THE GOVERNORS Bay
Volunteer Fire Brigade showed
off their rope rescue skills
and new station extension as
they opened their doors to the
community on Saturday.
About 50 people attended the
open day which included a tour
of the station and a display of the
brigade’s trucks and gear.
The event was popular with
families and children, including
a group from the Cholmondeley
Children’s Centre.
“No doubt the kids had a great
time, getting sprayed with water
and everything,” said brigade
secretary Mike Smith.
As a lines two certified brigade,
the Governors Bay firefighters
specialise in rope rescues.
“We put a demonstration on
with the gear for everyone to
watch,” Smith said.
“We look after the Summit Rd
and carry out rescues of walkers
or victims of car accidents where
they have to be brought up on a
stretcher or on a rope.”
A dummy in a stretcher was
lifted through a rope pulley system
during the demonstration.
“People found it really
interesting and had quite a few
questions about the gear and
training.”
The brigade also hoped to
Funds raised
for tug refit
THE TUG Lyttelton Preservation
Society has raise more than
$3000 from community
donations for their vessel’s refit
since Bay Harbour News reported
on critical need for funding.
“We have a long way to go to
reach our $300,000 goal but we
know every little bit helps get
us one step closer,” said society
president Mike Bruce.
Bruce said the society was
grateful for the many messages
of support and small individual
donations they have already
received, but is still looking for
corporate or charity sponsorship
to reach their funding goal.
The refit plan is on hold until at
least $70,000 of the total is raised
which will allow work to begin,
but there will still be hundreds of
thousands left to raise.
The 116-year-old tug has been
out of commission since August
when the vessel’s boilers failed a
safety inspection.
Those interested in sponsoring
the tug’s refit can make contact
with the society at tuglyttelton@
gmail.com or meet society
members at their Steam
Extravaganza booth at McLeans
