Urbanerds - having a drink and talking about urbanism/cities

2025-07-17 18:00 (Pacific/Auckland) → 2025-07-17 20:00 (Pacific/Auckland)

Back by popular demand, and with a slightly bigger venue! :sparkles::sunset:

Join us for a drink and cool conversations about cities. Whether you’re designing bike lanes, planning public transport, or just passionate about urban spaces or urban development, this is a great opportunity to connect.

We’ve got some interesting people joining us including Skye Duncan, global urban designer but based in Ōtepoti Dunedin.

Let me know if you’re planning to join us for a drink so we have an idea how many people will show up. Feel free to tag or share this post with anyone who might be interested in joining.

SH1/SH88 Dunedin Safety Improvements - feedback sought General https://www.nzta.govt.nz/projects/sh1-sh88-dunedin-safety-improvements/

Snapshot of the key proposed changes

  • New Barnes Dance crossing (where all pedestrians cross the road at once) at the SH88 St Andrew Street/SH1 Cumberland Street intersection to help people reach the hospital public entrances safely.

  • Remove the westbound right turn from SH88 St Andrew Street onto SH1 Cumberland Street to make space and time for the increased number of pedestrians, including people with mobility needs, to cross the road.

  • Two new signalised pedestrian crossings on SH1 outside the Woolworths and the Centre City New World supermarkets.

  • Changes to St Andrew Street and other nearby streets to help people driving, walking and cycling, and emergency vehicles, move safely and smoothly around the hospital and surrounding area.

  • Left in and left out only turns are proposed to increase safety at the St Andrew/Leith Street and Frederick/Leith Street intersections.

  • Move SH88 from St Andrew to Frederick Street.

  • Timing - we aim to deliver this work over the next 2–5 years, depending on funding and consents.

The proposed plans for the SH1/SH88 area build on our earlier work in 2023, when the decision was made to keep the existing Dunedin SH1 one-way system. Find out more here:

Google Maps Bike Paths - How Dunedin compares globally General I recently completed a 3 week bike tour around Portugal with my daughter. Google maps and other GPS apps were extremely important to our daily navigation. Visiting foreign cities like Lisbon or familiar one’s like Calgary or Victoria in Canada and you come to realise that great physical infrastructure is only great if you can find it. Using google maps to get directions quickly helps me decide if i should bike, drive, uber, walk ot take transit. If we look at dunedin on google maps we can see that the DCC still has a ways to get to get our bike paths mapped correclty into google using their submission tool
https://contentpartners.maps.google.com/welcome?hl=en
We also as a community can take a role in submitting corrections to pathways but the primary responsibility rests with the DCC. It is interesting looking on google maps (bike path view) to see how many green lines (bike paths) different but geographically simialr cities have. We can see hilly cities like Dunedin still have a long way to go to get infrastructure caught up with e-bikes (which make all cities flat). Lets continue to lobby DCC to improve their data set uploads to Google so everyone can find and use the infrastructure we have.

Meeting about GLOW (professional development support for community and climate leaders) General Kia ora,

Apologies for the short notice. My name is Patrick Rooney, and I’m part of the national organising group for GLOW. I’ll be in Dunedin from the morning of Friday May 16th until Sunday evening, and was hoping you might have a brief window to meet.

GLOW is an independent, non-partisan candidate incubator. We’re on a mission to encourage a new cohort of local leaders by providing professional development support for diverse, talented community and climate leaders to stand for, and thrive in, this year’s local government elections. Our aim is to be a launchpad for these voices, enabling them to drive climate and community-led action.

Our 12-week incubator program covers how local government works, campaigning tips, and fosters a vital support network for new candidates.

I would greatly appreciate the opportunity to tell you more about our initiative and discuss how your organisation might encourage greater diversity of people and ideas in the upcoming elections.

Would you have any availability for a brief chat, perhaps over a coffee?

Looking forward to the possibility.

Ngā mihi,

Patrick Rooney

The Big Bike Film Night - 1st screening late Sunday afternoon

2025-05-18 16:00 (Pacific/Auckland) → 2025-05-18 18:30 (Pacific/Auckland)

A very good morning to all SPOKES Dunedin members,

Brett from the Big Bike Film Night here; hey, I wanted to contact you about our upcoming film festival screenings at the Rialto Cinema Dunedin with our 2025 collection of the world’s best short cycling movies.

The collection of bike films is geared to inspire, with a breathtaking array of short cycling films that celebrate the fun, adventure, and inspiration that cycling enables; showcasing 2.5 hours of moving bike films that have everything a cycle-centric audience could want.

ATTENDEE COMMENTS:

  • "If you haven’t experienced the cinematic excellence of The Big Bike Film Night - then YOU MUST!!!

  • “Anyone into bikes will love these events… they are always brilliant – 11/10!!”

  • “Much more than mountain biking films. This was a beautifully curated collection of films each with its own story and while riding bikes was central to most the films were about so much more and would appeal to a much broader group than just keen riders.”

  • “This was my first time at a Big Bike Film Night, I’m hooked!”

I hope you can share the details of this event with your community, and I’m sure, like last year, local bike enthusiasts will enjoy this year’s biketastic ‘melting pot’ of cycling inspiration.

If you have time, please watch the trailer link below, to get an understanding of some of the enticing films in this year’s line-up.

The Big Bike Film Night 2025 Promo Trailer

I appreciate the time you have taken to help me with this, and I look forward to hearing from you if there is anything else I can do to help.

Pedal on!!!

B

WYSIWYG composer implemented in spokes.nz General I’m delighted to announce that we have an upgrade - you can now type your posts directly instead of in Markdown.

This is called WYSIWYG, or What You See Is What You Get. It is also what most people are used to in most social media and word processing software.

The markdown is still there - you can reveal it with the little button at the left end of the bar across the composer (this is helpful if you need to do something a bit more fancy):

Please have a go with it and let us know what you think. Maybe as a reply to this post?

Urbanerds

2025-04-16 19:00 (Pacific/Auckland) → 2025-04-16 21:00 (Pacific/Auckland)

I’m setting up an urbanerds - basically a catchup at a bar to talk urbanism. Next Wednesday at 7pm at WOOF.

The reason; Stu is coming to town next week. Dr. Stuart Donovan is a Senior Fellow at Motu Economic and Public Policy Research and has two decades of experience working in Australia and New Zealand in spatial, urban, and transport economics; multi-modal transport planning; and land use policy.

And is keen to meet the urbanist community here in Dunedin. I hope you can join me. Please let me know if you are keen, so we have an idea how many people will show up.

And if you know of any people that are keen to join, please forward this message.
Would be great to see some people from Spokes Dunedin there.

Emergency location indicators installed along the Te Ara Moana General This sounds like a very good thing to have:

I do wonder if they could have been a little more subtle. For instance, a simple (and reasonably discreet) km marker would do that job as well as give people other useful info while cycling or running.

Coffee Outside Weekend Edition Events The next incarnation of Coffee Outside.
Come join other cycling enthusiasts for a hot drink and a chat amongst yourselves. Doesn’t have to be coffee. But as always DIY, BYO, or try your luck. Coming into autumn I might have some warming masala chai to spare.
No need to be “on time” or stay all the time.

There’s no alternate venue or postponement day for bad weather. Cancellation will be a personal call, there will be other coffee dates in the calendar later on. I’ll have an umbrella or two, but probably won’t stay the whole time if it’s miserable. Especially if it looks like the rest of you are staying sensibly at home

Revamp / simplification of the spokes.nz site General I’ve spent a bit of time today streamlining our spokes.nz website to make it a better fit for our purposes, and simpler. In brief:

  1. Added Events so that all our events can be in one nicely ordered place.
  2. Merged and simplified the other Categories
  3. Turned off the Chat functionality as they made things quite a bit more complex (we retain Messages which can do the same job)

I haven’t changed the homepage / landing experience yet. @frstep - I know that you’ve got some ideas as to how that can be improved.

Also, @jon.dean - it would be great if we could close down spokesdunedin.wordpress.com somehow. It remains an unhelpful ghost lurking in the background.

Vogel Street workshops Projects The DCC are looking at Vogel Street improvements. I have been invited to a workshop but since it falls in the school holidays, I might not be able to attend. Anyone else keen? The info I have:

As you may know, we have been talking about improving Vogel Street to be a low speed/low volume shared street that can function as a primary cycling route, connecting the City Centre to the South.

The project has been identified through the draft Otepoti Dunedin Pathways project as a high priority and we are currently in the process of engaging ViaStrada to help us advance the planning.

The desired outputs are concept options for Vogel St and a network plan that outlines how the southern part of the central city will function as a whole, considering the SH1 improvements project and Princes St projects. This will then feed into current projects and we will aim for funding through the DCC 9 Year Plan (2025-34).

It would be great to have you involved in the project early on. To enable this, we would like to invite you to two workshops:

  1. Clean sheet information gathering workshop (in person)
  • Monday 14 April from 2pm
  • Tuesday 15 April from 11am
  • Thursday 17 April from 1pm
  1. Draft options workshop (online workshop, 4 weeks after the first workshop)

Please submit your opinion on Draft 10 year Otago Regional Council public transport plan General The Otago Regional Council just opened submissions from the public their Draft Otago Regional Public Transport Plan Summary 2025–2035. Feedback closes 2 May 2025.

I will be commenting on bikes on busses as well as the all important lack of any improvement in the Dunedin City to Dunedin Airport public transport link. Any other city in NZ - Auckland, Wellington, Chch., Queenstown - its a piece of cake to get to/from airport by bus and I have done so many times. Why does it take 2 hours to get a shuttle from Dunedin Airport to home and cost about $30. Dunedin is really hurting itself by not having better public transport to/from the airport. Not to mention a bike path. Victoria BC has a lovely bike path, and bike lockers and even bike tools and pumps etc so you can get to and from the airport with your bike and take your bike on your bike vacation to somewhere warm. Dunedin has no safe biking route thru the taieri (from the Wingatui Tunnel) to the Airport. Wellington has the nice Rongatai bike tunnel to the airport (actually under the runway) But I digress the bike to airport is another topic…
