MUMS AND staff from Kimihia
Parents’ College collected bags
of rubbish at Sumner Beach last
week.
The clean-up was organised to
recognise the work of Sumner
mum Becky Ward who coordinated
the Family Share event
earlier this year, said college staff
member Bianca Nielsen.
Ms Ward said she had
organised Family Share as
starting a family was “hard
enough, let alone if there is
hardship.”
Said Ms Nielson: “The things
donated have been very useful,
in particular the car seats,
warm winter clothes, blankets
and pushchairs. There were so
many donations that Becky had
organised for the Salvation Army
to collect the left over gear as we
couldn’t take it all.”
“We would like to thank
Sumner residents again for their
generosity.”
Ms Ward said she worked with
Ms Nielson on ways to help the
community.
“I wanted them to feel
empowered as young people
that they too can make a
difference and contribute to the
community,” she said.
Ms Nielson said the group
Language Week with a range
of activities.
The senior pupils planned,
organised and led a the initiatives
and activities last week.
The whole school would
start each morning with a
karakia (prayer) before kai
(food/eating). The activities
included taiaha, poi, rakau,
soap carving and kupu bingo.
Trip back in time for pupils
held off doing the clean-up to
coincide with Keep New Zealand
Beautiful Week.
“We collected one recycled
paper bag of rubbish each.
We started at the new
Scarborough Playground and
paddling pool then walked
along the Esplanade and beach to
Cave Rock. Mostly we picked up
bottle caps, cigarette buts, tissues
and wipes. There was the odd
bottle. I think it took us about an
hour.”
“We had a fun trip and some
of us dipped our toes in the
water and had a go on the new
playground before starting the
clean-up.”
Students
help bring
wetlands
back to life
FERRYMEAD’S Charlesworth
Reserve is looking good after
Linwood College students spent
a day planting and maintaining it
last week.
Forty two students participating
in the Stars peer mentoring
programme, rolling up their
sleeves to support the restoration
of wetlands in the area.
The group planted and mulched
more than 160 trees donated by
Trees for Canterbury after a demonstration
by city council park
ranger Andrew Crossland.
The volunteers were a mix of
year 9 students supported by year
12 and 13 mentors.
The programme is one of three
provided to Canterbury schools
by the Graeme Dingle Foundation,
and this is the first year it
has been available at Linwood
College.
Programme co-ordinator Sarah
Apiata said the planting day was
“a great success.”
“It was a great opportunity
for the peer mentors and year 9
students to work together and put
into practice some of the skills
they have learnt this year in the
Stars programme.”
