Seawall will
AN EXPERT says the Sumner
Esplanade rock retaining wall
will need to be rebuilt.
Otago University associate
geography professor Mike Hilton
said if the 1.2km seawall is not
rebuilt within 10 years or so,
there will be an
increased risk of
exposure to waves
coming over the
wall.
Prof Hilton
has examined a
report on the wall
from engineering
consultant, Jacobs, which found
there are 19 points along the wall
where repairs are required.
However, Prof Hilton
said there is no immediate
danger.
“In the next few years, the
storm surge on that coast is not
particularly large. However,
when you look beyond the
short-term to the medium-term,
those storms are going to get
significantly larger and will have
a greater impact because the sea
level will be higher,” he said.
Committee member Russell
Dalzell said the intersection of
Main South and Browns Rds
has been concerning locals for
years.
“It’s a real bottleneck intersection.
Anybody travelling
from the southern end to the
northern end has to cross
there,” he said.
Lincoln
company’s
bid to
introduce
e-scooters
• By Devon Bolger
A LINCOLN-BASED company
is taking on Lime to bring
e-scooters to Selwyn.
Angela and Phillip Eberhard
have recently started a business
named Lava Scooters.
They have applied to the
district council to operate 50
e-scooters from 7-11am, seven
days a week in Rolleston, Lincoln
and Prebbleton. The application
includes the possibility of
expanding to 200 scooters in the
future if successful and allowed.
Mrs Eberhard said they are
excited to be entering the
market.
“Being local and knowing
this community and wanting to
be a part of that is exciting,” she
said.
“Lime is big and that’s probably
more of a risk for us but I think
working and living in this area
makes it more enjoyable and we’re
just hoping the community will
get behind us.”
There are some safety features
that se them apart from Lime,
Mrs Eberhard said.
