Rotary clubs, The Warehouse<br />

stores and women’s refuge<br />

organisations around the<br />

country have combined in a<br />

massive, logistical project to<br />

bring a bit of cheer into the<br />

lives of women and families in<br />

need of a lift.<br />

The project, now in its fourth<br />

year, involves The Warehouse<br />

stores inviting customers and<br />

well-wishers to leave gifts. The<br />

Warehouse tops up the collection<br />

and individual Rotary<br />

clubs deliver the gifts to the<br />

refuges.<br />

At a local level, The Warehouse<br />

Eastgate collects the<br />

gifts and Ferrymead Rotary<br />

delivers them to the Te Whare<br />

Hauora refuge.<br />

That process is replicated all<br />

over New Zealand. Where possible,<br />

The Warehouse stores,<br />

Rotary clubs and women’s<br />

refuges are matched by geographical<br />

location – with the<br />

aim of keeping things locally<br />

relevant.<br />

There were so many gifts<br />

at The Warehouse, Eastgate<br />

they could hardly fit in a car<br />

boot, and there will be more to<br />

follow. Some were huge, some<br />

very tiny. Other Rotary clubs<br />

in Christchurch have been<br />

delivering gifts from other The<br />

Warehouse stores to the West<br />

Christchurch Women’s Refuge<br />

and the Battered Women’s<br />

Trust.<br />

The idea is to provide<br />

enough gifts for every refuge<br />

client to receive something –<br />

many of them have little or no<br />

money to spend on treats or<br />

presents for their children.<br />

The gifts – which are all vetted<br />

for safety and appropriateness<br />

– also provide the refuge<br />

organisations with a chance<br />

to make further contact with<br />

their clients and check on their<br />

well-being.<br />

Te Whare Hauora, the West<br />

Christchurch Women’s Refuge<br />

and the Battered Women’s<br />

Trust, all affiliates of the<br />

National Collective of Independent<br />

Women’s Refuges,<br />

are based in different parts<br />

of Christchurch, but work<br />

together. They share resources<br />

such as the 24-hour crisis<br />

To be affiliated to the national<br />

collective, organisations<br />
