Vajin Armstrong won the Tarawera Ultra Marathon at the weekend but it was full of drama and great sportsmanship. Armstrong led by 5min with 2km to go when he took a wrong turn, courtesy of someone who had mischievously changed the course signs. He had to backtrack to the course, where he bumped into his good mate and training partner, Chris Dunnell, who had been a distant second. They ran the last 2km together and in a piece of sportsmanship, or commonsense, when they got to the home straight he told Armstrong the race was his on the basis he had been well ahead when the wrong turn was taken. The combined van Asch and Kelston Deaf Education Centre board of trustees chairwoman Rachel Douglas said since 2012, the board had been considering the “long-term future location” of the van Asch operation. Rachel Douglas However, that process was currently on hold while the board “explores its new strategic goals,” Ms Douglas told <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> News. There are currently 11 students in residence at van Asch’s Truro St campus in Sumner. Parents and caregivers were sent a letter on January 22 outlining seven goals developed at the end of last year. They included “an exciting new development which is the board’s intention to create one new organisational structure to deliver a more efficient service nationwide. Having a national structure will allow us to make the best use of our buildings and properties.” Asked whether the relocation of the van Asch centre was being considered as part of that, Ms Douglas said she did not know at this stage. “We only have questions, not answers, at the moment on that. She emphasised the board did not have a preferred location. “Our preference is to focus on the needs of the children and work from there.” Ministry of Education deputy secretary sector enablement and support Katrina Casey said no decisions had been made on the van Asch school site. “Discussions with the board include exploring potential sites for the core school services, satellite and resource hubs, and are ongoing.” Van Asch principal Bernie Mulcahy-Bouwman would not comment on whether a relocation was being considered, referring <strong>Bay</strong> <strong>Harbour</strong> News to Ms Douglas. The company told the college last week that the service had been halted due to low patronage. NEW BUS SHELTER There will be a new shelter installed at the bus stop opposite Countdown Ferrymead after the Linwood-Central-Heathcote Community Board gave it the go-ahead. The current stop at 1008 Ferry Rd does not provide any protection from the weather. The city council has agreed to install one at a cost of $48,000, which may come down to $36,000 if advertising company, Adshel, purchase advertising rights.
