Hercules was ordered to perform twelve labors as penance for killing his children during a fit of madness caused by Hera. The labors included killing the Nemean lion, slaying the Hydra of Lerna, capturing the Erymanthian boar, and cleaning the Augean stables in a single day. The final three labors were obtaining the belt of Hippolyta, stealing the cattle of Geryon, and capturing Cerberus from the underworld.

- 2. The story of Hercules. Zeus, after leaving Alcmene pregnant, mother of Heracles, proclaimed that the next child born in the house of Perseus would become king.
- 3. In a fit of madness caused by Hera, Heracles killed his own children. When he regained sanity and realized what he had done was isolated from the world, went to live alone to the wilderness. It was found by his brother. In penance for this action, the Delphic Sibyl told him he had to carry out a series of twelve labors.
