28

Once you have mastered the
subject pronouns in Spanish you
are ready to begin conjugating
verbs.
29

How do you conjugate a verb?
 Start with the verb in its infinitive form.
 The infinitive form in English always begins

with ‘to’ followed by the action.
For example:
To sing
To eat
To write
Notice that none of these verbs has a su
To talk
perform the action.
To drink
To share
30

See if you can identify verb conjugation in
English.
Pedro sings.
To sing

You eat.
To eat

Marta and Pedro write.
To write

In the present tense in English the verb only
changes in the 3rd person singular by adding
‘s’.
Verbs are conjugated when a subject carries
out the action of the verb.

Pedro sings.
An ‘s’ was added to ‘sing’ to make it fit the subject.
You eat.
In this statement the ‘to’ of the infinitive was simply
removed to conjugate the verb for ‘you’.
In Spanish, verb conjugation is much more obvious.
Let’s take a look.

31
32

Infinitive verbs in Spanish
•All infinitive verbs in Spanish end in –ar, -er, or –ir.
•The –ar,-er, and –ir are the equivalent of the ‘to’ in
