cinematography is poetry in motion.
Cinema shots
Making your movie divides up into three main stages.
• Pre-production is the planning stage, where you work out your movie in
detail. What you’re going to film, how you’re going to film it, and what
you’re going to need. Planning might seem boring if you just want to start
shooting, but it’ll save time and make for a much better movie. There are
several ways to plan a film. You can develop ideas using a mindmap, write
a detailed script, then draw storyboards to plan your shots.
• Production is where you shoot your movie and gather other stuff you
might need (like sound, still images, archive material and so on.) This stage
will be much easier if you’ve planned properly in advance.
• Post-production is where you choose what you’re going to include in your
movie, edit it, add sounds and effects, and get it ready to share. You need
to be really organised about this process, which is usually different
depending on the kind of movie you’re making. Don’t just import
everything into your editing program and try to make sense of it: you
should have a plan before you start editing.
The Types of Shots and What They Mean
Cinematography Techniques: The Different Types of Shots in Film
The different types of camera shots
think about how familiar
your audience should
feel to your subject.
This is where shot size
comes in.
• How you choose to frame your subject will
have a specific impact. How close or far your
subject is to your camera -- your shot size --
will underscore how the audience should feel
about it (or them).
Your subject will appear smallest in a long
shot (or wide shot). They will be larger in a
medium shot and largest in a close-up shot.
It all starts with an establishing shot...
• An establishing shot is a shot at the head of a scene that clearly shows us the
location of the action. This shot often follows an aerial shot and is used to show
where everything will happen
Extreme Long Shot (ELS)
• An extreme long shot (or extreme wide shot) make your subject appear small
against their location.
• You can use an extreme long shot to make your subject feel distant or unfamiliar. It
can also make your subject feel overwhelmed by its location.
• Use extreme long shot when you need to emphasize the location.
Stanley Kubrick’s The Shining
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=97&v=LjLip2FZLuA
Long Shot (LS)
• The long shot is a bit closer.
• If your subject is a person then his or her whole body will be in view -- but not
filling the shot.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=37&v=4Hf_XkgE1d0
Christopher Nolan Interstellar
Full Shot (FS)
• your subject fill the frame
• the camera is usually close enough to capture your subject’s basic appearance.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=74&v=85cAFs65o1U
Paul Thomas Anderson’s The Master.
Medium Long Shot (MLS)
• A medium long shot frames
your subject from roughly the
knees up.
Medium Shot (MS)
• The medium shot
frames from roughly
the waist up.
• it emphasizes more of
your subject and keeps
their surroundings
visible.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=14&v=HQVEteeLC3c
David Fincher Fight Club
Medium Close Up (MCU)
• The medium close-up frames your subject from roughly the chest up.
• it typically favors the face, but still keeps the subject somewhat distant.
Joel Coen, Ethan Coen
The Big Lebowski
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=PztgWdMEJdg
Close Up (CU)
• The close-up is where you fill your frame with a part of your subject. If your
subject is a person, it is often their face.
• You know it’s time for a close-up when you want to reveal a subject’s emotions
and reactions.
• Close-ups are great camera shots for capturing monologues

Extreme Close Up
(ECU)
• The extreme
close-up shot
is traditionally
used in film to
allow the
viewer to enter
the character’s
intimate space
• is used also to
reveal very
small details in
the scene

Manipulating focus is another way of communicating with your
camera shots
A deep focus shot shows most of the gang in 12 Angry Men
Low Angle Shot
This shot frames your subject from a low camera height. These dramatic camera shots
most often emphasize power dynamics between characters.
High Angle Shot
In a high angle shot, your camera points down
at your subject.
Orson Welles Citizen Kane
Dutch Angle
In the dutch (or “canted”) angle, the camera is slanted to one
side. With the horizon lines tilted in this way, you can create a
sense of disorientation.
Danny Boyle Slumdog
Millionaire
Knee Level Shot
This is when your camera height is about as low as your subject’s
knees. They can emphasize a character’s superiority if paired with a
low angle.
Ground Level Shot
This is when your camera’s height is on ground level with your subject. Needless to say, this shot
captures what’s going on the ground your subject stands on
how movement can change the meaning of your camera shots
https://www.youtube.com/watch?time_continue=88&v=nR10sSdh8xU
When there’s no movement (i.e. locked
camera aim) it’s called a static shot.

Tilt
Tilting is when you move your camera up and
down on a vertical axis.

Tracking
A tracking shot moves with your subject. Sometimes it follows behind or
beside them on a dolly or a Steadicam
Martin Scorsese
Goodfellas
Arc Shot
These camera shots find the camera circling a subject to reveal it
from different angles.

Drone Shot
These camera shots attach to a drone to fly over or
alongside your subject. They're often used for aerial
shots
