Hungerford, 15, claimed her first national event victory in the under-16 girls division. After making it to a finals berth at the national championships in January, Hungerford found herself at the top of a strong field of female Ava Henderson surfers in her division. However, an impressive score of 10.8 in the final secured her the title. She defeated the North Island contingent of Ariana Shewry (7.8), Brie Bennett (7.2) and Georgia Wederell (4.1) in the final. Henderson, 12, continued her good run of form this year claiming the under-<strong>14</strong> girls division against Piha’s Liv Haysom (7.4). Round one winner Natasha Gouldsbury (7.3) had to settle for third ahead of Australia’s Carol Fujino (5) in fourth. The second of three events in the Billabong Grom Series was CHAMPION: Estella Hungerford showed her class to win her first national event in Whangamata. Conditions were far from ideal but New Zealand’s top junior surfers battled it out across eight divisions to secure titles. The series is split into four divisions ranging from under-<strong>14</strong> to under 20 in two-year increments. You could say, somewhat luckily for Armstrong, the man that had now caught him was a good friend and also his regular training partner. The pair completed the last 2km together before sportsmanship dictated the 17sec winning margin. “Chris being the honourable fellow he is told me I was well ahead,” Armstrong said. “He certainly didn’t kick as hard as he could have and let me run away down the home straight.” Luckily Armstrong was the only runner affected by the act of tomfoolery. Although it added at least a handful of minutes to his winning time, he’s remained upbeat about the interesting finish to the race. “It’s an awesome group of people who do these sorts of SPORTS Mischief-makers and great sportsmanship events and there’s a real sense of camaraderie, so that overcomes anything like this.” This was Armstrong’s seventh time competing at the ultra marathon. However, it was the first win at the event. On all previous six occasions he competed in the 102km race where he has been on the podium on four occasions. The weather in Rotorua also threw a spanner into the works for competitors. Persistent rain in the two days leading up to the event and on race day meant that runners had to be conscious of footing throughout muddy areas on the trail run. It was also a busy weekend for other Sumner Running Club members competing in two major South Island events. In the Coast to Coast mountain run on Friday, Nathan Jones came third overall in 3hr 34min. At the Buller Marathon Lisa Brignull finished second in the women’s field in a time of 3hr 12min.
