Wednesday <strong>April</strong> 7 <strong>2021</strong> <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> News Latest Canterbury news at starnews.co.nz NEWS 11 COMMUNITY groups are taking the lead on a new trapping initiative in the Port Hills to help with predator control. The city council is working alongside community groups in Purau Reserve, Birdsey Reserve, Barnett Park and Giants Nose Reserve. It will be a six-month project to investigate how trapping can be safely supported in the smaller community reserves. This is a part of the city council’s commitment to make the Port Hills and Banks Peninsula pest-free by 2050. City council community parks manager Al Hardy said a training workshop was conducted at the end of last year, equipping volunteers with the necessary skills needed to set and monitor traps. Many of those involved in this project have already been trapping in the reserves for some time. Said Hardy: “Other community groups are new to trapping but have been doing planting and maintenance work in their local park. They see trapping as the next step towards restoring urban biodiversity.” Community group Friends of Purau Reserve has been working over the past few years to weed and then replant the reserve with indigenous vegetation. Said Purau Reserve volunteers co-ordinator Bronwyn McLennan: “I got involved because we need a habitat bridge or link between the city and Banks Peninsula for our native species, especially our birds, to be safe and proliferate.
