- 3. What was Sinclair’s purpose for writing The Jungle? Written in 1906 Sinclair wrote the novel to expose horrendous working conditions in Chicago’s meat-packing industry. He hoped that novel would inspire readers to take action to improve the lives of the workers.
- 4. How did the public respond? Public was more horrified by the descriptions of how meat was being processed in factories. Sales of meat plummeted. European companies refused to import meat from the U.S.
- 5. How did the government respond? President Theodore Roosevelt called for an investigation. He appointed two men to independently document the conditions in meat-packing plants. Both reported that Sinclair’s depiction was accurate.
- 6. Because of The Jungle . . . Congress passed the Pure Food and Drug Act and the Meat Inspection Act in 1906. An agency of the U.S. Department of Commerce—later named the Food and Drug Administration (FDA)—now for the first time had power to regulate the production of foods sold nationwide.
