1.5-litre three-cylinder
petrol electric hybrid system
has a combined power output
of 85kW. In urban motoring
the hybrid has amazingly low
engine noise levels. The cabin
becomes a cone of silence when
the hybrid system is running in
electric-only mode, something
it regularly does for extended
periods on billiard table flat
urban roads.
It moves seamlessly between
its double life of petrol and
electric and back again, a credit
to an advanced and effective
lithium-ion battery and electric
motor set-up.
I noticed the petrol engine
component of the hybrid
sounded busy with its threecylinder
thrum to the fore when
a bit of hard graft is needed on
steeper hills.
City driving is very much the
happy place for this fashionable
mini-sized SUV and what it
was designed for. Going beyond
the urban limits nudges it and
the driver ever-so slightly out
of their comfort zones. Longer
open road trips are doable and
the test vehicle was comfortable
enough on a 200km roadie.
A direct shift CVT (continuously
variable transmission) is
purpose-built to deliver on
its claimed 3.5L/100km fuel
economy.
Ratings out of 10: Performance 7; Handling 6; Build Quality
7; Comfort 7; Passenger and Load Space 7; Value for
money: 5; Safety – Five star ANCAP crash rating.
Overall points out of 10: 7
The cabin has a sophisticated
and comfortable feel, with the
Yaris Cross the first compact
SUV from Toyota to feature
a 40/20/40 split rear seat. The
390-litre luggage capacity is good
but not class-leading. Folding
down the centre rear seat means
skis can be stowed comfortably.
The Limited features a smart
key, powered rear door with
‘kick sensor’ for easy loading and
unloading of the weekly grocery
shop.
The seating has a nice
upmarket look and feel, and
so it should given it $45k plus
price sticker, featuring premium
tweed-like fabric inserts and
synthetic leather.
The leathery look extends to
the steering wheel and gear lever
knob. The Limited has a colour
head-up display and satellite
navigation with SUNA Traffic
Channel, rear privacy glass and
an additional USB charging port.
While larger than the Yaris
hatch, the cabin still feels snug
and taller back seat passengers
will lament the lack of rear
legroom as they rest their chin
on their knees. This is tolerable
for short around town trips,
which to be fair is vehicle is built
for, but not a fun place for the
longer legged on journeys of
longer duration.
This is another Toyota model
that benefits from the company’s
acclaimed Safety Sense systems
and advanced driver assistance
functions.
These help drivers avoid a
wide range of common crash
risks using driver information,
early warnings, and if needed,
automatic braking and steering
intervention.
Standard is a Pre-Collision
System with autonomous
emergency braking, blind spot
monitor, lane tracing assist,
all-speed dynamic radar cruise
control, eight airbags, and
automatic high-beam on and
off, plus a reversing camera
with dynamic guidelines,
with the Limited spec adding
a panoramic view monitor
providing a surround view of the
vehicle.
Like its smaller hatch sibling,
the Cross has the same excellent
design qualities, where everything
works as one to meet the needs of
both the driver and passengers.
The ride and handling
exemplifies this, proving neat,
tidy and hardly putting a foot
out of place. The suspension is
balanced and nimble and when
its mettle is tested over twisty
terrain.
Its extra height and ground
clearance means more body roll
if you quicken the pace through
tight corners, and is an area
where the lower-slung hatch has
an edge.
The steering could do with
more road feel, although the
weighting is right on-point,
making both test vehicles easy to
park in even the most confined
parking spaces.
