THE AVON-Heathcote Estuary
Ihutai Trust is using a new way
to get people wandering around
the Charlesworth Wetland
Reserve track.
The trust is trialling a questionnaire
about the reserve’s
local flora for the community to
answer as they stroll around the
Wetland Edge Walk.
Trust co-ordinator Tanya
Jenkins said people will have to
locate signs around the reserve
which correlate to 20 questions
inside a pamphlet about a particular
plant within the reserve.
She said it appealed to people
both young and old.
“It is absolutely fun . . . Who
doesn’t want to be a detective?”
Mrs Jenkins said it was a great
way for the community to enjoy
a 30-minute walk, while also
learning something new about
the place they live in.
She said there are a range of
questions which help people
understand how certain plants
are cared for or why they look
the way they do.
The questionnaire is the first
of its sort in Christchurch tracks,
she said.
Mrs Jenkins said walking
tracks in the North Island had
started using an interactive element
to their walks which had
worked “really well,” so it was
about time Canterbury gave it
a go.
She said a family had trialled
the questionnaire and loved it.
“The parents enjoyed the trail
as much as the children. The
discussions after each question
by all four of them was fabulous
to see.”
OUR LADY Star of the Sea
School pupils donned different
countries’ colours for their
cultural day last week.
Year 8 student leaders Lucy
Walker, Rio Simpson and
Frances Dougherty organised the
day and divided the school into
three countries, where pupils
had to wear outfits representing
either the United States, Brazil or
Ireland.
The pupils were asked to
donate a gold coin and played a
“fun-style of Olympics,” which
included a variety of team sports
in the afternoon, all to raise
money for the year 7 and 8 camp
later next month, principal John
Kane said.
He said it was a wonderful
day for the school to celebrate
cultural diversity.
“We have many nationalities
represented at our school and it
was a colourful way for the children
to recognise that diversity.”
Mr Kane said more than $200
was collected and it was one of
several activities to fundraise for
the trip.
“Our student leaders did a
wonderful job co-ordinating the
day . . . it is always pleasing to see
students show innovation, awareness
and an empathy for others,”
he said.
