Point Surf Team is the local board riders club in the Sumner and Taylors Mistake area. There are 35 members under the age of 18, with 14 girls and 21 boys. About 100 young surfers compete competitively in Canterbury overall. Bay Harbour News chatted with the young surfers earlier this month hoping to get an insight on what drew them to surfing and what motivates them to keep working on their craft. For all of the young surfers, a passion for the long board runs in the family. Said 10-year-old Kobe: “My Dad is a surfer. He helped push me on to the waves.” Another 10-year-old, Bodhi, first started surfing when he was three. His mother’s surfer friend took Bodhi out on the board with him. PHOTO: SAMANTHA MYTHEN caught a wave.” Said Jet, 8: “My dad’s a good surfer and he pushed me on to a wave when I was about 4. We paddled out on his long board and he caught a wave with me.” Girls are also dominating the Sumner surf scene. The first time Amelie Clarke, 12, went surfing was at a competition. Her parents both surf and they decided to enter Amelie, throwing her in the deep end. Now older and still in love with the sport, Amelie came first in the under 12 category of the Seventh Wave Women’s Canterbury Championships held in Sumner over the weekend of March 6. Tessa Langman, 12, started surfing when she was seven, inspired by her surfer father. After entering her first competition, she met Amelie and they have been surfing pals since. Langman said: “There are more young men surfing at the moment but a lot more girls are getting well into it which is really good.” Poppy, 12, and Olive, 14, love the social part of the competitions. “It’s a lot fairer and there’s a lot more female’s surfing now,” they said. Their father bought them both surfboards when they were three. Poppy came first in the under 14 category of the women’s champs. The training the youth do is vigorous, and it’s all on their own volition. They work with their coaches on creating goals they can work towards. Most try and surf every day if they can, showing boundless enthusiasm for the sport. “It could be wave counts, or carves, and we work on these throughout the sessions.” Jack said: “Taylors has the best waves in Christchurch with a nice cove beach.” Niwi Ututaonga, a volunteer coach with Point Surf Team, said: “These guys are really committed. They are always out practicing in the water and their results in the competitions show it.” Benji Lowen, 11, came first in the under 14 category of the Billabong Grom Series Competition held in Whangamata in February. Jack Tyro, 14, came second in the under 16 category. “We’ve got quite good surfers competing from Christchurch, but we’ve got competition too,” Jack said. Bodhi’s first competition was the Duke Festival of Surfing, held out in the windy waves of New Brighton beach over the second week of March. Prior to the competion, Bodhi said: “I’m excited and a little scared but I think I’ll give it a shot and it’s not really about competition, it’s about having fun.” The young surfers all offered a cool mature outlook when they explained what they get out of surfing. Ryder Townshed, 10, said: “I like being in the moment, all the adrenaline and if you win, you feel really stoked. If you don’t win, you just feel really stoked for the person who does win.” “I love the feeling of being in the water and having a little challenge. It’s fun with friends because it’s good company when you’re on the waves,” he continued. The best thing about surfing for them all is the freedom it offers. Said Kobe: “When you pop up, you don’t always know exactly what to do but you just do what feels right.” This idea was echoed by the others. “You’re so free. You feel like you can do whatever you want!” When the waves are big and the skies are foggy, they get nervous. Amelie is scared of sea creatures. Tessa is scared of seaweed. another is scared of stingrays. But nothing keeps them from loving the ocean and practicing their surfing as much as they can. They all say surfing offers them too many fun experiences to count. ‘I felt like I’m losing my mind’ • From page 1 “I will have been in isolation for almost six weeks by the time I’m due out. “I’m desperate to re-integrate back into society.” “I can’t even remember the last time I shook hands with somebody or gave out a highfive.” Malone, a primary school teacher, said he had spoken to a Ministry of Health nurse each day about his mental health situation. He said he had found himself drinking every day to offset the boredom and that his sleeping patterns had changed dramatically. “I feel like I’m losing my mind,” he said. “I don’t get up in the mornings anymore. The later I get up, the better, as it feels as though a third of my day is gone.” In spite of a traumatic few weeks, Malone had nothing but praise for the Grand Mercure Auckland hotel staff and was grateful to be back home in New Zealand having seen the chaos that Covid had caused overseas. “I’ve got to keep things in perspective,” he said. “I’m just looking forward to getting out there into a Covid-free society and being able to hug family and friends again.”
