A PORTRAIT OF THE ARTIST
NEW PAINTINGS BY BEN MCLAUGHLIN
WSJ GALLERY, WINTER 2022
Fortunately for those of us who admire his work,
Ben McLaughlin has recently had a bout of intense creativity.
Ben is not the type of artist who keeps regular hours. When he
is truly inspired, as with this new series of works, his family have
to be even more patient than usual. Nights and weekends, as
well as all the daylight hours, are spent in the studio obsessively
working and re-working his paintings. Deadlines come and go
until Ben, always the perfectionist, is satisfied that his exquisite
creations are ready to go out into the world.
The 22 panel paintings in this catalogue embody the agony and
excitement of the creative process. Each one reminds us that an
original work of art is a unique piece of the artist, something he
has struggled to complete.
At 53, Ben has now been honing his astonishing skill for over
three decades. We revel in his ability to create the effect of
moon or sunlight beaming through clouds; a car’s headlights
shining through the fog; a streetlight glimmering in the rain or a
neon sign fizzing in the darkness. With his half-told narratives,
Ben somehow manages to distill half a century of life experience
into moments and essences.
Profound and spiritual, Ben’s new paintings touch the soul.
