During the final phase of
the Coastal Pathway Project,
construction activities took place
in an area known to provide
habitat for kororā, commonly
known as white-flippered
penguins – a species classified as
“at risk – declining’’.
Recognising the significance of
this habitat, the Coastal Pathway
Group, in collaboration with
the city council and contractor
Fulton Hogan, diligently pursued
a project that prioritised quality
while minimising disturbance
to both human and penguin
populations.
From the project’s inception, the
council obtained a Wildlife Act
Authority from the Department
of Conservation, enabling the
capture, handling, and relocation
of penguins by a DOC-approved
penguin handler along the
580m-long rock revetment along
the eastern end of the Moncks
Bay pathway section between the
Christchurch Yacht Club and
Rapanui/Shag Rock.
Rigorous surveys, conducted by
ecologists and a specially trained
penguin tracking dog, identified
active burrows and provided
valuable insights into kororā
behaviour, including breeding and
moulting patterns.
After seven surveys spanning
the pre-breeding and breeding
seasons from August to November
2023, a total of four active burrows
were identified – crucial shelters
for the penguins. Within these
burrows, ecologists observed signs
of at least four adult penguins
HABITAT: White-flippered penguins were found and
relocated from the eastern end of the Moncks Bay
pathway section.
breeding, moulting and roosting.
The result were four healthy
penguin chicks who will call the
Coastal Pathway their home.
Following the pathway’s
completion, subsequent surveys
confirmed ongoing kororā activity
along the revetment section.
As stewards of this cherished
community asset, the Coastal
Pathway Group remains steadfast
in its commitment to conservation
