THOUGHTFUL: Lyttelton Primary
School pupil Arlo Withell hopes
the seafarer who gets this bag of
chips will soon see their family.
Pupils send messages
to ship-bound seafarers
SCHOOLS
“I HOPE you see your
family soon.”
That was the simple,
heartfelt message written
by a Lyttelton Primary
School pupil to one of the
many seafarers unable
to disembark their ships
during the Covid-19 pandemic.
It was written on a
sticky label, and stuck to
the side of one of more
than a hundred bags of
chips donated by Nelsonbased
Proper Crisps.
The donation was
secured by Andrea Solzer,
a Lyttelton-based parent
of three children at the
school. The chips will be
safely distributed by the
Seafarers Mission.
Donations from Whittaker’s
chocolates will
accompany a package
she hoped would lift the
spirits of seafarers caught
in a difficult situation.
“They cannot come
ashore they cannot leave
to see their families. This
is all out of their hands,
and that touched me, like
it has for many others.”
Many of the school’s
children took time last
week to write their own
messages to the sailors,
in an act teacher Francie
Graham reflected one
of the school’s values –
empathy.
BEST WISHES: Carmella de
la Maza Macpherson with her
message to a seafarer, carefully
stuck to the back of a bag of chips.
Solzer said the
message idea was
inspired by those written
on some of the goods
donated to Canterbury
families in the wake of
the February 22, 2011,
earthquake.
New Zealand’s Covid-19
alert level 1 rules mean
anyone entering the
country must either enter
managed isolation or
quarantine for 14 days
before they can enter the
general population.
This effectively means
short-stay visitors on
board visiting ships
cannot leave their vessels
unless they have been
in New Zealand for two
weeks and have tested
negative for Covid-19.
