Controversial
bus stop
approved
A CONTROVERSIAL bus stop
outside Wakefield Ave businesses
will be installed in spite of pleas
from business owners.
The Linwood-Central-
Heathcote Community Board
approved to move the existing
southbound bus stop on the
bend of Marriner St and
Wakefield Ave to 1, 5, 7 Wakefield
Ave.
It was due to sit outside Sumner
Pharmacy as part of the Sumner
Village Centre Master Plan but
businesses owners contested it as
it would effect parking and create
more noise.
The city council generated a
report in response and suggested
another six options but listed
relocation 50m north as the
preferred option.
That will see the bus stop
moved in front of other
businesses – Beachside
Convenience, Stoked Surf Shop,
IndiMex Restaurant and Retreat
Apartments.
The bus stop installation will
see the removal of three on-street
car parks outside the stores.
Construction is proposed to
start in March and will take
about five months.
Fence draws criticism
• By Annabelle Dick
REDCLIFFS residents are
angered over ‘prison-type’
fencing that’s been installed
along Moa Bone Point Cave.
The city council installed a 2m
safety fences along the cliff side
of Main Rd to keep people out of
the dangerous rockfall area last
month.
Redcliffs Residents Association
says the spear posts make it
look aggressive and obtrusive.
“It’s unnecessary. This strikes
us as complete overkill and they
had the choice to do something
a little less aggressive,” secretary
Pat McIntosh said.
Fencing has been installed at
Moa Bone Point, and will also
be installed at Shag Rock Reserve
and Wakefield Ave, from
Nayland to Paisley Sts as part of
the Sumner Lyttelton Corridor
project.
Residents have fought the
fence installation since the
project’s designs were released
as they felt a 2m fence was too
imposing.
The residents association
instead fought for a 1.2m poolstyle
fence with hazard signs
instead of the proposed fence.
After public consultation
in June, the city council went
ahead with installing the 2m
pool-style design in spite of
submissions against it.
City council general manager
city services David Adamson
said the consultation was only
on the style of fencing, and the
decision on the spear top was
made after consultation.
But Dr McIntosh says the city
council didn’t indicate spears
would be a part of the design.
“The consultation process
looks like sham because they’ve
put up a different style fencing
from what they pictured in the
consultation,” Dr McIntosh said.
Mr Adamson said the aluminium
spear top pool-style fencing
was chosen as the rod top poolstyle
fencing wasn’t available
from a local manufacturer.
“Local manufacture is important
as we may need to replace
panels in the future due to damage
and we needed to be able to
quickly source matching panels
to ensure the area remains safe
with people not able to easily
access the hazardous areas,” he
said.
He added it wouldn’t be feasible
to remove it due to the cost.
The residents association has
written to the Linwood-Central-
CORDONED
fence is being
installed along
the Sumner
Lyttelton
Corridor to keep
people out of
the rockfall
area. It has
been called
an eyesore by
residents.
