How can you best engage local government officials in the educational process?

Align! Determine how to align with the goals of the local government. Invite local government officials to collaborate once a common ground has been established. Use methods to highlight the processes that require the support of officials, invite them to participate, and visit the schools/institutions. Annual days, sports days, and other events are excellent opportunities to invite them to experience the development while also emphasizing the requirements and value of their participation and support. Establish rapport. To stay in touch with the process, they must engage in a sustained exercise that requires continuous effort. Once the communication channels are established, use the space to present your ideas and emphasize the need.

This is a vital step in obtaining partnership with people in positions of power. We must clearly state our needs and how they can assist us. Far too often we assume that they will know what they can do, or we are just wanting of any support. However, not being clear with our asks, politicians may deter to more common methods of support. In my experience, selecting a need that is aligned to their priorities also helps, as it is easy to present a solution that is a win-win for all. I think often about the larger end-goal and how your first ask can set the stage for a lasting partnership. In this sense, we should have one ask at a time, that can bring change over time, instead of setting a lofty goal that feels "hard" for them to do.

Research is important. Figure out to whom you should speak for a particular issue. Don’t be surprised at how murky the atmosphere is for your search as it seems there is no straight path in education politics. You’ll find out that for most non-trivial education issues the power rests at the state level. It is effective though to have a local, sympathetic alley when you approach the state.

Late president Abraham Lincoln had said that democracy is of the people , by the people & for the people - so that stands true for government - thus the government can be informed about the policy needed , the pragmatic benefit & how it would help in nation building . So one who plans to take benefit , must present one’s case accordingly & along with necessary details also elaborate on what Modus operandi would be really beneficial.Of course government would have certain limitations & proposition that not only identifies the need but also the most economical method would certainly be appreciated & applied as the necessary action.The value balance must be in favour of huge benefit at minimum cost & not vice versa . I am sure of success .

Seeing is believing. Do not lose any opportunity to showcase the process and impact. For instance, if you want support for a nutrition program for children, hold a health festival of sorts, showcase live outcomes of healthy diet through exercise regimes followed by children or even races and track events won by them. The best ways to engage local government officials in educational processes is to build a positive relationship and rapport with them, involve them and listen, invite them to events, keep them abreast of what you are doing, ask for and value their feedback, be open and honest, the process is ongoing stakeholder involvement and engagement.

At the time I approached my state regarding education policy, I found that many holding state education positions had not been in a classroom since their student day. Also at that time, there was only one person at the state level with any real classroom experience (more than 3-5 years). Most were career administrators.

Inviting the experienced & visionary to contribute . Government today unfortunately has huge running challenge due to the huge number and thus the in action officials hardly get to breathe any fresh air . The visionaries need to apply thought to bless the world , particularly the next generation which have a huge challenge pending to be faced & handled .
