We need confirmation of capital expenditure budgets before we can give a time frame for arrival. It won’t be this summer, unfortunately, but will be before the end of our financial year on June 30. It will be a bespoke rural appliance, which takes up to six months to build.” Mr Woods was “absolutely confident” the current tanker had the capability required, even though it was slower and only carried 3000-litres of water instead of the previous vehicle’s 4000-litres. “It’s ex-military and one of the most capable off-road vehicles that we have. It’s been performing the function of a dedicated rural fire capability for as long as the city council has had it.” But Mr Irving said while he understood it would take time to build a new truck, it didn’t resolve the immediate situation. “It’s the delay factor – that’s Tori Peden the concern. Sometimes you can get to a small fire and put it out. That small fire can become large within 10 or 15 minutes and if you haven’t done the business it becomes a large fire very quickly. It’s about time factors. I’ve been fighting fires for 24 years. I know that you can whip in and put something out quickly that if left for another five or 10 minutes can become a major headache.” “You go from a truck that could do 70 or 80km/h up a hill compared to one that struggles to do 40km/h – and you have to empty the water out of it – you’re talking about a 20min difference. And again, that could be the difference between saving a house or not.” “I work for the community – I’m a community member and I see the extra risk that we’ve been put in, and I object.” Banks Peninsula Community Board member Tori Peden said it was “scary” to hear it would be a six-month wait for a new tanker, especially as a long, hot and dry summer was predicted. “People in the community are quite concerned and it’s not only coming from the community it’s coming from the brigade themselves.” Local News Now Xmas campaign for kids THE LITTLE Ray of Giving campaign is back. The gift drive aims to put a smile on the faces of children and families who may need some extra cheer at this time of year. Ray White Ferrymead partners with Sumner, Redcliffs and Mt Pleasant schools and the Christchurch City Mission to help disadvantaged children who may need a little extra light in their festive season. “This is the third year that we’ve run A Little Ray of Giving and we want <strong>2017</strong> to be our biggest yet,” said operations manager Nancy Vincent Parr. “In our first year, we collected the most gifts of any Ray White branch in the country, which shows how much our community gets involved.” She said the aim was for 500 gifts this year. Those who wish to donate just need to inform the Ray White team whether the gift is for a boy or girl, and nominate an age group from babies to teenagers. “As much as it’s nice to donate your old gifts to friends or families, or the local charity shop, these are for a special day, so we politely ask for new gifts only. “All you need to do is wrap up your new present and drop it under the tree into our office reception,” Ms Vincent- Parr said. •The Christmas tree will be in the front window at 21 Humphreys Drive from December 1.
