Work starts
to prevent
flooding in
Little River
• By Louis Day
WORK TO reduce the risk of
flooding in Little River is now
under way.
Banks Peninsula Community
Board member Tori Peden said
some money had been put aside
to combat the risk of flooding in
the area.
“There have been people on
the ground inspecting a few of
the old drains to figure out what
the game plan is going forward.”
The move to address the
threat of flooding was prompted
by a submission on the Long
Term Plan from the Little River
Wairewa Community Trust.
Trust chairman Robert Burch
said reducing the risk of flooding
would make Little River a
“happier and healthier place to
live.”
“We will be able to proceed
with other items of infrastructure
that includes a recreation
area behind the river being
regenerated, that includes things
like walkways from Western
Valley Rd to the school to make
access easier, it will also go a
long way in ensuring State Highway
75 remains open.”
The Gaiety hall maintenance under way
MAINTENANCE on the
139-year-old Italianate theatre,
known as the “ornament” of
Akaroa is now under way.
The Gaiety was damaged in
the February 22, 2011,
earthquake and enjoyed a grand
reopening in April 2016 after
being repaired and strengthened,
but further work is now
required.
Work began on Monday and
city council Community Facilities
Specialist Paul McKeefry
expected it to be completed by
mid-February.
CONCERNS OVER the state
of Jeannie’s Cottage are growing
as it continues to be neglected
by the city council.
Akaroa Civic Trust member
Victoria Andrews said the
cottage had deteriorated to an
almost irreparable state over the
winter.
“The council has let Jeannie’s
Cottage deteriorate to the
point where it is demolition by
neglect.”
extra attention when it comes to
routine maintenance.”
The roof to the main hall will
be replaced and borer treatment
will be applied throughout the
building.
A number of boards throughout
the building including the
weatherboards on the south
external wall, the deck boards
and some of the boards on the
floor of the main hall will also be
replaced.
The Gaiety will be open for
all existing bookings, however,
it will be closed while internal
work is being carried out during
the day.
Cottage neglect concerns trust
The cottage at 40 Rue Jolie
was built in the late 1870s.
Deputy mayor and Banks
Peninsula councillor Andrew
Turner said he shared the concerns
of the trust.
“I am worried about the decay
to the building and also the image
it presents in Akaroa being
a key site.”
City council took expressions
of interest in regard to the
cottage and is currently undertaking
a request for proposal
process.
Cr Turner, however, was unhappy
with the amount of time
this was taking.
“I am doing everything I
possibly can to ensure we get
on with what needs to be done,
both in terms of repairs to the
cottage and also to get that
request for proposal process out
of the way so we can determine
future use as soon as possible.”
The process was expected
to be finished before Christmas,
however, Cr Turner has
requested for the cottage to be
prioritised so the process can be
finished even sooner.
